Cleaning an Oil Painting and Original Frame
Comments (19)Linda - Forget what the hand-written card says, and look at the picture ... I see a young woman in a double strand of pearls, a voluminous gauzy white shawl, wearing a white gauze dress with a wrapped bodice and a raised waistline, and a very sleek hair style. Everything I see in the picture is consistent with it being painted between 1790-1810. Sully was a "society painter", catering to the wealthy, so paying a few dollars more for detail was not a problem for his sitters. He wasn't the travelling portrait painter who had stock canvases he painted heads onto, charging extra for personalization. Sully's fame was so great that women travelled WEEKS to get to his studio. This portrait was an expensive status symbol for the man who paid Sully to do it. And a fashionable young woman would not sit for a portrait in less than her fashionable best. The fashion for all-white, filmy, Greek-inspired clothing (on women) was over before Delilah was born. Look at known Sully portraits from the 1830s and see what they look like. Neckline, fabric, shape is all different. Also, by the time Delilah was old enough for this to be her (1830s), the "a la greque" fashions were considered not only unfashionable, but verging on immoral. Posing for a portrait in a Directoire style muslin gown would have been like posing in your corset cover ... unthinkable! "There is supposedly another portrait by the same artist of Nilson Henry Stearly and a sampler done by Adiline, but we are not aware of their whereabouts. They might have been sold when DH's grandmother died." Stories about family change over time, and ownership of objects and identities of portraits are misremembered unless you have someone who writes it all down as it happens and a family that preserves the writings. It's just as likely that this is Adiline's portrait, to match Nilson's, and the sampler was done by their daughter Delilah. The index of Sully's paintings is fairly complete, and it would be worth looking into it to see if he mentions the painting....See MoreMy 'antique oil painting' is done! (PICS)
Comments (32)Thank you teeda_2006 ! Funny story... My daughter's boyfriend has recently bought a house. The young couple are talking about how they will furnish and decorate, so I mentioned that the Goodwill Store would be a great place to start. My daughter looked at me like I was crazy and said "EWWWWW, I'm not going to decorate with someone else's stuff!" Today, I showed her this thread and she was really impressed with what you did. I think she was even more impressed with the $2 price tag and is changing her tune to shopping at Goodwill. I also think that my DD will become a regular on this board in the next few months - through me. :) I just love the way your "painting" looks on that red wall....See MoreHow would you frame these? Oil on Board?
Comments (44)OK well they are here! I would say I got what I paid for :) I am a bit disappointed in how the joints were put together on some of them. It looks like who ever did it was a bit sloppy and it disturbed the finish of the frame at some of the joints. I showed DH and he had no idea what I was talking about. but I see it for sure. They are clearance though I think so no returns. Now i have to figure out how to put the tension clips in and then DH has to put the D rings and wires on. (that is DIY, but they came with it. overall they look good though and they averaged $23 each with shipping....See MoreHow would you frame this oil painting?
Comments (33)I love Hobby Lobby…they did the most amazing job framing a set of botannical prints in fabulous gold bamboo frames for my master br. Plus, their stores are so much easier to navigate than Michael’s. Kind of like Chic Fil A is just a vastly superior product to McDonald’s, which explains the cars wrapped 3X around the CFA drive-thru, and no line at McD’s.😂 I think a lot of people overlook the political leanings of an owner if the product is good. Same with Publix…lots of people complain about their politics, but our community is frothing at the mouth to get one here. 🤷♀️...See Morecooperbailey
