We have cabinets painted in Divinity on maple (http://www.medallioncabinetry.com/Product.aspx?productID=161&CategoryID=2) which is a cool off white with the honed jet mist. I really like it - everything is softer. The honed jet mist reminds me of a chalkboard, I don't know why. With the white streaks running through it I am much happier than going with absolute black honed, I think it can help hide any imperfections longer (not that I have any right now!!). We also had polished uba tuba in our old house and I hated the streaks as well. When we went to see a slab, yes, the guy was like, look at the fingerprints just want you to know etc and so we hemmed and hawed a bit about honed but finally said it can't be any worse than the streaks on a polished. I don't really notice any fingerprints. I am a bit fanatical about wiping down the counters right now (for water spots or food stains) but we have only had them for 3 months. All I use is either clorox wipes or just a paper towel with some dish soap. Occasionally I have used the method granite spray. If anyone has any better suggestions let me know! I also have 3 young children and don't believe they have inflicted any damage either. I'll do my best to upload a pic later to help.

Doing a quick online search of cabinetry makers in Charleston doesn't bring up any that advertise as Amish cabinetry makers, though there may be a few which you might find by calling individually. You will probably find a broader selection of Amish cabinetry makers up in Pennsylvania if you are willing to travel that far. QCCI is a one of the larger USA cabinetry companies that has an excellent reputation and is based in Pennsylvania, and I would recommend you checking with them if you are interested in top quality, traditional style. Plain & Fancy is another company that is located in Pennsylvania and has long held a reputation for premium finishes. Some people say it looks like their cabinets were dipped in the coating they are so perfect. Note that QCCI makes everything in house last I knew while Plain & Fancy at least in the past has utilized a third party for box components which means the interiors may not be as high of quality as QCCI's, though the coating may appear superior. Both QCCI and Plain & Fancy are going to be at the top of the price range, however. If you want to save money and look at local cabinetry makers, you have plenty of choices. My caution would be that cabinetry coatings that are not done in a factory where the cabinets are sprayed with two-part, post-catalyzed conversion varnish and heat cured may not provide the durable finish that you think you are paying for. Look for a company that offers a lifetime warranty on finish if you want a kitchen that will last for decades. I do happen to know a young cabinet builder who was trained in the Amish tradition out East and does impeccable work, but he is now located in Claremore, Oklahoma. I discussed having him do my kitchen cabinets and really wish that I had gone with him because I ended up with some issues with the local manufacturer I selected that I do not feel I would have had with him, so it would have been worth it to me to go ahead and navigate the distance. I realize Oklahoma is a long way from Charleston, but you would probably save so much money working with him over a mass manufacturer that it might be worth your effort if you wanted the Amish look and quality. I did my own two-part, post-catalyzed coating on the unfinished cabinetry I ordered, so that was not an issue for me, but you could negotiate with a smaller builder like Tim to take cabinets to a professional finisher or to have the builder use a coating like Envirolak that is one of the few one-part coatings that tests similar to two-part coating durability.

White subway tile to complement Schuler divinity cabinets JubilanteFebruary 17, 2015 We're inching towards completion of our kitchen and just starting to look for backsplash tile. Counters are Virginia Mist granite, antiqued. Anyone have a white they found blends nicely with the divinity painted finish? Thanks! I just found the above post...ugh...nearly a year ago and still need a backsplash...any thoughts, please toss my way.

not to throw you a total curve, but the reason the Hawaiians and missionaries used koa, mango, and other exotic woods is because they stand up to the humidity (I'm on Oahu). You see a lot of teak around the island - also used on boats as it does not swell - but its color is lighter - and often more Scandinavian in design. Rattan used a lot and I love the look, but impossible in my mind to keep really clean looking over time as dust and crumbs fall in. Pacific Craftworks on Oahu sells custom cabinets made from mostly darker colored woods in Viet Nam - another tropical place - that should hold up to Hawaii weather (no affiliation) - some looks like mahogany but different wood. We used them in our master bath and the prices weren't bad. The dark woods are traditional but too much can make the room feel heavy. Hawaiian homes were influenced by missionaries from New England, cowboys, Balinese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Europeans, and plantation owners. So we don't have a purely beach feel - the white rattan look is more East Coast. Tropical is the darker, wider strip, rattan. Here it is all about moss rock, exotic woods, flowers, surfboards, waves, turtles, pineapple, dark sea blues and green foliage mixed with white, cream, and woven mats. If you stick to the white (which will look clean, fresh, and airy) make sure they are quality boxes to hold up to the humidity. For the Hawaii vibe decorate with a few koa or monkeypod (less expensive) chairs, coffee table, or a bowl on your counter, bring in the light and the air and avoid kitsch. Your koa fan will tie into those accents. The one you have chosen is very modern looking and I understand that fewer blades (3 to 4) move more air than 5. Traditionally locals used lots of fans to move the trade winds and homes were designed to pull in the trades. Don't fall for a kitschy fan if it doesn't function well. Suggest any fabrics have local tropical flowers (ginger, heliconia) in large, lush prints. Your inspiration Kauai cottage has beautiful accent pillows that illustrate this - the upholstery is beige but the pillows have heliconia and tropical leaves to bring in color.
