Everyday dishes -- can you help me find them

I would like some new casual dishes that I can use also when we entertain casually. So they need to be durable for our family, but look classy too.

Ideally, I would like square plates and bowls and the color cream or a creamy white. I can't seem to find any like this. Do any of you know of any? I don't want something too heavy, but I don't want super light either -- something in between.

Any ideas?

Oh, I love the term 'vessel collector'. lol I'll have to tell my hubby there's an 'official' name for it. :o) I too, have a thing for pitchers. There's just something lovely about their shape. I tend to like mid size milk ones (or smaller), as I have never had enough space for full-sized ones. Currently my 'every day' dishes are mostly Corelle, along with a mix of pretty china ones that I've picked up along the way from second-hand stores. I have a set of 'good' china that was my chosen pattern when we got married, but we rarely use them anymore. I have thought of selling them, but haven't done so as of yet. In my 'new' kitchen, I think I'm going to use the ones that I was given a few years ago by my step mom (full set for 12 + extras). She collected them over many years from boxes of laundry soap. (I was thrilled when she gave them to me.) They are so pretty that I have been hesitant to use them, but I am at the point though thinking that if I don't use them - who will? The ones that come after me likely won't care about the stories old dishes tell. I think perhaps they ought to be used and enjoyed rather than stuck in my china cupboard. Sorry I don't have a picture of mine - they're all packed away at the moment. They are pink rose bunches in the center with a gold (22 ct I believe) design around the edges. ~Missy Here's a generic pic from the internet.

We have 2 5' long reclaimed shelves that store our everyday plates, bowls, coffe cups (though my 8 week nursling disagrees with caffeine), little plates (need more of these), and canister set I use often. Love the easy access to get and put away: My almost 4 year old has her own drawer close to the floor. She gets and puts away her own "dishes" Finally we use these glasses on a daily basis for our brita: Love how easy it is to access everything. Our open shelves do at times look a bit barren when both dish drawers are full.

Even china that is "microwave safe" can show crazing after repeated use. We put our Gien dishes into the microwave but the crazing is starting to show so I hauled out some old glass plates and we're using those now. Or paper. Before I bought any china that I thought I would use in the micro, I'd buy a piece, put some water in it and test it. Zap it on high for 1 minute and see if the piece feels hot. If it does, it will be ok but have a shorter life. The cooler china stays, the longer it will live. All dishes are made from some type of clay. Stoneware -- anything that looks brown/beige when chipped -- has a high mineral content -- which means metal particles that heat up in the wave. Porcelain and china have less, but always good to test first. Re: Crate & Barrel. I bought a set of dishes there 5 years ago and they still have the same ones. I can still add any pieces. Some of their stuff is trendy; some is staple. Not everything goes away. I personally like to buy dishes in house sales or auctions. That way you don't pay "retail" whether you shop at Crate or Penneys. Waay cheaper. romy, thanks for thinking of me!!! by the time you posted this message i had already loaded the car twice at our first mall, hit 2 more stops and were just about stopping for lunch! we had a VERY successful black friday and saved a TON of money on stuff for the new house!!! the best part is there are people crazier than us who duked it out last night, so this morning the stores were empty!!! since sales don't come often at anthropologie, i splurged and got the white plates i've been courting for months now and then will pair with the green anthro mugs/bowls. i'm so in love!! with these: and: thanks to everyone for continuing to push the "white" issue. i love both sets and now you can all dine at my house without being grossed out. spaghetti bolognese will look lovely on my rustic white! :) PS: funny sidenote for anyone else who shopped at anthro today. in addition to the 20% off across the board, they were making this big deal about a "popper" at checkout. it's a little cardboard candy looking thing that you pop open at the register and confetti pops out along with one of 5 possible "prizes!" i later found out what the possible prizes were, but mine was a free appointment with one of their personal stylists. here are the problems with that "prize..." 1) FREE personal styling is available to everyone anytime at anthropologie by appointment or if they're there when you are. 2) i can't cram my size 14 arse into their clothes as much as i'd like to. :) anyone else get any Whomp whomp booby prizes today?

I purchased creme dishes about 6 years ago from a restaurant supply store. We use them everyday and they still look beautiful. Most restaurant supply stores sell to the general public.

I bought square plates a couple of years of from Pottery Barn. I just checked their website, but could not find them. I saw them in the store recently. They are lovely plates!

I'm currently in love with Denby from the UK. You might like their new White Squares line. Perhaps a little pricey for everyday tableware? but see the link below to some discounted web prices. On the upside they make their stuff to last for years and years and it's all safe in micro/oven/freezer/DW

Ours are from Crate and Barrel. Love how the white unadorned plates are the perfect backdrop for the food.

I am getting food service dishes from Niagara Ceramics from a restaurant supply store. This company is the former 'Buffalo China', post management buy-out. The downside is that you have to order at least a dozen dishes of most things, sometimes 3 dozen. Pros are the stuff looks nice, is practically indestructible (does NOT chip), has a glazed foot (so it won't scratch surfaces as easily), and comes in a wide variety of sizes. There are many different styles.

Looking at the downloadable catalog, it looks like they do not have square plates, but will post this anyway in case others are interested. Their more modern style is 'coupe'. Here is a link to their online catalog; contact your local restaurant supply store for prices.

Note: Do not confuse 'Niagara China' and vintage 'Buffalo China' with other 'Buffalo China' sold in the market today-- that stuff is cheap quality made overseas. Niagara China's products have been made in Buffalo, NY for decades.

If you do decide to purchase from a restaurant supply store, make sure you look at a sample before purchase. Look for
- a glazed foot (meaning where the plate rests on the table is glazed; unglazed surfaces are rough and can scratch tabletops or other dishes)
- nice application of any design
- even, unpitted glazing
- uniformity among like-sized pieces

Niagara Ceramics makes good quality stuff, but there are a lot of cheap imitations out there.

Wow, good suggestions!! I love the Pier 1 plates -- that is exactly what I am looking for. I will also check for a restaurant supply store in my area. I can't wait to visit Pier 1 and see how those dishes look and feel!

I really like the corelle- Here's an example of their heavier set of "ultra" ware. It's almost glass like, fairly light and can take all kinds of heat, and microwave use.. This is a picture of their "Scandia" line. Doesn't seem to chip either.

Try Sur La Table on line, if you don't have a store near you! They have gorgeous open stock creamy white dishes made by real artisans, at a good price. They come from places like Portugal, famous for good pottery, Turkey and France rather than a factory in China....I still have concerns about lead, etc. that may lurk in products from there.
