Different crown moulding profiles

Hi All,

We are almost done with our kitchen remodel.

We have crown molding above the cabinets. The molding is the same finish as the cabinets. I would like to add additional crown molding to the other walls in the kitchen.

I think I have 2 options. I can continue around the room with the exact same molding or with a different profile and finish. If I use the same crown molding, I feel as if the other trim work in the room (base, door trim, and chair rail) would need to have the same finish. The finish is white with a charcoal glaze. (Wood Mode Vintage White) If I go with a different profile and finish, I can paint the new molding the same color as the other trim work in the room. I would leave a space of about 5 inches between the different profiles to show that there is a difference or I could use some kind of blocks where the 2 different profiles meet.

Has anyone done this? Have pictures? I could not figure out how to upload a picture of our kitchen.

We used the same crown profile above the cabinets as in the rest of the kitchen & keeping room. Same off-white color too. The cabinets are painted with a slightly different formula, but basically the same color.

How much of a color difference between the existing crown and your cabinet finish?

I meant existing trim.

"It's not usually done unless it's a kludge to try to hide a mistake." Then I won't do it....Will call on Tuesday and have the 24" changed to a 18" so Crown will all be same size. But won't that still make the height of the cabinets different from the others? Surrounding cabinet on either side is 30" then there is a 36" corner cabinet next to that. These were not Custom made and they only come in standard depth. Here is a picture of the same cabinets (different color) I will be getting but will be using different molding. These were done by someone at the cabinet place where I'm getting mine from. He sent me this picture and said he does the crown molding on these cabinets all the time. I am hoping this will all work out for the best....right now I am worried!

I have different crown molding profiles & sizes throughout my house. Any rooms that have continuous walls have the same crown molding. We have a 2 story foyer & living room w/ a large crown molding. My DR has a different size & profile. The kitchen & family room have a third size & profile. First floor master bedroom has a fourth as it has a tray (ed) ceiling. 6" could be a bit big for 8ft ceilings. I think it would depend on the profile.

"Well, it's not really crown, but more like a flat board to fill the gap, and a strip of cove molding along the top to make up for the uneven ceilings." This statement heads me in a different direction. There's a joint between the two cabinets now. If you are basically putting in flat fill pieces (as you would do in a modern kitchen) I would put in two pieces of wood, with the joint lined up with the cabinets, and paint each the color of the cabinet below. Since this is usually done in a modern kitchen that's the example I found and you can see below they extended the color of the cabinet below up to the ceiling. I realize you don't have a modern kitchen -- but you are proposing a modern style fill strip for the gap so here ya go:

You use the kitchen crown around the whole room. Or you use the room crown on the cabinets. No cheesy plinth blocks and 2 different crowns.

The color of the trim is currently BM Navajo White. I tired unsuccessfully to match the finish on the cabinets/crown.

Well, our kitchen cabinets are being made as we speak so I'm talking about what's on paper .... However, our house at present has no crown moulding, so the crown which will be installed throughout the house will also be installed in the kitchen. (I know, not helpful so far.)

The kitchen is going to be a fairly bright white -- I mean, the kitchen cabinets and wainscoting. The trim in the rest of the house is almost a pale yellow -- it's a deep, deep cream (Benjamin Moore Calming Cream). We'll have all the kitchen crown and other trim (windowsill, baseboard, door casing) painted to match the fairly bright white. We'll have to have plinths where the kitchen meets the family room, though, as it will be in the Calming Cream and would just look plain goofy (I think) to have white meet yellow.

Our colors are noticeably different. I'm having a hard time envisioning your two colors (the white with charcoal glaze and Navajo White) and if they'd fight or if there's a subtle enough difference so that it would be okay to have both in the same room.

I like the idea of continuity, either whole-house continuity or room continuity. I think for a kitchen, which will have so much of the painted finish (cabinets, trim), I'd vote for the crown in your kitchen matching the color of your cabinetry (doing all in the white with charcoal glaze).

Sorry I don't have anything to show you nor can I give you more help ....

Do your cabinets go to the ceiling? It's hard to make a call without photos, but just looking at your cabinet color and BM trim online I think you could use both and don't see why you'd need to change the crown profile. That might just make things more obvious.
