Toe kick drawers - worth it or a waste?
Comments (60)We had toekick drawers at our last house and found them very useful - thanks Gardenweb! The baking one held cookie cutters, sprinkles, and other smaller or seasonal stuff. The one here held platters. I had another one for table linens, etc. It isn't too obvious in this pic, but my toekick drawers had a lip at the top. I would just open the drawer with my toe because, at 6', I didn't want to be down there looking for a handle. Even at my height, I didn't have any problem reaching the stuff in the drawer (because I was reaching from the top and the drawer is shallow enough that you aren't rifling through it looking for a plethora of items), but I didn't store anything in there that I'd use every day. Note that our tile was installed under the cabinetry (otherwise the drawer may run into the flooring). When we sold the house, these were the sorts of things that drew raves about functionality....See MoreToe Kick Drawer Hardware?
Comments (9)is this a problem for crawlers? Not for the slides I have installed. A crawler wouldn't be strong enough to push the drawer in. A strong toddler might be able to, but their face would most likely be above the drawer line. If the drawer has something in it, it pops out slower and not as far. An empty drawer will pop out quicker and farther, but there's no mass so it also takes less to stop. How high is the inside of the drawer? I'm thinking that it's about 2 1/2"? Is that right? Mine drawers are 2.25" deep. But there is about 2.5" of head room. Did you use the transparent contact paper over the entire front of the toekick drawer? I wrapped the entire drawer front. Do you have to push in around the center area or can you push it anywhere along the bottom for it to come out? You can push anywhere on the face of the drawer, which is why I wrapped the entire drawer front with transparent contact paper....See MoreA really easy way to make toe kick drawers! Will this work?
Comments (5)This sure is one of those projects that would be MUCH better done as the cabinets were built! Not, alas, the case for me. I have ordered one of the slides and will post some more info about then when I have looked at it. Deedles. What I really like about the Rockler slides is that they make building the drawer so easy. Just slide the bottom in place and screw the front and back to the mounts. Cut three pieces and screw two of them in place and you are finished! The OT glides you linked seem to require building a drawer the traditional way, and I think considerably more side clearance is required. But the full extension plus would be VERY desirable. Thank you for sending this link. Scrappy, From the pictures I am estimating that I will lose less than 1/2" depth with the Rockler slides. I suspect that any slides would require that there be some space between the bottom of the drawer and the shelf below. Of course, I will also loose some space to the false bottom that must be built for the cradle. I am hoping I can use 1/4" plywood for that. Andrea Look at the OT glides Deedles linked above. They would be VERY nice....See Moretoe kick drawers
Comments (8)I think Love's toe kick drawers are about the best around. Had I seen those, I'd have copied them myself, but if you go with a simpler drawer, I'll tell you what mine are (we have 3 rooms with toe kick drawers). My son's (in his bathroom...he's 3) is 4 1/2 deep (the area you're specifically asking about). This is to accomidate turning the drawer upside down (it's reinforced) to use as a step stool up to the sink a bit. My master bath toe kicks are 4" as well, and they're built to be hidden (not obvious) unlike my kitchen, which are 3.5" and given that I've put handles on them, they're not hidden. One key to a toe kick drawer (not like Loves) is full extension glides. You already loose a few inches where the cabinet overhangs, so full extention gives you as much as you can get in room. In the kitchen, we'd lose a lot of function on the base cabs that are 24" deep if they weren't full extension. I also have them for my sinks, but they're only about 15" or so deep to accomidate the pipes running up from the floor...but even that little space is useful for extra sponges, etc. I love my toe kick drawers...and during the appraisal the appraisor went nuts over them heh heh...See Moresojay
