I love Craigslist too! I even turned my 65+ year-old mom onto it. She's always looking for stuff. hehe

I bought my 1 year old ge monogram dual oven stove off of craigslist for 1200 vs almost 4000 new. I love it! There are also some great furniture finds as well. Craigslist has already saved me oodles of $$$ on my new house.

I've had the same experience as you.. years of ebay with all the listing hassles and expense (and sometimes not selling item and stilling having to pay listing fee and then package up and ship item... headache!!).

Craigslist: price not as high (sometimes), but WORLDs easier.

I sold off my old kitchen before renovating for $1500. I stipulated that it had to be picked up by the end of the next day. I had many many people respond. I sold everything to one person for the ease factor. Had I been willing to deal with multiple people I'd have sold it all for much more $$$.

Yes, I love Craigslist too. I have also found my new cleanign lady there as well as baby sitters and maybe a part time job!

I'll chime in, too. I love Craigslist. And I love Freecycle, too - check it out if you haven't already. (free + recycle = freecycle) it is by city also and you have to register. Not as smooth as Craigslist in terms of how you post, but a great way to get rid of stuff. I've gotten rid of sections of fence, clothes, boxes of used tile -- all sorts of stuff that otherwise might end up in the landfill.

As for Craigslist, I just bought a brand new in box Kitchenaid compactor (retail $675) for $375! I just sold a countertop from my old laundry room - the woman was delighted to have it as it matched her kitchen floor perfectly and her boyfriend was going to install it for her. Fabulous!

My sister just bought at awesome bed on Craigslist.

Count me in. It's helped with all sorts of stuff. Looking for tenants and roomates.
The bad part is their labor category. It is full of fly by nights, liars and harrassers. This area of craigslist proved to be a nightmare. It is full of criminally minded people with no skills. People with no skills or papers demand to be paid more than university educated professionals. On advance before the job starts. These guys are bullies who dream their life away.

I was running a free advocate ad to help people with various consumer issues
including coaching them to learn their way around the court system, how to obtain medical records efficiently from stubborn doctors and hospitals , etc.

Some meanie (probably craig himself) eventually decided no one should get free advocacy on his website so they eventually blocked it.
If you have knowledge why not share it?

Craigslist is a great resource for remodeling. In our most recent kitchen project, we were able to sell our old range, refrigerator, dishwasher, faucet, and cabinet hardware, which not only generated a modest amount of revenue to support the remodel, but also diverted these items from landfill to reuse.

We also used Craigslist to acquire stuff, too. We bought a brand-new Viking range and a used Viking range hood at substantial savings, and we found our stainless steel countertop fabricator through Craigslist as well!

Apart from remodeling, we've also used Craigslist to buy/sell furniture, hire a wedding photographer, and find roommates.

I love Craigslist in theory, I have just had so many people flake out on me. They are SOOOO interested and I wait around all day for them and they never show. However, I did find some great furniture a few years ago for dirt cheap. It is much better than ebay though, free to list and you don't have to ship etc.

OK.. don't know why this is posted in our area (Barrie Ontario)on Craigslist.. but I WANT this... can't get it lol.. but maybe someone else???

I also love it and have found furniture (kitchen table and chairs) and sold furniture (dining room table and chairs), but the best has been getting rid of free stuff. I had years of old (1960-70's) Gourmet magazines that I had held on to foolishly but needed to be rid of. Several people wanted them within an hour of posting. I was so glad to not just throw them in the recycling bin. Someone also wanted my 1960's cookbooks. And I agree, everyone who has come to my house to pick things up has been someone I would enjoy knowing.

I sell plants from home, and had basically dried up my local market, and on a whim, decided to list on Craigslist under farm and garden- response was fantastic! So much so that I will be changing my marketing scheme for next year to include plants that sold out within hours (ie dwarf black stemmed bamboo). I was amazed at how far people came from, and like many of the above, felt I could be fast friends with lots of them!

Only 'problem' with an active market like mine, is that there are so MANY listings to go through, it can be quite time-consuming!!!

OK, I have never used craigslist but it sounds amazing.

I echo the echos! We have sold excess furniture and old stove kitchen aid dw etc with ease- every one showed up on time and paid the price agreed upon no quibbling or scamming.We have bought some great stuff- dining room, a welsh cabinet and the latest a french made cabinet that I painted and glazed and that will hold the tv.( all add up to a total of under $400 inclusive!) Also got an awesome free wicker loveseat that I painted for our front porch. Got 3000 antique bricks free for the loading.( stacked behind garage awaiting design plan)
Even for free stuff- people usually offer it to the one who responds first!
My DH is used to getting an email at the office saying look at this listing what do you think when can you get off work? do you have any cash? ( and yeah I am at my office too)
We always say we meet the nicest people on CL! In the baltimore /DC CL area so nice folks are not confined to more rural areas.
Why Ebay when you can CL?

I have practically furnished my entire new (old) house with craigslist. Much better quality of furniture than I could afford new, and I've gotten several appliances for the interim period before my kitchen got demo'd.

I sold my old, 15 year old golden oak kitchen cabinets on Craigslist for $2800. It was a nice chunk of change to put towards my new kitchen, and the old cabinets didn't end up going into the landfill.

does everyone here live in a major metro area? I don't. I listed something once, with pics, and got zero responses. Unfortunately, I think when you live in a smaller town, it's not so great. But I will try again!! Happy to hear that it really works for some.

I too love craigslist... found some great stuff for free or cheap. Met nice people. Found good jobs. Got rid of some stuff.

Also the best of craigslist can be both hilarious and touching at times. More often hilarious it seems.

Okay, speaking of Craigslist...I found this listing for a butcher block, is this a good price? Should I go for it?

besides the 150 price, it says make me an offer. I would offer much less for starters (although I have no idea what the price would normally be).

i sold some of my appliances on Craigslist but i did get approached by one obvious scammer. He said yes immediately to all of my prices without viewing the items, he told me that he was deaf and so i couldn't call him, and he claimed that he would mail me a certified check and hire someone to pick up the stuff. the next day, he sent an email saying that his secretary mistakenly wrote the check out for 4000 dollars or some inflated amount and would i kindly reimburse him the balance, minus a little something "for my trouble". This is a known scam, certified checks CAN be faked and you would be fined if you try to deposit them. I think everyone already knows about this scam but please be aware and alert your non-regular internet user relatives.
