Honing marble: how much lighter will the veins get?

I'm interested in some calacatta polished marble at a local store (not to busy looking nor too white) but because it's somewhere in the middle, I'm concerned it could end up w/ next to no veining whatsoever after it's honed.

Anyone have experience w/ this?

I don't think it's going to change that much. I bought mine polished and had it honed. I certainly didn't feel like it was a different piece of stone when they installed it. It doesn't get lighter so much as there is a light etching -- like a lightly etched or frosted glass or a haze like a slightly out of focus picture. . The color is still there -- just not so sharp, so it may seem less intense. Does that help?

I just had my "honed" marble installed yesterday. It lightened up a little bit but the veining looks beautiful and it has a "softer" appearance. I love the way it looks and feels.

I think it's silly to think a plastic product will look like stone or to think anyone is expecting it to. It's an alternative to laminate if you don't want stone and has its own individual look, sometimes with patterns inspired by nature, like many other products/creations do. Of course they look like plastic but are much better looking than they used to be, with various sheens. I would not buy a counter sight unseen. See where it retails and look for displays. Check with big box stores and k&b supply stores. K&b design stores too. Ask the manuf for a sample you can see, feel and test for durability.

I'm with Jewel654, have you looked at the porcelains? Here is a few that I was looking at. I went with the large one shown here in the center. Thats a pan of snow. The large tile is called Atlas Concorde, Marvel Calacatta Extra, and is from Italy. I chose the matte finish, and this sample is matte. I bought it through Nebraska Furniture Mart. They were very helpful and gave me a discount as well. The other tiles shown are a variety of other tile samples. The tile is ever so slightly warm and looks beautiful with my walnut vanity and woodwork in the bathroom that I finished this past summer:

Marble countertops, marble floor too much?

Don't get me wrong, we love wood floors. But 10 years later they look bad...very BAD. I mean it's embarrassing to have people over it's so bad. It just seems a shame to put something in that 10 years later will require my parents to move all the furniture out of their house again so that the floors can be refinished! We definitely like the marble floors with minimal veining - it's way too much for us to have all those gray carrara stripes going in all directions. She actually was thinking we'd have to get the heated flooring. I guess we just need to look for a warmer grayish floor that won't clash with the carrara counters. We also thought of marble floors in the kitchen and wood everywhere else? It's a total open floor plan, though, so we would need nice transitions. Anyone ever used these metal edges you see in the tile stores (link posted below)? I just held the marble tile up to the store display...you have to imagine a matching wood floor on the other side. PS - How do I paste in an actual photo? The instructions/help indicate there is supposed to be a "browse" button on the "preview" step of posting my message. Am I blind? Oh, golly. I wish I'd've known you were going to flush the soil. You can unpot the plant after flushing and set it in the tub/shower on a stack of newspapers/ paper bags/ old towels/ anything absorbant. This will pull/ wick the excess water out of the root mass. You can then used a wick (see fig 'E' below) and other tips you can find here (click on link) to reduce the amount of water the soil will retain after a thorough watering. If you repot now, your plant will probably suffer a much longer recovery time than it would if you wait until summer to start the work. You should learn to work with your plants' best interest in mind by synchronizing your work with the plants natural rhythms so the plant is better able to tolerate the indignities you'll heap on it in the name of providing it with the cultural conditions it needs to realize as much of it's genetic potential as possible. That's your main job, you know? - identifying and eliminating to the greatest degree possible, those things that are limiting your plant. i have calacatta gold. when i chose my slabs they were polished. they were just installed last week and now they are honed ...no noticeable difference as far as i can tell. but my slabs are on the "loud" side anyway with a lot of movement and different tonal values so maybe that has something to do with it? i can say with confidence, if you like the stone polished you'll love it honed! jmo. good luck!

On my honed carrara tub surround and thresholds the darkest grey lines got somewhat lighter and softer when my DH honed them, but there was not a huge difference.

Thanks so much everyone! In addition to honing, I'm also having the 12" x 12" tiles cut to 2x6 so let's hope the fabricator (who hopefully will also hone?) is affordable!

The tiles I got seem somewhere in the middle, intensity or color-wise. The background is white and the veins are both grey and beige. Lots of plain white areas as well. I'm hoping in the end to have soft, subtle veining.

One other quesiton: once cut, is there a direction I should do things to keep things from looking too busy? With slab, thicker and splotchier veins are okay but with tile, they go in all kinds of directions I imagine, without some sort of effort to make it all flow? Or maybe not - I have no idea! Suggestions?
