Comments (4)Wood expands when it's humid because it absorbs moisture. It contracts when it's dry, because it loses that moisture. Movement from wood is 100% normal and to be expected seasonally. It perhaps may be magnfified in your case because the AC wasn't running when the work was done so there was more humidity around for the wood to absorb. Contact the contractor for a call back, but you have to be careful about making things too tight during the dry season. If you do that, you can get buckling and cupping when the humidity naturally rises come late spring into summer. You can also talk with a HVAC pro about installing a whole house humidifier. Most wood floor manufacturers and cabinet manufacturers require the home's humidity to be between 25-55% year round for their warranty to remain in force. That means using the AC in the summer as well, and being sure that it's not too oversized to handle the humidity....See MoreHow to handle crown on cabs to ceiling?
Comments (14)equest, I have DIY stacked molding--not crown molding, but I have an awkward corner that is exactly what you are asking about. It's exacerbated by the colors I chose for cabinets (a medium green) and trim (off-white). I love both colors, but couldn't couldn't find another solution to integrate them. In the context of the whole kitchen, I don't notice it, but I admit it's not ideal, and a picture may help you make a decision: The house was built in the late 1920s, and I tried to make the modest kitchen look as if it had been 'collected' through the decades. It had been gutted in the early 1980s--the PO had built some very sturdy cabinets, but the drawer glides were 'shedding' sawdust into the lower cabinets. I wish I had started with the cabinets you have! I'm looking forward to seeing your finished kitchen. Comments (11)ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks....See MoreHow do I match crown molding to kitchen cabinet crown? Comments (6)When we had our family rooms crown molding put up recently- our crown molding guy took a section of our existing kitchens crown molding with him in order to match. honestly my husband has the better eye when it comes to crown- but in my humble opinion-since your rooms connect- if possible- I’d stick with the same size crown moulding & crown mouldings color to keep the look more consistent & flow nicely....See Moresmm5525
