LOL! I dunno about that last part - but regarding the bedroom, I do just happen to have some pics at the ready! These aren't super-current - there have been a few tweaks made here and there since these were taken, but they'll give you a general idea of the space. By the way, I printed out that wonderful photo of your barn room and have been drooling over it! I love the chair that is shown to the left - is that Ranch Oak (or something along those lines)? I remember seeing a similar chair on CL several months ago and thinking it'd go so well in my bedroom, but passing it by because it was a bit pricey for me. ::sigh:: I just love the way your space is rustic, yet warm and comfy looking. That's what I want to achieve in my space, so your thoughts, ideas, suggestions are more than welcome! (Just don't say paint the paneling. Not going there. ;-))

Oh, what a wonderful retreat when you want to be "away". How cozy....and big! Do you use it a lot? How rustic do you want to get? Mine is actually sort of a microcosm of our 1880's ranch house in CO that I sold after I lost my husband in 2003. It's a nice size room and there's also my Hoosier Cab, the kit table and chairs from the ranch, a mission style rocker and a wood stove...that is really electric but we made OUT of wood lol.

PAINT knotty pine...not this girl! We put in the paneling and also the same cedar on the floor.

If you wanted to go rustic, you'd probably want to "de-feminize" I guess. Maybe move some of your Indian blankets up there or bring in that type of design in fabrics. I also have ticking, old quilts, old camp blankets, kerosene lamps, and the colors stay in the deep jewel tones for most part. Twig furniture is great, old commodes, dry sinks, wash stands,...whateva floats your boat!

Re: the horse head chair? (If the head is showing..sometimes I throw a blanket there.) No it's not oak, it's pine. And there was actually a 7' sofa that matched! I passed on that...it was torn pretty badly anyway.

That was a steal at $100 and the leather is in perfect condition. That same day I also picked up a chair from the 50's that had wagon wheels on the sides...$20 lol! That went in our bunkhouse...oh, you'd probably love that too! It had been the old chicken house.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, ya'll. The raccoons actually come down the trees into the fenced dog yard when they don't want to walk around the fence. Or, they try to walk on top of the fence, it's chainlink! Or, they drop like paratroopers onto the roof, but they only do thatin the middle of the night, when I'm finally in that really good deep sleep. One night they landed on the roof and ran back and forth over the bedroom, the big dogs running back and forth under the window barking. What gets me is that the garbage cans are on the other end of the house and they can easily go around the fence to get to the food and water. I think they enjoy the chaos. I think it's some sort of raccoon gang ritual, they can't join the club if they don't successfully finish a mission. They crack me up when they move the garbage cans. The cans have locking lids so they can't get into them, but they used to knock them over. I've trained them not to tip them over. I used a dog training method where you put 10-15 pennies in a soda can and rubber band some plastic wrap on top, them set the cans on whatever you want to train the animals not to get on. When they try to get on the trashcans they knock off the soda cans and it makes a big racket. It only took a couple of nights and they stopped knocking the garbage over. It worked soo well that they learned how to move the trashcans without making the soda cans fall over. I tried the soda can thing on the container where I keep the dog and cat food. But this box is only about 18 inches tall and those 'coon figured out how to pick up the soda cans and set them down on the floor without dropping too many. They amaze me. We had lights on motion sensors, but they very quickly learned not to run away from the lights. A funny thing happened one night - My mother-in-law was having diner with us and this happened right outside the dining room window.) One of 'em landed on top of a wide metal cabinet and BAM the light came on, and he tried to scramble away but couldn't get any traction so his little claws just clanged and scrambled to the left and then to the right, and then he tried to jump straight up but flipped off the back instead. It was like the lights came on and the darned 'coon started tap dancing. Now she jokes about how I train raccoons as well dogs. Another funny happened when we were getting the house ready to move into. (The previous tennents only went outside to throw bags of trash in the yard, so the raccoons where used to feasting.) I was here cleaning late one night all alone and went out to have a smoke. Well, a couple minutes after I sat down on the porch some huge creature jumped up on the railing near my head. Well, I screamed and it screamed and I ran for the door and it fell off the porch. That was my first night alone in this house and my first experience with these raccoons. It took us a while to figure out why the raccoons would come to the house when we would go out on the porch. Like I said earlier, the prev tenants only came on the porch to throw bags of garbage into the yard. They did this for years. I guess the raccoons associated the opening of the porch door with food. Some kind of Pavlovian response, huh? So you see, we moved into their neighborhood, it's just taking us a while to learn all the new rules. **Hey Wild4wildlife, I worked at a vet hospital before we moved here, and it's true that deer can jump 6 foot privacy fence. Many times we'd get called out to a client's property because deer would jump the fence. The deer would either have a broken leg from getting caught on the fence OR the deer would be confused on how to get back out of the yard. The strangest was a doe that had gotten into a 2nd story corn crib, without a ladder. The only way she could've gotten up there was by getting on top of a truck and jumping the remaining 4-5 feet into the open door. You know, I thought I left all these wildlife shenanagens behind when I moved out of the country and into the suburbs. Ya'll take care

I guess i don't understand the point of the secondary drain. I've seen when drains clog with mold, but that's only after many years.... so I don't know what the secondary drain would accomplish here. A malfunctioning TXV could cause it to ice, as well as low charge and restricted airflow... but usually you see that in a cap tube system since the TXV is regulating the flow into the evaporator based on evaporator temp. I understand that it produces a lot of water, but you have a cutoff system in place. A secondary water barrier should prevent water damage as long as the cutoff is working. It's not so much that the volume of ice is too big to be contained by the pan... it's that it extends beyond the pan to the suction line and the possibly the coil housing. If it were iced up like that, you should be getting almost no airflow through the unit. "The tech who came yesterday did check the charge and said there was good pressure (but he also recharged it)." ... those things are mutually exclusive. You don't add refrigerant to a unit that is properly charged. What's more, you don't guess at the charge and you can't properly charge a unit where the TXV has failed because sub-cooling is the the only acceptable way to determine the proper charge. Look, if it's icing, you really need to see that. You can't guess unless you see why the unit is leaking... you have already done that and you've had to repaint the ceiling a couple of times.

Thank you both for your replies. I am in Michigan. John Manville makes a 2 inch foiled faced rigid foam board. I am concerned about the warmth being/staying in the bathroom not the garage. So perhaps because of my climate I could just use plain 2 inch XPS. But I was told to use the foil faced because it is fire proof. Mike and energy rater the garage temperature is the same. I wanted to use the foam board to reflect back and keep the bathroom warmer. The insulation company told me to place the foil face into the wall, that way any heat in the bathroom will reflect back into the bathroom. Boy this is so confusing to me. There is a heat vent in the bathroom under the vanity. I realize what you are saying about the supply problem in the bathroom, thank you for that. Interesting that I wouldn't see a difference in temperature in the bathroom with putting foam board on the garage side of the wall. I just had blown in cellulose in the attic and that is what the insulation guys told me,...to add the foam board to the garage wall that shares with it the bathroom wall. The other issue I have is the bathroom fan. The insulation company added the cellulose up to R49 and air sealed the attic...it is warmer on my second floor. BUT here is my question...The bathroom fan a new Panasonic when I first turn it on there is a whoosh of cold air that first comes out of it. I realize that there could be cold air sitting there at first on the attic side. BUT I felt it last night with the fan turned ON and there is a bit of cold air that circulates at the top of the fan. I stuck a tissue up there and it definitely sucks the air out of the room but it is weird. Needless to say it is it is chilly in the bathroom when taking a shower until the bathroom heats up from the steam of warm water from the shower. . Does anyone have any thoughts on that?? The duct from the bathroom fan is vented out to the roof and is an insulated duct. The only thought I may have is that it is not properly air sealed on the attic side. Any thoughts or ideas are most greatly appreciated. I am a new homeowner and am new at learning all of this. Your patience is most greatly appreciated.

I am not an 18 year veteran of the solar attic however I had a PCS3 from 2002 till last year. I have owned a Solar Attic system. I purchased it from solar Attic directly around 2002 I owned rental property so I had the advantage of having the maintenance people to assist me in the Installation. I talked directly with the engineer/owner/designer of the system. He was and has been very helpful over the years. As a matter of fact I emailed with him just a few day ago. OUR INSTALLATION We build a pan 4 inches deep and 6 inches larger than the PCS3 system all the way around. We equipped it with a 2 inch drain which we eventually put a cut off on in that we had a float switch system cutoff that was in parallel with the emergency cut off in side the PCS3. The reason we put a cut off and an additional emergency float switch was that the longer I thought about it having the system pump 25000 gallons of water into the catch pan with a two inch drain would not be able to remove water fast enough than it would be better to just have the system shut down so the issue could be corrected. We mounted the unit about 5 feet off of the attic decking to get it as high and in the hottest area as possible. That installation we did with rigid 2" pvc We had 2 90 degree elbows and a total of 5 joints that got the water out of the attic. In the beginning I had some of the same concerns that have been brought up here about a possible leak however considering the fact that almost all of the water pipes in this house are PVC as are 99% of all of the water pipes in all of the houses built in america are PVC and the fact that the water pressure in the solar attic system is as I understand it less than the pressure that your home water system has a leak is not very likely. OK, so here we go. We had to pump the water up 2 stories. In that this was a close loop system with strategic check valves our concern for the 1.5 HP (up rated) pump being able to move the water was quickly retired as soon as we started the system. No problem. Great flow. The quality of the product was good. The unit was well designed, thought out and put together. The only moving part on the system was a GE electric motor that could be manually adjusted from low to medium to high speed. This would change the flow of the air over the heat exchanger. I came set on medium an after 5 years of messing with the speed it is now set on medium. We used their electronic control system which consisted to a electric control valve and an electronic controller that detected the temperature in the attic and the temperature of the pool water. If the attic got to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the pool water the unit would come on and stay on till the water got warmer than the set point. We had system on a time and regardless of how the system was set we turned the pool pump off at 11PM and on at 9AM In 2015 we sold that house and the solar attic system went along with it. Our new home has a slightly smaller pool and an electric heat pump from heat siphon(325Kbtu) system. We are thinking of installing a solar attic PCS3 in conjunction with the electric heat pump. The cost to run the PCS3 is about $10 per month for the GE Fan motor. My electric bill for the Heat Siphon is $300 plus per month. As I am writing this the time is 2:36P EST in Atlanta Georiga. The outside temperature is 73F Degrees and the attic Temperature is 105F. At this rate we would have in our house that had the Solar attic system have turned the system on at this point. This would have started the heating process. Unlike electric or gas systems where the heat will start immediately the solar attic system will raise the temperature however this is over a period of time. If you installed a solar attic system in July and started it up on July 4th you probably would not see the water temperature rise quickly. I would say it would talk a week or more to bring the temperature to its set point. My current pool is a free form pebble tec with about 15,000 gals of water. With a solar attic system if it operates as my last system did I will have the largest hottub in the north Atlanta are. It can and will bring the water temperature to 95 degrees. My wife likes warm water. As I see it the biggest draw back is the price. If the system were priced in the $2000 range, for the basic system and $2500 range for the full electronic system this would be a product everyone would have like a salt system or LED lighting. A $2000 adder to you Aquilink system is small dollars with a great reward.

Oh, Tiffany lamps add a LOT to this type of look. Mine are cheapies bought years ago at Lowes. But they're not bad quality at all...very heavy. Instead of vase lamps, look at old brass ones or old bridge lamps, cheap Tiffany's...that kind of thing. Everything but everything came from cheap flea markets or I made... a few things off Ebay.

These people on here think THEY have addictions...OY, I was something else years ago! But furnishing the 900 sf ranch house was the most fun I think I've ever had...just sooo different than our home in the 'burbs.

Thank you, Jan! I really love the space. It was converted in 1948 to be the bedroom for the teenage boy who was living in this house at the time. I've met his sisters and they tell me that he used to threaten them to stay out of his private retreat by telling them that the knot-holes in the knotty pine were actually EYES watching them. LOL!

Thanks for the thoughts on going more rustic too. I agree that I'd need to de-feminize the room a bit, but there are a few things I have on display of a girly nature that have sentimental value, so ... Still, love the idea for changing out my fabric choices, particularly the bedding. My present comforter is getting a bit worn anyway, so maybe I will look for something with a Pendleton blanket styling to replace it with when the time comes. I love the bench shown in your photo, and the way you turned an old shutter into a magazine rack is pure genius! I love twig furniture as well, and can definitely envision that in my space. The little sitting area that contains the blue chair remains a work in progress. Thanks to one of my bratty cats totally shredding the footstool shown in the pic, I'm on the lookout for something to replace it with. I know I can do better with the lighting in this space too ... love your mission style lamps!

You did indeed "steal" that leather horsey-head chair! The one I saw advertised was $375 if I recall correctly, and I just couldn't swing it - although I realized it wasn't a terrible price for such a cool old chair (and it too was in pristine condition). I actually love the old wagon wheel stuff that a lot of people think is junky. It just brings back a lot of memories, and I think it's kitschy and fun now.

I really, really, really hope you'll post more pics of your barn room or bunkhouse, or any other space you have that will give me more ideas! You have an amazing eye for detail, and I don't mind telling you that I'd love to copy some of your ideas. If you don't mind, that is. ;-)

We're near Newburyport, MA which is a beautiful, historic harbor town. My barn room really fits eh? lol

Well, I've got to get the paint off me...it's been a loooong 9 hrs of painting those cupboards today. Ready to crash. :)

Thank you, Kathleen! They are most definitely my sweet babies, but they do have their "moments." They often cuddle together on the bed upstairs when the weather is chilly outside, no matter how toasty it is inside. And, of course, that always makes me want to sink down right in the midst of all of them! ;-)

Jan, are you finished with those cupboards yet? With the inspiration you've provided, I did a bit of rearranging in my bedroom over the weekend. I also removed the old-ladyish ruffle from around the bottom of the blue chair, so now it's simply a straightforward wingback and it looks infinitely better. (However, the cats are ticked off at losing a favorite hiding spot!) The big ol' ottoman that you see in the pic in front of the blue chair has been replaced with a smaller footstool with more of a mission look to it, making it a much better choice. (Actually, the big ottoman had been used as a scratching post by a certain bratty feline, and he had ripped the stuffing out of it so badly that I just had DH put it out at the curb. Somebody came along and picked it up within about 10 minutes, so at least it didn't go to waste. ;-))

I brought in a larger southwest-style wool rug to go in the nook beneath the blue chair. I've got a table next to that chair (the floor lamp is gone) and I'm going to look for a new lamp shade to replace the one on the table lamp, which is a bit too formal for the space. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for ways that I can go more rustic in this space - I'd like more of that homey lodge, camp, cabin look. But I'm resigned to leave a few feminine touches, and I think it'll all mesh well together.

I'm closing in fast on finishing the cupboards up today. Had to run out and buy some sizing as I'm wallpapering the inside top part. Have to poly some parts inside yada, yada.

.....butting in here simply to say I've loved this cozy room since I first saw it. As for that knotty pine.....I and and most, if not all, the forum folks here would come and take you out if you threatened to paint that gorgeous stuff!
