toe kick drawers

I think toe kick drawers are a wonderful use of wasted space. But, since we are building our own cabinets we are having a problem finding out the exact height they should be. Could any of you with toe kick drawers measure from the floor up to the bottom of your main cabinet box. In other words, not the height of the drawer, but the actual toe kick space.

I am in the process of getting bids for new cabinets. One of the cabinet guys said they would have to be 4 inches high.

Hi Lori, The drawer box is made to go down to almost the floor and is moved by super duper hardware-slides or glides, I guess. I can't see the hardware. My particular tk drawer is made like loves2cook4six where the toekick part is part of a large lower drawer-and there is no separate hardware or construction for the toekick part. Altho, I think that these particular pics of Loves' show 'a drawer within a drawer', in addition to toekick drawers. There are other tk drawers where the tk drawer is only as high as the toe kick area and there is a separate drawer right above. The toekick drawer space is maybe no taller than 8 inches high. There are probably other ways to construct tk drawers. I was so concerned about you getting what I believe to be inaccurate info that I called my grandson and asked if he would please post a couple of pics of my kitchen. So he came over and he monkeyed with my computer and posted these 3 photos. They are, tada, ta da, the very first pics of my kitchen ever posted-and my kitchen was completed in mid 2011. So this is a special thread to me! They are not the best quality photos but I hope they convey my thoughts. I so love my kitchen, and especially the cabinetry. Now my grandson and I will get together and belatedly post my kitchen on gw, hopefully.

This sure is one of those projects that would be MUCH better done as the cabinets were built! Not, alas, the case for me. I have ordered one of the slides and will post some more info about then when I have looked at it. Deedles. What I really like about the Rockler slides is that they make building the drawer so easy. Just slide the bottom in place and screw the front and back to the mounts. Cut three pieces and screw two of them in place and you are finished! The OT glides you linked seem to require building a drawer the traditional way, and I think considerably more side clearance is required. But the full extension plus would be VERY desirable. Thank you for sending this link. Scrappy, From the pictures I am estimating that I will lose less than 1/2" depth with the Rockler slides. I suspect that any slides would require that there be some space between the bottom of the drawer and the shelf below. Of course, I will also loose some space to the false bottom that must be built for the cradle. I am hoping I can use 1/4" plywood for that. Andrea Look at the OT glides Deedles linked above. Quick question about toe kick drawers

Cabinets are going in today and my cabinet guy is worried that the tk drawers will scrape the floor. He wants to leave a 1/4" gap under the drawer to address this potential problem. I'm wondering if this is standard and if it will look ok. Any potential problems with the gap such as dog hair accumulating in there?

Yeah, we have one and it just holds the shallow roasting pans that used to be under the broiler in our old range (now we have two ovens, so no drawer there). It's barely worth including, let alone rearranging important stuff for!

Well, I can tell you for SURE that mine are way higher than that. It all depends on the profile you are after. Mine come up into the the cabinet so I have one shallow top drawer for utensil storage, placemats etc, then 3 usefully deep drawers including the toekick area. The front of the drawer follows the profile of the toekick/cabinet so there is a little shelf in the front of the drawer.

These three pictures are the toekick drawers in the Butler's Pantry before the handles went on. BTW, we delibrately left off the handles on these drawers so the finished bank looks like there are only 6 drawers when in fact there are 8

And this is one of my best toe kick drawers. You open the toekick drawer and inside are two more draws for storing cans. It's in my prep area so right where I need it. Talk about maximizing storage

I think Love's toe kick drawers are about the best around. Had I seen those, I'd have copied them myself, but if you go with a simpler drawer, I'll tell you what mine are (we have 3 rooms with toe kick drawers). My son's (in his bathroom...he's 3) is 4 1/2 deep (the area you're specifically asking about). This is to accomidate turning the drawer upside down (it's reinforced) to use as a step stool up to the sink a bit.

My master bath toe kicks are 4" as well, and they're built to be hidden (not obvious) unlike my kitchen, which are 3.5" and given that I've put handles on them, they're not hidden.

One key to a toe kick drawer (not like Loves) is full extension glides. You already loose a few inches where the cabinet overhangs, so full extention gives you as much as you can get in room. In the kitchen, we'd lose a lot of function on the base cabs that are 24" deep if they weren't full extension. I also have them for my sinks, but they're only about 15" or so deep to accomidate the pipes running up from the floor...but even that little space is useful for extra sponges, etc.

I love my toe kick drawers...and during the appraisal the appraisor went nuts over them heh heh

What is the net depth of the toe kick drawer with a standard toe kick height? My cabinet maker said 1.5-2 inches. Is that going to be useful space?
