OK, Peacock Blue going up..but what else?

I have lost my mind. Next Friday, I am hosting a rehearsal dinner for DS and DDIL-to-be; we got the floors finished in four days (brick pavers...they look wonderful!) and decided that we just HAD to get the crummy wallpaper off the walls in the DR and entryway...oh, gosh. Well, DR is off and I decided on the Peacock Blue, BM 2049-40. However, I have a vaulted ceiling there and in the entry, connected rooms, and my decorator suggested SW Portobella...and I'm not so sure. Both rooms face north. What do you all think? Would a gold work? Entryway goes into a huge living area (the only large living space) and it's BM Gray Wisp. Just got a beautiful rug this morning with the blue, cream, gold, and mostly a beautiful, rich red. I wish there was a way to use an eggplant or aubergine..don't know why I like it! But, it wouldn't really go here. Decorator said to do the entry the same as the ceiling in the DR as they are so open to each other! HELP!! I trust you all more than anyone else..thanks!

The Peacock Blue sounds like a beautiful color! Personally, I like to balance out a deep color by using a lighter one. You might want to look at a medium *warm* tan, not beige, which is a cool color. IMO, too many dark colors make for a dark dismal space, and leave the eye looking for something light. ;o)

gigi - how do you like your BM Gray wisp? I am planning on painting this weekend with that color in the bedroom.

The peacock blue sound nice - good luck with your party.

Well, there are a few other grasses but none of them will do well on less water than bermuda grass and still give you that look of a solid, lovely green carpet if that's the look you are going for. St. Augustine is a lovely wider-bladed grass but it needs more water than bermuda. Zoysia might or might not do as well. Some people say it does, but I've never seen a Zoysia yard that handled our extreme heat as well as Bermuda does. Some people grow the improved forms of buffalo grass or blue grama, but they are clumping type grasses. They are great for a xeriscape. However, if you live in a neighborhood where there is great peer pressure to have a lawn that resembles a green carpet, the clumping grasses wouldn't be your best choice. Since you already have an established bermuda lawn, I think I'd focus on improving it and fixing what is wrong with it instead of starting over with something else. Who says neutral has to be colorless? Who says only beiges and browns are neutrals? IMO almost anything that comes from the earth is neutral. That means all granites and all wood tones, as long as they are not painted, are neutral. This includes deep reds, greens, yellows, golds and purple (amethyst). I did my kitchen in dark cherry stain and peacock green granite, which has bursts of green, gold and black. The knobs and pulls are ORB. The nearby family room has dark brown leather sofas, dark cherry wall unit and matching tables. BUT... there are large bright green throw pillows, a huge multi-colored abstract painting on the wall with burgundy, green, gold, black and silver, and there are sage green curtains. Lots of color, yet it's all neutral, expecially the big ticket items. I can change the color scheme by changing the wall hangings, pillows and curtains. Also, the furniture and cabinets are traditional style, yet the wall coverings, pillows and lamps are contemporary-and it all works beautifully! Start thinking "out-of-the-box" and don't be afraid of color. Just be careful when considering pastels, like pinks, blues and oranges, which aren't necessarily neutral

I take it this means the black with stainless idea is out? ;) Just to push you a little further over the edge - there is some amazing aluminum (I thought it was stainless) at Daltile - Mythos Brushed Aluminum tile. There are bars, and bricks, and 1x1 tiles, and some is brushed straight and some has curves (which could bring in your cabs)... it's awesome. Saw it at the little Daltile in Irvine (or is that Tustin? near the 55 just a few blocks N of MacArthur). I'm keeping it in mind for my kitchen BS when I get there as an accent with the glass subway. The thing that scares me about some of the stainless is that it will show scratches. Since this is brushed that's already done for you! :) I'm thinking that running a few bars of that around to break up the glass might just look pretty cool. =) Oh, say, did you hear any news from your saleslady today now that she is back? Or are you def off the fusion anyway? And, just another thought... there was some AMAZING black quartz that was actually kind of facing "your" fusion at Bedrosians. I asked Robert what it was and he said quartz but I don't remember what the name was other than that. It looked like it had diamonds sparkling in it. Gorgeous. Hang in there... it's only a kitchen... that you will have to live with for the next 20 years. :-) Not helping, am I?

I just looked up SW portobella and it looks way too dark. Here's a link to all the gold tones which, I personally think, would look stunning but the one is question is too dark.

I just think that the portobella looks "muddy" next to the blue...but, then again...I'm askin', so what do I know??? I need some other opinions! And thanks so much to the ideas so far...are ya'll thinking, gold? lighter? what??? ARRRGH! (picture pulling hair out...this is only a wedding the week after Thanksgiving and Christmas left to do..and I just lost my parents.....so why am I nuts again???)

Quick! Run out and buy the latest issue of Traditional Home magazine -- just in the door at my home. Guess what color a dining room has been painted on page 104? Yup -- peacock blue!

And the rest of the home is gorgeous with strong goly-yellow tones -- which are custom-mixed but might work for you!

Hope this helps! It is the Holiday 2008 issue with "Simple Joys" as the main title on the front.

I don't know if this will help - but this hgtv dream home's master bedroom was painted in portobella. If you go through the pictures you will get to one with the large window. Maybe the contrast of looking at the sky (not quite peacock blue) next to the portobella will help visualize your scheme?

Oh, my gosh...thank you SOOO much, teacats!! I'm so excited..and thank YOU, roguevalley, for that link..it DID help...a lot! Although these rooms have windows, that whole "north-facing" thing makes it dark..all the time! I can't wait to get Traditional Home! If the store wasn't closed right now, I'd go get it ASAP!! Maybe WalMart has it...will check! Will let you know! I knew where to go for answers! Happy Turkey Day, everyone!

Thanks again for all the responses...and hoyamom, I'm so sorry that I didin't tell you about the Gray Wisp (AKA Silver Sage)....I do like it a lot; however that room has almost zero natural light and the PO had the really 70's fluorescent lights behind wood around the ceiling (which I HATE). There is also a good bit of regular lighting, but those fluorescent bulbs are just a little overwhelming, and you really can't see a true color unless it's in there specifically...now, I have a gold sofa (rather large) and couple of slate blue/gold chairs, dark wood arms. Found a gorgeous rug locally that has a lot of red in it, and it's great with the wall color. Ironically, it's a good neutral, I think. I can see greens, eggplant, even orange with it...it doesn't seem to fight with anything really. So, guess I took a long time to say I like it!

If the room gets (as you say) no natural light, Portabello might be too dark for your foyer.

I love it in bedrooms where you sleep, but in a foyer? Hmmmm....

Thanks for the reassurance that gray wisp is a wonderful color The paint is going up on Sunday. I am using Aura so hopefully the painter will be able to work with it.

Please post pics of your blue and portabello when you are finished. Lovely colors.

I love gold with peacock blue and was going to say when I read this, "gold, gold, gold" and then I opened up your post and you had asked about gold. Yes, they are the best together.
