Undermount glides - how do they mount?

I was talking with my cabinet guy this morning, and he said that my undermount soft close glides will be mounted to a 3/4in "shelf" just under the drawer. Therefore, I end up losing a minimum of 1.75in in height for each drawer: I lose the 1/2in drawer bottom height, the 1/2in glide height, and the 3/4in shelf height.

Is it normal for undermount glides to attach to a "shelf" under the drawer? I thought they attached to the sides.

Well, the ones that attach to the sides are called sidemounts, not undermounts (no, I don't mean to be a smartypants). You'll have to give up space somewhere for glides, whether under or side mount. I'm not sure about the specific measurements though.

Are these framed? I was able to get my cabinet guy to reduce the frame a good deal for less wasted space.

They are frameless cabinets. I know they mount to the underside of the drawer box (as opposed to side mounts that mount to the side), but for some reason I thought in my last kitchen that the undermounts mounted to the sides of the cabinet box rather than to something underneath.

I was thinking about getting the Kohler Tresham drop in sink. It has a raised rim so I was thinking less water would get on the counter. I also liked that it already has the faucet holes in it so we wouldn't have to have the holes cut out. The bathtub and toilet are Kohler almond color so the sink would also be almond color. I like the look of the under-mount better and can get an almond in it. Thank you for your thoughts on this.

hollysprings-thanks! so the size of the flange is probably why 2 sinks if the same size have different cabinet requirements do you see anyone doing drop in anymore? i am a little worried about chipping around the sink edge with the undermount

Thanks for the additional messages! HB didn't mean to ignore your suggestion for the blum solo...if I'm remembering right they are not full extension and that's why I was looking into the tandem. (Though at this point I would take the solo gladly over what was installed!) liriodendron-bless you! I find soft close very unnerving somehow. I've never noticed problems with traditional drawers slamming on regular glides anyway, but I really don't like that the self close are more difficult to open (this could be a factor for someone with arthritis/carpal tunnel syndrome.) DaveinO, I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying. My other frustration is actually that this model is advertised as full extension glides, but they are not (at least as currently installed.) Dave, are you saying that if I break the tab they will be 1) full extension 2) easier to open and 3) not pull in/slam on the last couple inches into the drawer? Also, what does "drift out of the cabinet" mean? Do you mean that there will be no stopping point to hold the drawer at the point of full extension, but that instead I could accidentally pull the drawer all the way out? Thanks!

Using a reveal with an under-mount sink to create a "ledge" sink.

Not advised to create a ledge. You physically can, but now you depend on silicon to keep things water tight. If you keep a zero reveal or an overhang, then water is less likely to accumulate on the sink flange (Which is used to create the ledge). The silicone then can stay intact longer, and not be needed as the primary water guard. Often the biggest problem we see with ledge sinks is with the installation. Some issues we have been told is with accessories not fitting. However, this is easily avoidable with two best practices: 1. The fabricator should always follow the template 2. Once the hole is cut for the sink, dry fit the accessories to ensure smooth sailing from the client. If you like ledge sinks then check this new release: Kraus Kore

I found an installation guide online that said the Blum ones mount to the cabinet sides. Is that true for all Blum's or only some of them?

Our undermount Blum glides attach to the sides of the cabinet. They are called undermount because they attach under the drawer.

Cloud Swift - Thank you VERY much for those pictures! That is exactly how I thought they attached. I can't figure out why my cabinet maker is telling me there have to be shelves below each set of glides for them to attach to. I wonder if they add those to increase stability of the cabinet??? And if so, then I certainly don't need them below every single drawer in a 4-drawer bank! Thanks!

Mine cabinets are very stable and they don't have shelves across the insides as you can see.

he's thinking like I was thinking... I'm new to this and he shouldn't be! lol!

i was thinking there would be a wood base below each drawer. could be I got that from the very old dressers and chests i have. they all have a wood base they slide in over.
