Odd Shaped Kitchen Remodel
Comments (14)I like benjesbride's suggestion for your kitchen. It's the most cost effective and it's functional. I would add a banquette to the nook to make the best use of space in that room. And you'd gain storage if you add drawers to the benches. Here's a slight modification to benjesbride's kitchen plan with a banquette in the nook. I opted to create a corner walk-in pantry to make use of that odd space created by the water pipe. You'll need to make sure you have enough room between pantry and fridge so that the fridge door is able to swing fully open. As long as the side wall of the pantry does not protrude further than the fridge box, you should be okay. Here's a banquette booth with a back higher than the counter. I am, however, suggested padded backs for more comfortable seating like this: with bench drawers at the end like these: You could also do a banquette set-up like this: I reduced the depth of the broom closet, too, so that there's a better connection between family room and nook and also to make the space feel more spacious. Here's a slight kitchen modification. This does put the DW in the prep zone but it also creates a much longer stretch of counter between sink and range. To make up for loss of a few upper cabinets, you can add shelves in front of the window like this: I'm suggesting an apron sink for the corner sink in keeping with the age of your home and also to help make sure you have room behind the sink for the faucet (can't tell how far out the brick wall protrudes)....See MoreChoosing cabinet color in new construction... STRESSED OUT!
Comments (34)funkycamper, don't worry about stressing me out! Building this house and being pregnant with my first child has made me pretty much perpetually stressed out. I wasn't even really given any notice that I needed to be the one who helped design the house before construction started. My husband's family owned the lot and we thought we could get more money if we built a house on it and sold it (rather than just selling the lot)--but then we figured we might as well live in it for 2 years to claim residence to limit the taxes. So that's when it became my husband and I's task since we were actually going to live in it. So I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off! haha! The plumbing is too far down the road to really do much movement of sink/DW in the kitchen. Is there a way to make the peninsula more inviting to be primary prep space instead of secondary prep space, to limit the interference with the dishwasher? At least if it is totally annoying I won't have to live with it forever. And hopefully it wouldn't be something someone buying the home would notice. We are planning on remodeling the current house we're in while we're living in this one, so I can learn a lot from any mistakes I make here. Which sounds totally selfish to whoever buys this house, but it will probably be a vacation home anyway. And yeah, the fridge is a Sub Zero built-in (not the integrated one), so it has that grill at the top. A battle I lost with my husband. I like the integrated ones better, but they don't have a french door option :(...See MoreHeight of your toe kick drawers
Comments (10)@gemcap ok I finally put one of the IKEA drawer together. It's 3 7/8" from bottom of slide to top of drawer. Inside the drawer, it's 3 5/8" H from top to bottom. I spent $7 for the 24" drawer and $5 for the 15" ones. You will need the toekick panel to make the drawer front. I also just found 4" drawers yesterday at the local Habitat. They are plywood with birch veneer and fully finished. Ironically it was donated by the "custom" cabinet maker that my next door neighbor used for his $30K kitchen cabinets. The cabinet guy bought them from a local mill. The taller drawers were all taken by some GCs already but I was able to snag several 36" drawer for my larger cabinet toekicks. The drawers were $2/each and will cost a total of $8 after I buy the glides at $6/each. These are much more budget friendly toekick drawers for me vs the quotes of $120-450/drawer depending on size....See MoreHeat register right where I want a toe kick drawer
Comments (8)Yeah, we have one and it just holds the shallow roasting pans that used to be under the broiler in our old range (now we have two ovens, so no drawer there). It's barely worth including, let alone rearranging important stuff for!...See Moreigloochic
