Have you thought of wood look tiles for both locations? We've had them for 10 yrs and everyone, including contractors, think they are real wood. You can get them everywhere nowadays.

I second those wood look tiles. While we were able to refinish our original pine floor which was discovered when we demo'd, if it didn't come out to our liking, we were going with the wood look tiles v. installing a new wood product in the kitchen. Good luck!

I think she chose wood, in part, for pedal and back comfort. Choosing wood look tiles still leaves you with the hardness and discomfort of tile, yes?

How far out will the base cab come in relation to the doorway wall across the aisle? Will they line up?

I would love to have the wood look tile, or even a stone look tile in a hopscotch pattern. But we're concerned that the joint between the new addition slab and the original slab will have different movement and crack the tile.

I wanted to look at cork, and none of the stores around here have any in their showrooms. Plus, I've heard it's fairly expensive and I'm not sure I really like the look.

If you do the tile put the caulk style grout in the joint between the slabs. It is much more flexible. Also your tile layer can put under layment that should help.

We have tile that goes across multiple rooms with in-floor radiant heating. There are joints between the rooms that were poured with gypcrete that we've had problems with grout cracking at the doorways. However by patching with the premixed grout from Lowes that advertises itself as crack resistant we've fixed the problems (it comes in a tub). If I could go back and do it again I would do the whole floor with this grout as it is also very easy to clean compared to regular grout. I just had my bathroom regrouted with it and eventually will do my entry way. In these areas I have light tile so light grout. The rest of my house has the wood look tile with dark grout. Love, love, love it as it does not show any dirt or stains.

Now I'm back to being up in the air about flooring. We had a box of wood leftover from our living room and I just laid out the pieces next to the finished cabinets and I think it's just too much dark wood. I wish I knew someone like floorguy who could come over and see the slab and tell me what will work. *sigh*

Seems like you could use wood for your main part of the kitchen and then at the "angled opening", you could start with wood look tile planks laying them at an angle (maybe 45 degrees or so) from the straight wood slats in the main part of the kitchen. You could kind of do a parquet border where the two meet and "blend" the tile with the wood. If you did this border right, the need to match the "wood slats" exactly wouldn't be necessary and thus matching with the "wood look tile" wouldn't be too difficult.
I tried doing an ascii drawing but gardenweb compressess all the spaces so didn't work out.

This design would cause the "wood look planks" (better planks than tile) in the laundry area to be on a diagonal with the sides of the laundry room, a style that some designers use intentionally so I think it would look nice and not weird.

I just found this photo on Houzz. What year do you think this kitchen, mainly the floor tile, was done?

elphaba, if I understand you correctly, I had thought of doing something like that where the kitchen and dining room meet. I didn't like the angled door to the laundry area and plan on it being just an L off the kitchen now.

Marti- Wood is a great choice for your kitchen. It will be warm, easier on your feet...and not as noisy, which I know is important, too.

I'd stop the tile of the laundry room just even with the washer dryer. The garbage pull out could be on the wood and no one would see the division, with the wall oven at the end of that counter.

I think a wood threshold, between the wood floor and tile will look nice and give you a nice transition area. Will that work in real life? It seems to, in the pictures.

Can you put your washer in one of those pans designed to catch any leaks? And there is a drain installed in the pan that goes "somewhere"....

There are pans which fit under a single or double set. Run a search for Dripite. I have the same situation as you are considering. Have messed up my wood floor more than once with drips or making the stupid mistake of opening the washer at the wrong time.

You absolutely could leave the tile under the washer and dryer and then a foot in front of them or so, and then just a beautiful wood transition piece between that and the hardwood. That is what I would do.

Since you're remodeling could you put in a doorway between the laundry room and kitchen? I wouldn't do a door, just a doorway. That way it will appear to be a separate room and won't look weird to have tile in there. A side benefit is that it won't look like the washer and dryer is in the kitchen.

jjdcl, I'll be doing something of a doorway with the double oven cabinet acting as wall.

If we were to take a poll here and ask how many of us had their washers over flow onto the floor I would guess the number is very small.
I would take a chance and put wood all the way through. If you are concerned, then make a point of not leaving the house when your washer is on.

is there any reason not to have an angle for the change of floor material? angling from the outer corner of the oven cab over to the end of the wall left of the door?

I've had angled flooring changes in a few homes and it's never been a problem. In one house we put a curve in the flooring between the LR and kitchen.

I just don't think an angle would look right.

After I laid out all the wood flooring yesterday, dh & I decided that the wood makes the kitchen too dark, and a lighter wood wouldn't look good next to the darker wood in the living room. So we're back to looking at tile. Before the drywall guy left this afternoon, he gave me the name of a tile guy that often worked the same jobs he did. Maybe he can come out and tell me if our space can be tiled.

How about vinyl tiles? There are some that really look like stone and will be easy on your feet.
