i guess the pork loin we had along with heart-shaped hamburgers on the grill...it was ds1's rehersal dinner...they wanted something informal, so it was our backyard...

and after all that hard work of getting it done, noone except the immeadiate family saw the kitchen! all the guests just walked straight into the yard...

Our first meal was Thanksgiving dinner 2010. The kitchen wasn't exactly done but I had been telling everyone working on the kitchen that I'd better be able to make dinner, since the first of October. Only the cabinet boxes and wall oven cabinet were done but the counter was put in the week before and all the appliances were able to be installed the day before Thanksgiving. I was ready!
The last details of the cabinets were finished in mid January.

Stir fry! We were so excited to get to try the power of the gas rangetop after years of steaming our 'stir fry' on electric, and in batches that had to wait, or be eaten in shifts.

I think we made fettuccine alfredo--but it was cooked on the Jade range we originally had installed (which was replaced with a Wolf range).

The first thing I made was chicken stock. And rendered fat.

The first proper meal was Seder. :)

Cookies. The oven went in first!

Pasta. pathetic but true. The really good stuff had to ramp up for later. We are finding there has yet to be a 'start'-time; it's a long slow trickle to on, and we haven't even really gotten there yet.

Made from scratch.

Our kitchen is not completed yet but the cabinets, countertop and appliances are in. The first meal I made was Pasta Vigo which is an herbed white cream sauce with shrimp and tomatos. Though the meal was delicious I didn't enjoy the cooking as much as I thought since I'm a clean freak and was worried about getting my new range dirty.

Ooooooh, such a delicious thought!! I wonder when that will be for me. I think I forgot how to cook. The current rental has 50's era electric cooktop. The knobs have been replaced incorrectly so low is high and high is low. The wall oven burns everything.......

Wow plllog, a seder, that is ambitious, except for the salt water!

I too am thinking of my first meal to cook-- kitchen is suppose to be done next week. I am thinking maybe lasagna or beef roast and brownies. I am so sick of grilling and potato/pasta salad since that is what we have been eating for 3 months! Last night I even grilled whole clams-- since I had tried most everything else. Not bad I must admit, but I will be happy when I can turn on my oven--even if it will be in August!

Actually, Raro, it was a blessing. :) I didn't have Ricsfan's problem. I didn't have time. I was scrambling to find the dishes, to unpack enough kitchen stuff that there was room in the living room for the company, etc., and cooking furiously. I had to use E-Z-Foil for the turkey, which was very juicy and made a shambles of the oven. And the floor, and the island. I sometimes joke to people who are worried about messing up their kitchens that they should have a troop of Junior girl scouts in to do their baking badges. After that's cleaned up, the intimidation is gone. Seder was like that for me. It also required use of every single one of my new appliances. :) Best way ever to demonstrate that it was all worth it. :)

I've been living with a small two burner electric cooktop and a toaster oven for too long. I can't wait to get to use our new gas cooktop and double oven! When we move in, I think I'll take my toaster oven out back and shoot it. ;-)

I understand being a little nervous about messing up the new kitchen. But, I guess I'm going to have to 'rip the bandaid off' and just start cooking in it when it is finished.
