You will need a liner, especially if the water will hit it (depends on where the shower head is in relation to the door location). A few fabrics will repel the water, but some curtains are purely decorative. Liners are cheap and will make your curtain last longer.

I suggest that you measure the height of your shower opening. Finding a curtain long enough could be an issue (hope not!). Have fun shopping!

Use a liner. A cloth curtain will get soaked and build up soap scum and mineral deposits. The cloth curtain should hang outside of the tub, with the liner hanging inside so that water hitting it flows back into the tub and down the drain and not onto the floor.

My shower in my master bedroom also has no door, I used 2 shower sized tension rods, the outter one has a decorative curtain sheer and the inner rod, positioned just slightly lower has a liner. even though my shower head which is like a rain from above type, does NOT hit the outside, since I'm in there splashing around, I get water outside of the shower! so it's really necessary.

I wanted to make curtains with fabric I had picked up but it seemed like I never got around to it, so I found these 2 panels at TJ Maxx on clearance for $3 each! done, simple, works for me.

Just wondering...has anyone ever taken down their shower doors to put up a curtain and then regretted that decision? My bathroom is lovely but my doors and grime UNDERNEATH the caulking. The caulking needs to come out and be redone. I'm contemplating just taking the doors out all together and hanging a curtain, but I fear water will be all over the bathroom.

Aha. That makes sense. Upon further investigation there are also decorative vinyl curtains, which might be the way to go... 2 birds with one stone kind of thing.

Joanie, I have also thought about removing our track doors because they can get quite gross. I am tall so I didn't notice that I had MOLD growing on the top of the glass underneath the track. We have a housekeeper and she is tall too, and I guess never saw it. Yuck! I had to clean it with bleach soaked q-tips because it is so hard to get to. I don't think there is a perfect solution, except maybe a walk in shower with no doors :-)

If you use a fabric curtain from the the Hotel line at BB&B you do NOT need an additional vinyl liner. That's the whole idea of the curtain. I have one and absolutely love it! It gets a bit wet, but water does not go through it. I leave it pulled out to dry for a short while and then just push it back. Every now and then take it down and wash it. Vinyl liners always end up yucky and I just couldn't handle that.

We've used just fabric shower curtains in my daughters' bathroom through the years. They both take daily showers ever since they were little. I love it. It contains the water but does allow for the tub/shower area to dry out better.

It seems like every time we visit my father-in-law's, I have to take down his vinyl liner and wash it with bleach to get rid of all the mildew. I only wash the girls' curtain if I'm changing the curtain for a different seasonal one. We never have mildew/mold on it.

joanie, I wouldn't hesitate to take down the sliding doors. I had those in my previous house and hated them. Our currant house doesn't and I use shower curtains and like that so much better!

One of my baths has a curtain and I bought the Mildew-resistant heavy weight vinyl shower curtain, like this one. Mine is a bit different tho. That one I linked to says suction cups are on the bottom. Mine has the weights sewn in the bottom hem and suction cups (very small, but they work) line each edge at the side, to grasp the wall. (It's such a nice heavy weight tho, I don't even use those, no water in the room.) It's a nice substantial thickness, not flimsy.

The mildew resistant ones really do work, no mildew problems ever. Repel water nicely, too. When I clean the bathroom I just wipe it down with some cleaner on a cloth, rinse and that's it. Got mine at LNT, but pretty sure it was the "Hotel" brand.

I removed the sliding glass doors from our walk-in shower. There was a thread describing how, but I can't find it. As I recall, I took one door out by lifting and bringing it forward at the bottom. the other door wouldn't come out, so I worked around it. I think the top frame came off first, then the side , then bottom. Don't remember how I kept that one door from flopping out ;-( Unscrewed the side frames and had to nudge the frames out with a flat head screwdriver as they were siliconed in. Finally got the bottom out, with the door.

Cleanup was remarkably easy. I used a paint scraper (razor blade type) to get the silicone off, and worked on the bottom crud a little each day. One day it was gone. Poof.

I bought a heavy duty shower curtain at WM and have fabric over it. Love it - hated the doors.

BTW - to clean plastic shower curtains is easy in a top-loading washing machine:

Put shower curtain and 2 large bathtowels in the machine with 1/2 cup each of detergent and baking soda. Run through entire wash cycle. Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water. Don't spin or wash vinegar out. Hang immediately. Wrinkles will disappear after the curtain has thoroughly dried.

This won't work with a front loader...sorry.

Thank you so much for your help. I took out the shower doors in my kid's bath but they were on top of the tub. This shower is longer - with a bath seat, but not wide. That's why I thought I would end up with water on the floor. So glad everyone chimed in and said to go for it. I will start with taking out the doors and putting up a shower curtain on a tension shower rod, then I will go to town with a couple of showers. If there is not water, I'll rip out the framing. The holes that the frame leave behind are unsightly. In my other bath, I just filled them with caulking. Is that what everyone else does?

You don't have to use vinyl shower curtain liners (which offgas some really nasty stuff, BTW)... nylon liners are MUCH nicer to use. WM and Target have nylon liners for under $10. It's like windbreaker fabric. I can point the showerhead directly at the fabric and while the fabric itself gets wet, nothing comes through.

Just make sure your curtain is long enough (or you put your rod low enough) to tuck behind the shower curb.

Sadly, my favorite shower curtain is no longer made, the Watershed - all cotton but lighter than the cotton duck ones they sell at Vermont Country Store (which are also excellent, but can be a bit hard to manage because the fabric is so thick - although if you have a drafty bathroom where shower curtains tend to billow and flap during showers, those are your answer). DH tore ours pretty much past repairing a few months back so I had to find an alternative.
