CD/DVD Storage...

Where does everyone store their movies and music? My TV is sitting on an open console table with the components and I do have some movies sitting on the shelves, but I really don't like looking at them (I don't like clutter!). The rest of the movies are in a swivel thing that sets on the floor that's also unattractive. I'm only finding a few cabinets that are attractive, but the price tag is around $200+ for something that will hold more than 100 movies. Any suggestions?

I purchased a CD case (tall and narrow, made out of wood) from Ikea. It's really nice, but you do see the DVDs. I like the fact that it is very narrow so you don't notice it as much. I don't think I paid over $75.00 for it. If you don't have Ikea by you I believe they have a catalog that you can order from. If you really don't like to look at them you should purchase a closed cabinet. Ikea also has those.

I love my new cd/dvd storage. I have them in albums that look just like leather photo albums, but instead of photo slots, they have cd slots. I got some at the Container Store, and I forget where I got the others. So for all of my cd's, I have about 4 of these albums on a bookshelf. All our DVD's are in 2 albums that are on a shelf under the TV. Looks MUCH nicer than all those plastic boxes!

Have tried the ultra-slim jewel cases (for CDs)? They open easily so might not be as prone to breakage. They take up very little space. You do have to see the front to identify the title, no room on the spine for a label. You can buy these at Staples, they have them in their brand. Steve

I saw on HGTV where they took a set of the small indoor window type shutters, re-screwed them so they formed a box, added a bottom and had a CD storage cabinet. I think it was acutally on the show called Trash to Treasure. It even had a knob on it already as they used the knob used to hook the shutters closed. Alice

For CD's you can actually rip them and store them on a network attached storage device. That'll save you a bunch of space. I ripped over 600 CDs a few years ago and saved them on our NAS device. Then you can stream the music from that storage device. We use Sonos speakers, and stream our music library from there. Another plus of ripping/saving is that I downloaded hundreds of the CDs to my ipod mini for running. We did save the actual CDs and the cover art, but they are in a box in a storage area. Regarding DVDs, we had some drawers built underneath the TV area, and they are in those drawers. I want to rip the DVDs too, but haven't figured out how to do it yet. And I don't know if they will play on our TV from the NAS device, or if there's an external drive I can plug into my TV to play them. It's on my to-do list. Most people don't buy CDs and DVDs anymore because of streaming. But I didn't want to throw them away. I also find it curious how vinyl has gotten so popular lately. My 16 year old and 23 year old are getting so into vinyl records! Like a backlash to streaming.

Have you checked at Lowe's? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Herringbone-7-13-in-W-x-5-5-in-H-x-10-69-in-D-Gray-Fabric-Bin/1000146043 I don't know what size you want but they do have several. I can vouch for the ones in the link as I bought that brand/size and they are very sturdy. They do have other sizes as well. Amazon also has Allen & Roth fabric covered bins which are exactly the same style as the ones at Lowe's. Good luck!

Sue, I like that idea! I have the kids' movies that way. I don't know why I hadn't thought about doing ours the same! Do you find that you miss the covers? I guess I could store them in a box, so if I did want to see more about the movie, I'd have it stored where I could get it.

Sue, I just found a case that will also allow for the DVD covers! I've ordered 2 and they had great reviews, too. I can't wait to get them. I am so ready to get rid of all the "clutter" of those DVD cases.

Robbi - where did you find your DVD covers? Do you mind sharing your details? I, too, deal with tons of CDs and DVDs and feel like I am missing out on something by chucking the plastic cases and just keeping the DVD and inserts....
