Lightening soapstone

This may sound strange, but bear with me.

I like my soapstone. I like everything about it, except, it is too dark. I oiled it once about a week after installation (but left a portion unoiled) to see how it would look. Dh and I both decided it was better unoiled. So we washed all the oil off. We have been maintaining it that way for a few months and mostly its fine.

However, I wish it were a little bit lighter. I know it can *get* somewhat lighter because occasionally I'll get lighter rings on it where something hot was placed. They last about a week before they disappear.

I have tried my steam mop and right now I have a hot water towel on a portion of it. I even tried hot milk because it seemed like that was what was making the rings (from the pyrex I heat my kids milk in).

Yes, I know I should just be happy with it, but those glimpses of lighter stone are so...tempting.

Anyone have an idea how to get all over lightening?
