Break this rule at my peril? Inset cabs, very small kitchen

I've been told by design professionals, and others, that frameless cabinetry is the way to go in a very small kitchen because you end up with more storage room that way. And I'm sure it's true. But how true? Is it really enough space savings to make a noticeable difference? Couldn't I just purge more years of collected kitchen junk to make up the difference? :-)

I ask because I suddenly realized today that my fixation with the traditional off-white kitchen, while fueled no doubt by the lovelies seen here and in shelter mags, is perhaps driven by cabinet *style* as much as color and finish. In other words, I'm drawn to the off-white kitchens with inset cabinetry and I'm not sure the effect would be the same with frameless cabs. And yes, the overall kitchen space is miniscule.

So has anyone done this? Inset cabs in a small kitchen? Feel free to talk me out of this notion, as getting what I think are awesome ideas and then discarding them seems to be my MO on this remodel plan.
