The table is indeed beautiful and seems to go perfectly with the chairs. What I could see of the rest of your home is also gorgeous. The only thing I would add (and that's just me) are a few area rugs to provide warmth and color to accent your beautiful wood floors.

Thank you everyone. It is so exciting to see a table there instead of the four chairs and the "imaginary" table. The funny thing is that when we had people over, they would sit in the chairs with a plate on their lap, even though we have a lot of other seating in the house with tables! I think the table will be greatly appreciated by visitors as well as our family.

Ingrid, You aren't the first one to comment on the possibility of rugs being a good addition to our home. I do intend to do that eventually, but I'm procrastinating for a couple reasons. 1. We have two boys and two dogs and if I'm not wiping something off the hardwood floors every 5 minutes, then the day just isn't complete. I cringe to think of all the "stuff" on nice rugs. 2. We live on a lake and there is a constantly sand on our floors. Again, I cringe to think of not being able to sweep it up. 3. I've found a couple of rugs I like, and suprise, suprise, they are PRICEY! So, it will happen, but I have to save my pennies and I'm trying not to rush into anything. I know the the living area is a place that could definitely benefit from a area rug. Would you suggest other areas? Under the table (remember the kids!) ;-)

The table is lovely and a perfect match to your chairs and Mission style decor. While I agree a rug would look nice under the table, I know that with kids it is bound to get dirty with daily use. I have three kids and don't use a rug under the kitchen table for that same reason, though I do have one in the formal DR, FR, and LR. I clean the floor often enough to know how dirty it would get. It would be nice to add some textile interest to break up the all wood look in your dining nook though--either with some valances and/or a table runner.

Regarding the sand, though, it is one reason to consider some type of floor rugs as sand will scratch up your floors. Perhaps have a no-shoes rule inside the house and put some shoe racks near the doors plus door mats/rugs.

valinsv, A table runner or some sort of a fabric centerpiece is a great idea. I've seen some beautiful vintage arts and crafts runners on eBay at times. I'll have to go an look today.

As far as "rules" to contain the sand go, we do have them, but that sand still has an amazing way of infiltrating the house. We have an outdoor shower for rinsing off, shoe racks (and flip flops to change into) at all the doors, beach towels in baskets and rugs to wipe your feet off on. When the kids come in for the evening, they go straight to their shower for a second rinse, but the sand on a 5 and 3 year old end up getting everywhere. We entertain quite a bit and when we have company, we are pretty laid back. We built this house to be lived in and I really enjoy it most when it is full of family and friends, so a little sand never bothers me. When we have nice weather, I do sweep every other morning or so and the floors get a thorough cleaning every other Friday. I don't want to baby the floors, but I do what to take care of them.

I love your table- all the wood in your home blends beautifully with your table and chairs. I agree that rugs will add warmth to your room and save the floor from scratches. I hope you enjoy your first meal at your new table!

I love that arts and crafts rug as well...I have a wool rug in my kitchen and we are both messy cooks and have a hound dog. I find the wool rugs are very forgiven as far as stains and dirt.
If that rug is wool, I would get it. If it's too pricey, then look in home goods for a rug that is more reasonable. This way you don't have to worry about being too fussy about spills with the kids.
You have made some beautiful choices in your home.

Thank you all. We just finished our first dinner in our kitchen (versus our dining room) and it was so nice. I think it is so interesting how the furnishings you put in your home can affect the dynamic of how you live there. I've been so focused on building the house for the last 2 odd years, that I assumed I was "done", but every time I move something around or add something, like this table, it seems to affect the mood and livability of the home. The addition of this table was a major improvement in the feel of the house and I'm so happy to finally have it.

I've waxed philosophical enough... I'm off to do the dishes. It is yet to be seen if the tables looks as nice from the sink as it did while seated at it! ;-)

teddas, Yes. The floor is also QS Oak, but we didn't put any stain in it. The tigering in it looks different because of this, but I also love it. The flecks "glow" in the sun.

jaymielo, Every time I look at this thread it reminds me of my own kitchen table. I had the opposite problem, I bought an antique table and had to find chairs that would work with it. I've had mine many years now though. We really enjoy the rectangle and size. Mine is 36 x 45 with 2 18" leaves that pull out from the ends so it's very very close to the size of yours. I meant to tell you when I first responded how much I love those chairs of yours too. By the way, I've never done a rug under mine, I can't imagine trying to keep it clean. If you decide to do it though, I do like the one you posted a lot!

I was recently over on the Home Building forum and looked back at some of the monthly photos in the past. It wasn't very long ago that you had posted your first pics of the new kitchen cabinet arrival....The waiting really wasn't that bad was it? It is all so worth the headaches. We still have a lot to do, but I have the kitchen and the MA Bdrm 98% done so now I can be more patient.

I enjoy seeing your posts, even though we don't have the same style I like yours a lot.

mimi_2006, What a beautiful table! I love the legs. If I could have found one that wasn't round, I would have gone that way, but almost everything I found in antique shops in the year or so that I was looking was the round table, usually with the claw feet, and the other thing was that the leaves were normal, versus quartersawn, oak. The antique salesman told me that was because the table was usually covered with a tablecloth when pulled out, but I can't imagine covering beautiful wood, so that was a sticking point for me. I love how your leaves pull out of the ends. I looked at several tables like that (I can't remember what that is called) and REALLY like the style. You found very nice chairs to match the table. I think they work great in your space. If I do decide to buy that rug, I'll probably use it in the attached living room instead of under the table. I just can't imagine spaghetti and such on the rug for the next few years at least. The dogs are good cleaner uppers, but still... :)

flowerchild, You are right. It wasn't that long ago, mid July if I remember correctly, because we hoped to have them around the 4th and they were finished about a week after that. The waiting, in retrospect, wasn't that bad, but at the time, with the GC and DH breathing down my neck, it was pretty tense. But, definitely worth all the headaches and anxiety. We might not have the same style (although we do have the same front door) ;-) but I love seeing your posts also. Your home is beautiful and I love you master bedroom. The bed is beautiful and to have a fireplace in the room and the great "bones", to die for.

thanks jaymielo, our tables really do remind me of each other. The style with the pull out leaf is called a pub table. My leaves are oak finished just like the table top. I wouldn't want one that wasn't the same as the table either, that's odd. Be sure and show us the rug in your space, it looks like it'll go great and add some nice color/texture.
