Kitchen Remodel w/o Total Reno Help

Ok, i'm buying my first home, and the kitchen is already in good shape w/ painted cabinets (altough their decorating ideas are terrible)

But i want to update w/o having to gut and buy a bunch of new stuff.

This is what i was thinking: Use the cabinet above fridge and put it over stove, get a new SS stove w/ overhead Micro, paint all cabinets white, w/ new brushed nickel hardware, new faucet, and light above sink, Paint the ugly yellow to a nice neutral color, maybe w/ a hint of blue in it. Get a new countertop, floor, and eventually SS the other appliances, oh and a new light fixture.

this is the only pic i have at the moment because we havent actually moved in yet. do you think the kitchen will look way nicer/bigger after these updates, im also considering some crown molding. Any other ideas? I feel like this could all be done for $5k or less, Including 3k for appliances.

The cabinet over the refrigerator is probably 36" wide, whereas the one above the range is probably 30" wide.

Paint definitely. Add a nice countertop and backsplash. Get rid of that boxed light fixture and put in a different fixture or do recessed lights.

If it was me, I'd also be tempted to rip out that soffit, unless it is hiding something. It rather dominates the room.

I too couldn't help but notice the soffit, that appears to be 24" deep. Yikes. You can trim that down to 12" but it's a lot of work and very dirty, dusty work at that.

You don't need to move the cab over the fridge, you need to enclose the fridge with plywood on either side, and then pull the cab forward to be flush with the wood and the front of the fridge. You can do this for the price of plywood.

Also, an over-the-range microhood is no way to "update" a space. If the hood you have now vents to outside, it is a better choice regardless of its appearance, so I've saved you $$ there.

Leave the counters alone. If you upgrade them beyond the builder-grade cabinetry, it will look odd. Besides, they appear to be in decent shape.

I think your budget of 2K for new counters, floors, hardware, lighting and faucet is unrealistic unless you are able to do the installation yourself.

All of this strikes me as a little premature. Perhaps you could paint the walls and cabs, definitely change the light box, and live with the layout for a year or two, all the while saving up to do a proper reno. By that I don't mean a horribly expensive reno, but one that improves form and function. Any changes you make now will improve the look of the space a little, but there's no point making cosmetic changes until you know how the space works for you.

Wolf DF304 ~$6k Wolf steam oven ~$3.8k Bosch 500-800 DW $800-$1500 depending on specific model. SZ 36" ~$9k Zephyr ~ $600-$1200 A few of the Veteran posters here on GW have stated that Wolf has not fixed it's blue enamel problem and do not recommend their ovens. Wekick has had problems with three ovens/ranges but his last problem was with a range that was 4.5 years old .AFAIK Wolf fixed this at least 3 years ago but FYI. In any event I think the Wolf is way overpriced for what you get. I don't like getting a suite of appliances for a promo discount you can almost always do better buying separate appliances. I would get a specific price quote with specific appliances then we(the collective we at GW) can maker a counter recommendation. Because the appliances listed sound way way more than $12k.

Hi florantha, I know exactly what you mean by lots of space but no space! That exactly describes my home. In fact, I don't really have a space for a desk right now because of that. I wish I had my computer so I could upload some pictures (I'm using my iPad right now), but I will just have to use words to describe my space for now: When you walk into my house, you walk right into my kitchen, which is 13ft x 12ft. So if you think of a square, the front door is on the bottom side at the far right. The right side is a wall, along which is the recessed pantry, and this wall stops at the end of the 12ft. There is a walkway in front of you, and the rest of the bottom side (to the left of the door) has the fridge and a short counter. The left-hand wall has that counter continuing from the corner, then a sink under a window, then a counter over the dishwasher, and then a wall oven with microwave and short cabinets over it. There is no fourth wall ahead of you - the tile just transitions to wood floor and there is a wood beam overhead to divide the rooms. So if you walk to the end of the tile, you are in the left half of a rectangular room, and our dining set is in the same room at your right. So, the dining room is a 15ft 7" by 24ft rectangle, and my current kitchen is like a square under the long left side of that rectangle. The dining set fits into the right-hand 12ft stretch of dining room, and the left-hand side (that my current kitchen opens onto) is useless empty space right now. So I'm pushing my kitchen straight backwards into that space, and my current kitchen will be the mudroom/entry. That was probably clear as mud, but it's the best I can do for now, sorry! The place where my wall oven and microwave are, will house a tall cabinet which will contain the stacked washer/dryer. The sink und the window will be replaced with a utility sink and keep the short counters at either side - I'm hoping to make that all soapstone. So the will be both top and bottom cabinets at either side of the sink (and under it), and I was thinking of having those cabinets and the tall one housing the W/D similar to the kitchen cabinets. The fridge and short counter, to the left of the front door, will be replaced by the coat stand. So that's where I'm agonizing over having the different stains. They would be right up again each other in that corner... Would it look terrible if they were different, as I described in my post above? I'll be putting in a long countertop between the two rooms to separate the mudroom from the kitchen, leaving a 4th walkway from the door straight to the kitchen, and adding an open shelf right under the ceiling beam as well, to separate the spaces. I figure that can be a handy folding area as necessary, or we can use the dining room table. I don't sort, really, and my pantry is big (7th x 2.5th) so if need be, I can shove the hamper in there out of sight when company comes. Hampers stay in rooms/closets until I do laundry, so I don't think it will be a big deal? And the ironing board can go in the pantry too, with one if those wall retainers which holds the iron up above. I never hang clothes and I suppose I could always use the coat hooks and a hnagerrs for rare occasions, too? Does this all make sense or have I created mass confusion by now?

Nothing but drawers and more drawers CP! Just trying to decide if I want a few with 4 stacks as well. I went with all 3 stacks. I figured it kept the lines more regular but also I figured if I needed more space, I could always get the drawer itself divided with a sliding tray thingy. Of course YMMV. One thing I try to achieve when laying out a kitchen is to be able to remove the clean dishes from the dishwasher and put them away without taking a step. It is not always achievable, but the closer the layout comes to that the better it is, at least in the dishes part of the design. And her updated design will do exactly that! I have that in my kitchen too and love it. DW on one side of cleanup sink and drawers for silverware and dishes on the other side of sink. It's jut a question of turning around. Glasses are a different thing. They are stored above the prep sink nearer the fridge. Mark brings up a good point. Now with this design, figure out where every single thing will go in your kitchen. Label what will go in each drawer. Yes you may decide to change a few things once it's all done, but overall think of what goes where and where it will be most convenient.

These are all very good thoughts! I’ve been looking on Facebook Market and Craigslist for used vanities or floor sample sale items, and I’ll continue to do that. We’ve been by a couple of warehouses that have items from demolition, but nothing has quite worked yet. Habitat for Humanity May be a good place to look though - we haven’t been there! For removing the shower door, I didn’t think of that for a full shower. Can that be done? I figured doors were necessary, and my husband didn’t like the idea of just covering the doors with a shower curtain. Getting rid of it could be good.. I think changing out the mirror, light and paint could be the first step to take sooner than later. Complication to white is that this tile is cream colored. See this pic to see the difference... still neutral at least! I think I can move forward with navy and gold accents, right?

You might also consider getting a couple glass cabinet doors to lighten things up, perhaps flanking the sink?

I would get a counter depth refrigerator and a more subtle lighting fixture! lol

The soffit won't be nearly as noticeable if it's not bright yellow and is close to the cabinet color. I would think it's functional but maybe not; it does seem to run only where the cabinetry is. You could remove it and add some crown molding to the top of the cabinetry for a more finished look.

I like the cabinets...wouldn't paint. Especially leave the base set up alone.I think the extra deep soffit is challenging...but longterm may be something you want to remove. So are the upper cabs going to work then?....you can plan how you would manage the wall layout with those painted white for instance...maybe adding glass upper cabs to take it higher....more molding....or just get new uppers. I would want a new French door/ bottom freezer drawerfridge-treat yourself-wait on all the other things a bit except for painting the yellow .....and even without a whole lighting redo,replace the boxy ceiling fixture with one that sits more flush for now..... Can't tell what the counters are, but they look fresh, and the sink looks better than average for a drop in-get a new faucet along with fridge.

So new plan is to buy a new fridge that isnt as wide, keep the color of the cabinets but buy new hardware, get a new faucet, light fixture and PAINT

to the right of the fridge is the pantry, any ideas what to do w/ microwave if i keep current set up for more counter space?
