Got a pics for all who have been so kind to put up w/me!

Wow - it's been a year and I'm still making changes. Here are some pics of things that are a bit different now - I STILL don't have treatments for the new room - If I do anything, I'm thinking of going w/roman shades to match the ones in the other room. Thanks all for your kind words!

The blue couch in now in the fininshed basement, I wanted to bring red in to balance the bits of red I have going on in the other room:

Lastly- we ended up doing a stone patio at the end of the deck - we love it!

Finally replaced the falling apart flagstone walk way w/brick - DH's friend did it - we love it too-

I think we're up to date now! Hope I'm not bothering anyone by posting the pics! THanks!

Wow, your house is absolutely beautiful, inside and out. You did a terrific job. I love your shades. Did you get them made locally or on-line? Great, great job. Do you think you'll be free to travel South next October to help me decorate my new house? Are you a decorator by trade?

Annual hard pruning of crape myrtles has been called crape murder. bboy, I hate pollarding. I bought a house with pollarded silver maples which are all rotting; trimming isn't enough to solve the problem, so I'm looking at removal and replacement. However, the crape myrtles I'm familiar with all seem to bloom much more profusely when they've been pollarded. so my impression is that crape myrtles are more tolerant of severe pruning than other types of trees. [They're not my crape myrtles -- just some I see around town and where my parents live.]

dsieber: Yes, we do tomatoes. We are lucky in that a good portion of our property faces south (ranging from SE to SW depending on which part) and that we are thoroughly in the 285 corridor valley (right near a massive cliff face that gives us extra reflected light and heat). That lets us be just a bit toastier than most of the area. I've had the best luck with the smaller tomato varieties. Tiny Tim cherry tomatoes and Extreme Bush tomatoes give me the best yields of what I've tried so far. I've also gotten some Rose and Moskvich tomatoes as well, although the season ended last year before they got truly productive. I'll probably give in this year and use some miracle-gro or other chemical fertilizer to boost the growth speed on my tomatoes, peppers, and cucurbits(squash, melons, and such). I haven't used chemical fertilizers on my tomatoes in the past. I'm hoping that if I do I'll be able to get a full harvest on them. I normally pre-sprout some inside as starts and plant them out the first time the weather forecast is showing a week with 40 as the lowest low. I also pre-sprout some seeds to direct sow as well since sometimes if I lose the starts, the ones started outside will still come through for me. I'm still trying different varieties to see if any other tomatoes will do better than the ones I listed previously. This year I've got three new varieties to try (Juliet, Eva Purple ball, and Debarao). Essentially if the seed site I use has any tomatoes on sale and they are relatively short span to maturity I'll pick them up to try. So it is still a work in progress. Thralen

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I have so enjoyed looking at everyone's ideas and homes that I was inspired to post my own. I have to say it was such fun taking the pictures and learning about photobucket. I do enjoy the collecting of Christmas stuff but like most of you here on the boards I am budget minded too. When I get some on these gorgeous items on sale after the holidays it makes it that much sweeter. To answer some of your questions: Kathleen li - I love the ironing board Santa in the hall display too. It isn't really an ironing board but a piece of plywood with fabric and paint done to look like Santa. I bought it years ago at a craft fair here in Birmingham, AL for less than $20. The santa portrait is new this year from Kirkland's Home. The have one every year and it is only $59. I got it last week at 25% off. Calicocat1967 - I like the Santa plates. I was fortunate enough to most of them from Fitz and Floyd last year on Christmas day. They put everything on sale and I get their emails telling when. I picked them up for less than $10 each. The covered dish in the kitchen corner cabinet came from Tuesday Morning after Christmas last year. It is a Christopher Radko but I only paid $15 for it on sale. luvstocraft - Thanks for thinking I "belong". I kind of felt like I did and it's nice to point out to hubby "There are others like me. I'm not the only one always picking up dishes or decorations everywhere I go" One of the things I have enjoyed about the board is the comradery. Every when I didn't post I felt apart of the community. I am glad that I came out of lurkdom. I got the angles in the pictures for 25 cents a print years ago and had them framed for less than $10 each. I stole the hanging on a ribbon and dowel idea from a magazine. Very eye catching and costs very little too. phyl345 - I'm glad you enjoyed it. sameboat - Thanks for looking and commenting. melvalena- I hope I didn't create new work for you for next year. I am enjoying changing up things a bit from year to year, so I love the ideas you guys come up with. Hope you have a wonderful holiday with your grandkids. bonniee- Thank you. I enjoyed your post about decorations too. mary ruth - Thanks, I love the Fitz and Floyd too. I got the large santas on top of the refridgerator last year on Christmas day. They are normally $350 each but on their clearance/outlet on their website they were only $89. I know that is still expensive, but I couldn't pass up the chance for something so large and beautiful for that price. I ordered my mom and her sister one for this year's Christmas present. I am so excited to give them to them. They are the chief decorators in the family so I came by it honestly. slinkey - What a nice welcome. Thanks for you praise and I feel like I will be a regular now that I've broken the ice. I do love my home. It is older and I actually came to these boards because we are considering building a new home on a lot we bought so I was researching building and come across this board on a search. But it didn't take me long to go from the Building a House forum to Decorating to Christmas/Holidays. purplemoon - I have loved all of your decorations and posts for the year. I thank you for your comments. The pair of large leaping reindeer are my "pride and joy". This is the first year I have displayed them, getting them last Christmas Day online. They came from Frontgate, which is not a store that I can normally afford. But after Christmas they put all their stuff on sale and mark it down a little more each week. On their website is a section called Outlet. I did not know of it and wanted a large reindeer for my fireplace hearth, so I searched and got a hit on them. The are regularly $199 each and but were on clearance for $59 each. Again a little more than I normally pay for a Christmas decoration, but a great deal on a heavy well made piece. I am pleased with the display. I would be honored to have some of my stuff in the Inspiration Album. Thanks for asking. Does that mean I have "arrived"? Ha-Ha. It is always so wonderful to see pictures of your home - so beautiful! You should be very proud. I love the red couch in there - looks great and flows with everthing else you have going on.

Do you mind telling me where you got the twist floor lamp in the "red" room? I am looking for something exactly like that for my great room. Thanks and enjoy your wonderful home with your family!

Could you tell us what colors you painted in each of the rooms?
Also, I am looking for a sofa table like the one behind your sofa. I would like to put one in my MBR on the far wall with a picture above it and the two lamps (like you have in the dining room). Where did you get yours?

Thanks so much for posting those, Susan! You have a gorgeous home, and I love how you've decorated it. (Even the trees are gorgeous, LOL) The patio is fantastic, too!

Hey all -
Thanks so much - as is everyone's home (or at least in my family) it's still a work in progress! A few answers, the twist lamp is from Ethan Allen. The table behind the sofa is by French Heritage. I got it on major clearance when Mastercraft Interiors (a place here in Maryland) went out of biz. You can go to the French Heritage website, they still have it, but I'm not sure where you could get it/oreder it in your area. The paint color is Pittsfield Buff (BR). THe LR & DR paint is SW LR is Restrained Gold and DR is Mannered Gold (I think!) I wanted the color to be light in the hallway and get deeper as you went into the LR then DR. The rman shades were made by Calico Corners - they're hung on small L brackets. I think I'll do the same romans in the room w/the red couch to further tie the rooms together. And no....not a professional at all - just a frustrated decorating mom!

Susan, take a deep bow! Your decorating flair is superb! Those are my colors and I'm so inspired by what you've done. It's just yummy. I'm so glad you posted the photos. Photos are my favorite part of this whole forum and I can't get enough of them.

Your windows are just gorgeous and are making me really miss the windows in my last house. I had grids put in them, which I loved. The ones here are very wide, which makes them harder to curtain and no grids, and I don't know what to do with them. I keep reminding myself how lucky I am to have a decent home when so many in the world have nothing, and I'm such a brat to be pouty about something like that.

You must be SO pleased! Where do you get your skills?

Susan, it was really fun to see the finished projects you've been working on. What a gorgeous home you've created...I love it all too! Great, great job with it all. The outside is just wonderful too. Now, sit back & enjoy it all, it looks like a warm, inviting place to live.

Not sure with my monitor but is Pittsfield Buff a warm golden color? I need a neutral color to paint the rest of the house and that color will be side by side in some spots with mustard seed. Your back rooms looks golden so it might work in mine.

Thanks for the info on the table. I live in No VA and I did go over to the mastercraft place to look but I wasn't looking for a table at that time. It's been a recent decision to put a table in my MBR.

Once again I loved looking at your house. I agree with Oceanna - my favorite part of this website is looking at the pictures. Of course I love the advice too but it is always nicer to "see" what people are talking about.

I agree with how the rooms flow! You've done an amazing amount of decorating and the results are great. Congratulations! I love the color schemes, the furniture and the accessories. The window treatments really make me wish we had a Calico Corners nearby (closest is 3 1/2 hours away).

You must be proud and it shows, not an easy task to have all of it come together at any given moment in time.

Do I see some Quimper adorning the walls??

Also, love the mustard colored lamp - seen in ?front window on a console type table (red couch in the room) 2 others burgundy colored in the other room - are they all the same? where did you find them

Susan, I nearly jumped when I saw you had new photos, I love it all! We're about to have our master bedroom done in Pitt. Buff and was thinking of red for the bedding so that helped a lot. And I so plan on tracking down that coffee table, I'm still lusting after it! : )

I just wanted to make sure I have your colors down right. In this picture, is Pittsfield Buff on the wall where the windows are and the wall to the right? The wall to the right looks lighter and I didn't know if it was just the way the light was shining or if I misunderstood the colors.

Oooh Susan. I just came across your resurrected thread the other day and wondered when you said you repainted a few rooms.

This looks incredible! The RED couch is perfect in the space. Love everything about your home. It is beautiful, and I imagine it's difficult to get your housework done when you could just sit there and enjoy the views both in/out your windows. :o)

Great job. It's beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing. My favorite posts are the ones with photos so I can "see" what posters are talking about. So glad you shared!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Thanks for your kind words - here are some answers to your quetions.

The counter stools - I'm pretty sure that I got them at the website below - I had them stained walnut. Looks like the website is down for maintenance right now, but try back later. Her's a close-up of the stools -

THe mmirror is from Bombay Company - but I've seen somthing similar in Ballard.

Topiaries came from a local Florist Called Johnsons (got them during an after Christmas sale).

Yup, I have some quimpoer from Pierre Deux on the walls. The lamps came from different places - the red ones from a store called Kellogg Collection and the mustard ones from a place called Annapolis Lighting. As it turns out they both have pomegranates on the sides on the lamps. Didn't plan it that way - I just liked the scale. They look VERY similar. I wanted to have kind of have a ying yang thing going on with the red and mustard color. One side - golden couch w/red lamps, other side - red couch golden lamps.

Yes we'll be decorating the tree will go (I think) in the room with the red couch - the side chair w/wood arms will go to the office for the holiday season! Thanks all!

Thanks for all the eye candy, Susan! Your home just keeps getting better and better. I love it all. I think the gold works better in your dining room than the previous green you had, and I love the red sofa! If there was a "drool" smiley on this forum, I'd be using it now!

Could you tell me where you bought the red and gold animal print throw pillows, or did you have them made?

Hey there - the larger pillows on the couch are a fabric called Malabar by Cowtan & Tout, the smaller pillows on the lether chair and arm chair are made of a fabric called Zambezi by Brunschwig & Fils. I bought them all on ebay. The fabric is too much $$ to buy retail. I also stalk ebay for the fabric too to make into other pillows or cover an ottoman. Hope this helps!

Susan, I love what you've done with your rooms, especially the room with the two chairs opposite the green sofa and the room with the fireplace. The right reds and golds are always so soothing and inviting. I do not say "love" lightly; your decorating really speaks to my heart.

I sometimes get frustrated with shopping and all the decisions to be made (we're a few months in to decorating our "new to us" older home, and a partial remodel). I'm hoping for some inspiration and hope, lol. Can I ask how you're shopping and decision making experiences were? Did it take a lot of time? Did you change your mind a lot? Did you purchase items that you later regretted or did you find a way to make them work? (I liked the blue couch, but the red does one does tie everything together very well) Any advice or tips you'd like to share?

I think the most beautiful aspects of your rooms is that they aren't over decorated. They're simple yet complete, classy, refined and tasteful while also being cozy and casual. Good job!

Susan, I REALLY love what you've done with everything!! It could not have been pulled together any better IMO. However long it took to get all the elements in place was worth it. Just a beautiful job inside and out. Rest now, sit back and enjoy it !!
