what are your everyday dishes like?
Comments (86)Oh, I love the term 'vessel collector'. lol I'll have to tell my hubby there's an 'official' name for it. :o) I too, have a thing for pitchers. There's just something lovely about their shape. I tend to like mid size milk ones (or smaller), as I have never had enough space for full-sized ones. Currently my 'every day' dishes are mostly Corelle, along with a mix of pretty china ones that I've picked up along the way from second-hand stores. I have a set of 'good' china that was my chosen pattern when we got married, but we rarely use them anymore. I have thought of selling them, but haven't done so as of yet. In my 'new' kitchen, I think I'm going to use the ones that I was given a few years ago by my step mom (full set for 12 + extras). She collected them over many years from boxes of laundry soap. (I was thrilled when she gave them to me.) They are so pretty that I have been hesitant to use them, but I am at the point though thinking that if I don't use them - who will? The ones that come after me likely won't care about the stories old dishes tell. I think perhaps they ought to be used and enjoyed rather than stuck in my china cupboard. Sorry I don't have a picture of mine - they're all packed away at the moment. They are pink rose bunches in the center with a gold (22 ct I believe) design around the edges. ~Missy Here's a generic pic from the internet....See MoreEveryday dishes - china vs porcelain
Comments (22)Even china that is "microwave safe" can show crazing after repeated use. We put our Gien dishes into the microwave but the crazing is starting to show so I hauled out some old glass plates and we're using those now. Or paper. Before I bought any china that I thought I would use in the micro, I'd buy a piece, put some water in it and test it. Zap it on high for 1 minute and see if the piece feels hot. If it does, it will be ok but have a shorter life. The cooler china stays, the longer it will live. All dishes are made from some type of clay. Stoneware -- anything that looks brown/beige when chipped -- has a high mineral content -- which means metal particles that heat up in the wave. Porcelain and china have less, but always good to test first. Re: Crate & Barrel. I bought a set of dishes there 5 years ago and they still have the same ones. I can still add any pieces. Some of their stuff is trendy; some is staple. Not everything goes away. I personally like to buy dishes in house sales or auctions. That way you don't pay "retail" whether you shop at Crate or Penneys. Waay cheaper. Added a link to an extensive list of tableware sources on Atticmag; some basic; some discount; some simply droolworthy Here is a link that might be useful: Tableware Sources...See MoreBeautiful everyday dishes on TV show Royal Pains
Comments (4)Cat mom - I love the show too! Jayce3 - The Sophie Conran for Portmeirion are beautiful. I am not sure they are the same dishes, but they are beautiful and a real contender. Which color do you have? I love the celadon color, but so many people advocate serving food on white dishes. I might do a mix of white and celadon, especially since there are so many more serving pieces available in white. Dianalo - That is a good idea. I had thought about trying to e-mail the show to ask, but wasn't sure who to contact. I actually don't have a FB account....See MoreEveryday dishes?
Comments (34)I had beautiful everyday china, that I sold, during one of the many moves while I was married. I used the china my mother in law put Jerry's initials on, back in her china painting days, instead for every day dishes then. After the divorce I no longer wanted to keep those dishes. First I used a set from my friend, stoneware. It was really to heavy for my liking. Another friend of mine has Corelle. I always liked the light weight of them. I searched, and searched, and found the all white, (winterwhite) online last year through walmart, for half price the day after Thanksgiving. I ordered two sets. and two sets of bowls. I LOVE them. Nice and light weight, and I bought some soup plates at walmart later to complete my set for me. :) Oh, yeah, the sets I bought at that Thanksgiving, had stoneware mugs made in China, I gave them away. Didn't need any mugs anyway. :) You might want to wait for a sale during TG? Moni...See Moremlweaving_Marji
