I lurked on here for about 6 monhts before we started our kitchen remodel. It was such a great way to be educated about what was available, how different styles and products look, etc. Thanks to everyone who posts here. We had our kitchen done this spring, and we are quite happy with it. It was not DIY, we are not that talented.

What a terrific slideshow, and what a great kitchen! It came out beautifully (love the backsplash!)! Hard to believe it's the same space. Great first fridge contents--beer and milk; breakfast of champions?

We're in a hi-ranch as well (13x13 kitchen) in Rockland. We're almost neighbors!

First of all, thanks so much for the kind comments! It really makes me feel happy that you can't tell it was done on a budget! I've gotten a couple of questions about how this is a budget remodel, so here's how I saved money and a brief price breakdown: Layout - didn't change anything. This is where I saved the most money. When we bought the house I had grand ideas about gutting and starting fresh, putting in double wall ovens, a prep sink in the island, etc....then reality struck and I realized I didn't have the money for that kind of overhaul unless I won the lottery. The layout isn't too terrible. No "work triangle" but overall it works. We kept everything in place. No changes in appliances, plumbing, etc. Cabinets - didn't change them out. Kept old 1989 cabinets and had them painted. I did have professional painters do it, they came in, took off the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and garage door and took them back to their shop and sprayed them in BM Decorator's White. It cost about $1000 to have them do this and come in and paint the side panels in place. Countertops- tropical brown granite - total cost was $4300 installed and that included the stainless undermount sink and tearing out the old counters. That was my big splurge, but it was still cheaper than most of the other granite colors. I figured if I splurged on the countertops it would make the rest of the kitchen look a little more elegant! I searched GW for granite info and found lots of advice that was absolutely priceless, including a great post by Stonegirl that should be bumped to the first page for eternity. Drawer/Cabinet pulls - I got these from Menards, a Midwestern home improvement chain similar to Home Depot but less expensive. Total cost for all of them was under $200. Faucet - got it on sale from a local plumbing supply company - $250 Lanterns above island - Overstock.com - These were only $166 a piece, and I think they also give the kitchen a more glamorous look! Construction work (replacing soffit lighting, taking out fluorescent light box, leveling out island to one level, labor on backsplash)- I hired 2 guys to do the work at $25/hour. I had seen their work before and they worked with the granite supplier/fabricator on many jobs so it was nice that they all had a good working relationship. I saved money by doing the cleanup every night so I didn�t have to pay them to do it. They worked pretty fast and I�m really happy with the work they did. I would definitely hire them again. I think total labor cost was $1500. Backsplash - Daltile Rittenhouse Square subway tile in arctic white semi gloss. I looked up many threads on GW for backsplashes and settled on this because of the classic look and cost! $250 for materials, took the tile guy about 8 hours to do it. Adams Counterstools were from Target.com, not Pottery Barn. I liked the look in the PB catalog but found the lookalikes at Target. I have 2 little boys that are very rough on furniture so I didn't want to spend a lot. Plus, I was on a budget. I think they were $78 a piece. Kitchen table & chairs from Kmart. $229 for table and 4 chairs. Surprisingly, shockingly well-made. Kmart doesn't suck as much as I thought! Appliances- the range was kind of a splurge, it was about $2000. But I cook a lot and justified the expense. Fridge was on sale. Dishwasher on sale as well, it's okay, if I had to do it over again I maybe would have forked over a little more money for a better dishwasher. Apparently Maytag and I have different definitions of the word "quiet". Window Treatment - I think that roman shade from Smith + Noble was about $200. Oh, how I wish I could sew better... I absolutely love your kitchen but probably because it is very similar to ours. We have creamy shaker style cabinetry with some glass doors, midtone maple floors and the overhang of our peninsula is dark-stained maple - all the same elements as yours (except we have a granite counter - the very classic giallo ornamentale). Our kitchen has been finished since September and I am still playing with accessories and colours. I lived with it for awhile to figure our whether I wanted to stay in the neutral colours or whether I wanted to add some pops of colours. You do need to live with it and let it just happen and evolve. My Process then became: When I put some of my "play" dishes back into my glass cupboards (not the everyday ones) I noticed that blue was a common colour in my dishes and so I lived with those for a while and then I found some really cool orange/terra cotta plant containers at a local garden shop and they "spoke" to me so I brought those home and put ferns in them (they would actually look great in your space). The blues and oranges are really adding to my space. I will now wait a while but when I'm out and about I do keep my eyes open for little touches. I would wait before doing anything over your stove as you may find that you like the openness of the space depending on what else you do in the room. Don't forget that whatever you put there is going to get dirty and will need cleaning. What about a piece of metal artwork ? Just as an aside: I look at some of the beautiful kitchens that people have done with the fancy frou-frous and wonder if I should have done something like that and then when I see yours, which is so similar to ours, and I go -nope- ours is perfect for us. Again, I love the clean simple classic gorgeous lines of your kitchen and the accessories and accent colours will evolve.

Dietitian, I am pretty sure the cabinets are fully overlay. To be honest, I'm not 100 percent sure exactly what that means. I think it means no facing around the cabinets, which I have (and I'm sure Dutchwood does that) The file drawers work very well for the Pyrex. I keep all my Pyrex there except bowls. (I have a separate drawer for deep bowls that also has a CD rack in it to keep the lids separate. This drawer under the glass cabinets- I'm in our FL house now not PA so I can't take a picture). I'm not sure what to say about the garbage- here is a picture of it open if that helps. Dutch wood did every cabinet in my house (including pantry and closets). What a gorgeous, cheery new kitchen! I love that your "furry children" are clearly enjoying it, too!

Absolutely outstanding!!! We had a beehive like that in our attic...plus the bees! You and your contractors did such a great job. So many nice details. Some I wish I had thought of.

I'm not a real kitty fan (I have six dogs, hence my user name), but that is one fine looking cat. She is beautiful. Oh, and I'm with Jack, I would be sitting there waiting for the wine to get cold. hehehe!

ncl520, I LOVED watching the transformation of your boring plain outdated kitchen to the gorgeous, updated kitchen I wish I had. I LOVE the Cherry cabinets and now that is what I want in my kitchen when I am ready to redo the cabinets. Right now I am still working on my flooring. One project at a time for me since it takes me so long to pick out anything. :) I love the pull out pantry and pull out trash cans for trash and recycling. I love the idea of having a small refrigerator for drinks so you do not have to keep opening the big refrigerator. The room was just fabulous. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful kitchen! You did great! I love your cabs. So warm and rich looking. Aren't the full extensions just the best?

We have the same Bosch range! I just gave mine an initial test run this Sunday. Don't you love it? Have you tried baking in it yet? How does the convection work? Like a dream? Can't wait to test mine out more.

Again, great job. Love your sweet beasties! Interesting that they go with the color of your beautiful granite.

That's the same kitchen?! It is awesome! I just love the pic inside the fridge; beer and ORGANIC milk! Is your beverage cooler a KA? If not, what is it? That's what we are going to get due to recommendations from GW! I felt like with the transformation of your kitchen, your kitty was also transformed into your puppy! Very cute. The TV is a 19" Philips HD LCD. Very nice pic, even with only a coaxial connection it picks up whatever HD the cable co sends for free (major networks). I did not want a huge cable box in the kitchen. It does not have a DVD player. We did consider that, but had to be careful of the height of the TV. With the 42" cabs, and trim above and below, it JUST fits under the cabs. The blurring in the photo of my slideshow is the deficiency of the camera, not the TV.

Hope you see this. We are so thrilled with the tile. We were originally going with a glass tile backsplash, but we are so thrilled with this tile. It's really nice. Everyone comments on it when they see the kitchen for the first time.
The company that makes the tile is Italian. Company is called Ceramiche Gardenia Orchidea. The line of tile is I Cotti, the color is Ocra (as in yellow ochre). Though I wouldn't call it yellow at all. More of a tan with reds and golds? We bought it at a tile place in Wappingers Falls, NY called Best Tile. We saw it on their website, and went and bought it. You can go to the tilemakers website and fill out a form to find a dealer near you, or maybe or local tile place can just order it anyway.

What's a high ranch?

you are correct. High ranch, bi-level, raised ranch. same thing. Ranch house plunked on top of a high foundation to give two levels. Usually built in the side of a hill to give a walk out basement.
I never heard of one either until I moved up here from the city. Mine has cathedral ceiling in the living room and clerestorey windows up high, it looks a little more interesting from the outside, but at heart its still just a hi-ranch.

The DeWils cabinets are GORGEOUS. I went in interested in quarter-sawn oak, and the cabinet shop owner kept going on about this DeWils company he had just seen their products at a trade show and was going to carry them. We bought the cabs on the faith of a mini-sample of a cabinet (like a kid's playhouse size). We switched to cherry (along with alot of other changes along the way). I love them. They look like custom made fine furniture. Which I guess is what they really are. A lot of things included that you have to pay extra for with other cabinet companies.

I moved up here from Queens and my kids make fun of me, because I still moo at the cows, point at the bunnys, woodchucks, deer, etc. You never get used to it. Jack dog killed a chipmunk today. Ewww.

One last note, I love my Black Galaxy granite. It's super easy to care for, and black looks great with the cherry.
