Okay I give. If I could move or remove ONE window....

I am really wanting to make the best choices here. Working around my windows is making this project very difficult. My windows often come up on here as problems and I agree. If moving or removing a window could make my kitchen function properly, I am ready to consider it. The siding is older white vinyl which we can get a close match, but not exact.

If I were to pick which window we mess with, it would be the one on the bottom wall of the drawings - only because it is on the back side of the house. The other one is on the most visible side of the house.

Also, we have to keep one as-is so my workers (dad, husband & brothers) can only complain half as much behind my back.

Here's the best, but far from perfect layout. Windows are in red, and the open doorway is yellow. The box to the left of the doorway is a chimney. We really want the peninsula with seating - this is probably our #1 priority. The dining room is the empty area on the far left.. the stools show the farthest into the dining room that we can go. The dining room side of the chimney is off limits because of the built in bookcase that separates the living room and dining room.

All right. I think I like this. The old sink window stays put. The other window gets moved right next to the old one - (I did this in my bathroom and love it!! )

Fridge - since this is an interior wall - I can recess no problem. Even better... this particular wall is about 7.5 inches deep because it houses a big pipe - I assume sewer pipe? and that is very close to the corner where it meets the exterior wall. I can gain these two inches behind the fridge PLUS .5 inches minimum when swapping plaster for drywall... and then can recess the fridge a few inches into the wall. My fridge is 31" deep without the handle (32" with the required back clearance) - so I can get this fairly close to flush with the front of the pantry. The way the hinges are, I can have the door flush with cabinets. The doors can swing open fully without crashing into anything and the close corner on the U ends up being a very close set down space.

Pantry - I have up to 36 inches here. I was thinking of having 2 15" pullouts and a 5 inch broom pullout against the wall... Each of these could be pulled out all the way without crashing into the dishwasher cabinet.. and since they are accessed from the side anyway, the small area in front may not be a problem since we wouldnt really stand there anyway, other than to reach in for the broom. I have about 25" of clearance to pull them out and could possibly gain 2 or 3 more if I can take a few inches off the back of one or two of them (that pipe) Do I need drywall behind a floor to ceiling cabinet with a solid wood back? Right now I am really leaning toward Ikea boxes with custom fronts for the base and pantry cabinets. - I read that 2-3 inches of the back of these are empty space anyway.

Dishwasher on the end - would be out of the way other than if someone needed access to pantry or fridge. I really dont think this would be a big problem - we dont usually load or unload while someone is cooking. Sink is centered with the two windows.

Range is centered with set down space on both sides
Peninsula is now prep area - which wasnt my first choice but could be nice. Would prep sink go on end or in corner?

I see very separate zones - with them flowing nicely ... prep to cook, to cleanup...

cons - Set down space for fridge and pantry is not near the prep area.
Dish storage is not above dishwasher.
Peninsula becomes main prep area. would need a prep sink. Would not work well to have lower counter height on peninsula.

Just had another idea.. but here are these pics for now!

Thanks, Jenn! I got your comments there, but I will continue posting here for now. Thank you for posting Patricia's Crepuscule (sp?) rose, that is DEFINATELY an inspiration pic! I'm going to think over your comments about evergreens...some tend to get pretty big here, since they seem to frequently like the cold. But winter interest would be nice, I agree. I also like the idea of the curved bed under the window. That little house at the back you noted is the cellar bulkhead. The area in the right of that pic will soon be level all the way across, as that is where the kitchen will expand to. I could make a big kidney shape, curving away from the house, back in towards the center, and then out again along the bulkhead. Was that what you were thinking, or more of an arc from corner to corner, like a pie wedge?

Try this: Create a folder on the H/D and name it as you wish. Mine is called Stand By. Place your CD in the drive, most likely d:/ and open Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer click on the numeric serial number of the CD in its drive. The contents of the CD will appear in the large right window. In the small left window click on the + in front of the C:/ drive. This will open the system tree showing the folders of the drive. Locate the target picture in the large right window, and drag and drop it to the file you newly created. From there you can do anything you want with it, and the original will remain on the CD. DA

Thank you all for trying. I am including a picture. The idea is for the plants to sit on the stones in the trough by the window. The depth from the edge of the counter to the trough is 42". The trough is about 11". The stones will be approximately the same level as the counter so I will try to slide the pots from one to the other. The counter is so deep we use a remote control to open the windows. I have a grabber or two but they don't open large enough for or handle the weight of the pots. I can climb on the counter but I want a better solution than that. I'm thinking of using a flat shallow or edgeless pan with cork on the bottom (to protect the counter) so I can use a pizza peel to slide the herb pots onto the pan and then pull the pan towards me. While this may work, it is certainly less than ideal which is why I'm reaching out to the creative minds here for ideas.

You could get lucky, but not likely! I had 2 extra Marvin windows and just told my builder to take them when he cleaned stuff up after we moved in in January! Marvin sent us 2 casements that opened in the wrong direction. The replacements took 5 months and I gave up at month 4 and just told the builder to keep the project moving with the wrong windows. No one else will notice. When the replacements arrived we had already completed stucco outside and trim inside, so I had no use for them. Mine were push out casement with retractable screens, Bronze outside and primed white inside, so they wouldn't have matched your project in any case.
