I can't tell by your picture whether the fireplace wall is already painted with a neutral color. My opinion would be to paint the woodwork around the windows and bookcases the same.

It is an ivory color and to me, blends in and washes out the fireplace.

Such a beautiful room. Here are some browns from the paint color, and neutrals from the stone. Depending on your furnishings, a green is beautiful for green and gold; or a dusty, grayed teal kind of a color. Including lights and darks, as well as different tints on the ceiling. The door/trim is in white in all of these. Depending on the color you choose and the rest of the area, you could probably do a color on the trim also, though.

Thanks squirrelheaven! I'm leaning more towards the brown. The green is pretty but I'm not much of a green person. What do you think the RH Flax would look like? Do you think it will look funny to paint the wall and the trim a different color? I not sure how the window trim would look painted a darker color or if I'd even like it but then again it might look funny to paint it and the fireplace wall a different color. What do you think.

Just wanted to say your room is very pretty.

We had alot of cedar in our other house ( this one also until we renovated). I would suggest that you look at the color of new cedar before it gets weathered, and use a solid stain if possible to get back to the original color of cedar. I would keep the window trim the same as the cedar on each side of the FP. Looking at your pics, you have alot of wood in the room and this may be why they painted it to begin with. If left untreated, cedar fades and gets dry. You have a really pretty room.
Squirrel - I agree - these thumbnails are a drag - it takes me awhile to enlarge them and I am on cable, but I understand why you have to use them.

Thanks for all of the comments! I don't like the look of stained cedar so I'm really not open to staining it. I saw pictures of it when it was stained and it was awful! Really dark and dated so that is why they painted it! Thanks for all of the suggestions.....keep em coming!

Well, the dial-ups can't load the thread and one said a U-Tube song had jammed their machine on load. I really don't like the thumbnails and when I used them before, I don't think many bothered to look. A lot of people don't bother to click on things. So, either way, we lose! Therefore, unless the poster is on dial-up, pics seem to work better --thumbnails are a drag so I'll just post pics again ;)

Gypsy, I'll have to look up the RH Flax online and pull in a swatch, although it won't be accurate, just brown. From what I can see, I think it looks nice to treat the fp wall cedar as a painted wall and the trim around the door as a light trim. If you were doing the walls light, you could keep all the cedar the same color, but doing walls and cedar in brown doesn't sound so appealing, imo.

I agree squirrelheaven...I don't want it to all be brown. I'm wanting to do the walls in RH Cappuccino or 50% Cappuccino. Do you think that would be too many colors in one room...the fireplace, the window sill and the walls?

OK, here are the images instead of thumbnails :) I picked up the swatch of flax. Don't know what Antique White is, but what I remember when seeing that name is a kind of gray off-white, so that's what I'll try to do.

Looking back at all the pictures, there's really no wall space to speak of on that window wall. What's on the other walls and is the dr adjoining? There are a couple of red x's in your post -- maybe all the pics aren't showing?

Not sure what you mean by too many colors? The dr's brown and then the fr's brown and the white trim? That doesn't sound like too many colors. Brown is also very neutral. Are there other areas adjoining, also, like the kitchen? What are the colors of your furnishings going to be?

Pretty! Nice color choices Squirrel,love the tones. I have to say the dark blue green is gorgeous! But if your not into green I like the deeper stone colors, I dont think the light colors do anything for the fireplace. Nice space!

Here's the flax swatch from their website (paint can version), and the ceiling is more white. The swatch itself is on the righthand wall, so you can see it's similar. It reads a cool brown. The second pic I warmed it up a bit. I don't care for either with your warm, golden stone, as the tones are different. Of course, in real life it might be perfect :) I'd definitely work with the colors in the stone itself (not just a brown you love), as well as whatever furnishings you have.

Thanks squirrel - glad you mentioned it was a drag for you too! I have a Mac - not old, but maybe that is why it took so long for them to open. Somethings won't open at all, so I am always happy to see the reg pics you post.
Back to the cedar - it is, or was, used alot in my area, esp the rough. Some people have tried to lighten it over the years and it looks terrible in my opinion too light. The soft tans and lighter browns actually look really nice. Greys and bluish grey looks great also. Your FP stone is really pretty so you need to pick a color to let that stonework be the center of attention. again, I like your room!

Beautiful home. Love the big windows, the fireplace, and the antique dresser. I wanted RH Flax for my dining room redo, but it did look very dark in my room. Also, it was a good contrast for my armoire and dining set, but not so great for the old very dark sideboard on the opposite wall. If I had had a bigger room, I would have tried it.
You do need a good contrast color for the fireplace stone and if you are working with a mix of RH Cappuchino, Flax, and Antique White, I think you just might have it. The first photo Squirrel posted was my favorite, and on this monitor (not my regular computer) it looked like a dull green. Only go for green if you really want it though. I think the brown combo is going to be wonderful. Flax is pretty deep, but in a well-lighted room, it would be lovely.

Squirrel, the Flax is more cool than warm, but the chip looks a lot deeper in color to me than the Flax in the room scene or on the swatch on the wall. You know how that goes! But I don't necessarily call it a cool color, if it looked really cool, it wouldn't have been in the running for my DR. I go warm all the time.
And I'm looking at everything back on my home computer and it's funny how much different things look on my own monitor. I tend to trust mine more because when I post a pic, like this one of my DR in Northampton Putty,
{{!gwi}}, it comes out pretty close to real life color. This is the area where I wanted to try the Flax, but it was going to show several shades darker than the Putty. My room is only 15' long too.

Thanks, Red :) Yes, I thought the online swatch was probably showing too gray and light also. Beautiful dr! Love the N Putty, it looks like it has some golden green to it, like on wheat.

So maybe it's time to try some paint boards in the RH colors you're looking at, and if you like some of the golds above, try that too?
