Just for fun...wallpaper

No projects planned at the moment, just in the dreaming stage. I'm wondering what you guys think of using wallpaper as a backsplash? My dining room has a large built in hutch. I think it would be fun to add some interest with wall paper. Or I could try to stencil. It would be the area between the uppers and counter top plus the area above the upper. Would that look too choppy?

I like that idea. It will give pattern and softness.

I've painted many backsplashes just like yours. Landscape scenes, patterns, whatever. An easier way to stencil would be to paint on canvas and install like wallpaper...easier on your back.
I don't know about above the uppers, but you have a nice space to be creative!

I love wallpaper and have it in most of the rooms in my house. Some of it has been there for decades and is still in excellent condition. Having said this, I have told my children that when they haul me out of here, dead or alive, to remove all the wallpaper before putting the house up for sale. People are terrified of removing wallpaper - think it will destroy the walls (if drywall and not properly primed, it might!), or will cost a fortune to remove. So I told them to only leave the wallpaper in two bathrooms - both are done in a Farrow & Ball strie paper and they make the two baths. As to wallpaper and using it in a bath or kitchen. One is no longer limited to "kitchen/bath vinyl wallpaper. I chose a gorgeous french documentary paper for my kitchen when we were moving here in 1984. I was worried about using it as a backsplash in my kitchen (which is what one did in those days), and a rep in the Brunschwig & Fils showroom in LA, told me to just send it to ResistFlame in Cincinnati. They would coat it with vinyl and I'd be good to go. I did this and have done it many times since. One has a choice of matte finish (my choice) or glossy, and it can be single/double/triple coated depending on the wear/tear one expects it to have to endure. I've always done single coating and that has been fine. It is totally wipeable/scrubable with a Dobie pad. The company is so easy to work with - I usually just have the paper drop-shipped directly to them. They coat the paper and then ship it to me. It's really quite reasonably priced.

@Jan Moyer, thanks for the etemology lesson! Closet size room: check. No window: check. Powder for my wig ... it’s here somewhere.... Re: the fan: do you have a preference on location (over the toilet?) and brand/size/capacity? I’m guessing I’ll need an overhead (canned) light, in addition to sconces. With the sun tube that ceiling may feel cluttered. Is that as issue? i already bought the sun tube and I like natural light. Should I still use it here (seems like a good idea to me) or move to that hallway or ? @J OBrien thanks for your comments. Since you‘ve lived with this size room, is there anything you did that was a great idea or that you wish you’d done differently? @Ephma thanks for sharing! I love your home and that powder and laundry room too.(yes get the wine fridge lol) Great wallpaper. How wide is your powder room and your sink? (I’m back to considering a 24“ vanity so I have some modicum of storage). Thanks for the suggestion on the board and batten. Last night I googled, for the first time, the diff styles of wainscoting. Many! Which do you think is less formal? I live in a beach town and want this room to feel fun.geez, just what I need, another decision! thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help!!!!

Be warned Spoonflower wallpaper isnt a straight match. You have to overlap it to get it to match. My wallpaper person , who has hung wallpaper for 34 years, told me he would never hang it again. His words were its cheap (&@*. Just throwing that out there before you go and fall in love with something which is easy to do on the site.

I think it could look nice--it will unify the whole elevation. (and you can cover the switchplates with wallpaper:) )

I just read in another thread that you can take regular fabric and apply with starch. Has anyone tried this with success?

I just did the interior of my built in china hutch with fabric. I'll try to post a pic this afternoon.

I think I'd do glass tiles on the backsplash and then paper the rest of that wall.
IMHO you need something with some sparkle in that center area and I don't think visually wallpaper can carry it off well enough to make the statement such a grand piece of furniture should.
That's a very large unit. It has aged appearance it needs a wee bit of sparkle. The piece that is based on would have had a mirrored center which tho nice takes away some of the magic because you can see the backs of appliances and such. Tile would clean better and give it sparkle without taking away the magic.

A long time ago, in another house, I managed to find a wallpaper border that was almost the exact width of my kitchen backsplash. We couldn't afford tile at the time, so I used the border and it looked really great. It was a border with vases of flowers running along the length of it, so it really made sense in terms of placement. Not all borders would work that way, but take a look and see.
