Can I make this Sub-Zero fridge work in my kitchen?
Comments (15)Thanks everyone (especially Pal for the feedback on this unit and Bee for the idea). Unfortunately, my cabinets are semi-custom, so I cannot get a 27" wide 12" high wall upper that would symmetrically fit about the fridge. But, two great things I found out are that the company sells a 3" wide upper and a 3" wide lower that have pullouts with shelves for spices. So I'm going to use those with the "new" space between the refrigerator panel and range with some filler on either side to make it 4" wide, then I'll have another filler or refrigerator panel on the wall side, taking full advantage of the 32" opening I have to work with, and giving me some great storage for spices, etc. (I cook a lot). The upper above the refrigerator is still going to be a little complicated as I mentioned above. I love Bee's idea, and it could be done with a 30"+ wide refrigerator, but not this 27" wide one (with my cabinet company). There aren't even open shelf options. So I have one option that's actually pretty good. I can mount a 27" wide x 18" high x 12" deep two-door upper abutting the soffit and run the crown along the ceiling. That way, the fridge stack will run all the way to the ceiling and be perfectly symmetrical, and I will still get my 3" wide spice pull out. What do you think? And, good news today, my homeowners is going to cover the cracked granite (some of you may recall my granite cracking during my holiday party when I left a hot mac and cheese casserole dish on it). So I can replace that granite and the 4" backsplash and be subbed out with my leftover 4" square calacatta gold tiles, and get my new 4" strip for next to the range for my deductible. I haven't decided whether I will do leathered absolute black or honed antique brown (marron cohiba). I'm leaning towards the antique brown, which I have in the bathroom paired with calacatta gold but in a leathered finish). What do you think?...See MoreLooking for Zero / Low VOC paint, stain and sealer options for kitchen
Comments (4)BM Advance for cabinets has very low VOC, goes on like a latex, but hardens like an oil so is eminently washable and available in satin. BM's Eco Spec Silver is a zero VOC (even after tinting*) proprietary silver impregnated paint - the silver acts as an antibacterial, fungicide and mildewcide; it's recommended for kitchens, baths, hospitals and schools. *most of the big paint companies produce zero voc coatings- but not the tints....so once you add the tint, it's no longer zero voc. BM has changed their tints to zero voc as well....See MoreFeedback on kitchen appliance selection - Miele/SubZero
Comments (22)So...I didn't really consider the speed ovens until they were brought up recently on the thread. Now that I've looked at them, aside from the increased cost and loss of a turntable, are there any downsides to swapping the Miele microwave with a Miele speed oven? It looks like the footprint is identical, which would be my primary concern with this change. I didn't really set out to get three ovens, but given that I really want the standard convection oven, the combi-steam oven, and a microwave, it seems like it's worth considering this change. Given the desire for fast reheating, etc with wife and kids, having a microwave is necessary. Also, is it still advisable to keep the warming drawer? From what I've read, some have suggested the the speed oven and/or steam oven can replace a warming drawer, but @pillog's thoughts on this post have convinced me that I'm not completely insane for wanting to keep this in the layout. (Biasing towards Thanksgiving/large group cooking as opposed to everyday needs.) The layout would be: Main stack: convection oven (bottom); warming drawer (middle); speed oven/microwave (mainly due to the fact that the XXL Miele CSO won't trim match with the 30" convection oven but the microwave will: post and post) Separate stack (opposite side, beneath counter): CSO Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this design, it's been really helpful. -joe...See MoreDoes anyone have any experience with the SubZero IC-24C?
Comments (8)@Aglitter and @megs1030 - thank you for your feedback! This is a remodel, not a new build. It is a pretty busy kitchen and has been even more so with everyone working and schooling at home! I have 3 teens who do a lot of smoothie-making and microwaving and toaster-ovening. So it would be nice for them to have the main fridge and freezer near the kitchen table end of the kitchen (and out of my prep zone). However, I have read so many of the layout experts on here recommend that the fridge not be too far from the prep zone. So this combo unit seems like a good way to deal with that concern. It could be used for veggies, ingredients and sauces used only in cooking (broth, herbs, soy sauce, worcestershire), raw meat or seafood that is defrosting for the next dinner, etc. The main fridge and freezer would have snacks, condiments, all beverages, leftovers, frozen smoothie ingredients, frozen waffles, french fries, ice cream, etc. I have been hesitant about posting my layout ideas here because certain folks are so dismissive and their only advice is "get a KD." The only plans I have at this point are my own preliminary ideas because I want to work with a specific KD on this project and she is not going to be available for a couple of months due to some personal issues. I am happy to wait for her, because she is that good. In the meantime, she has given me a little "homework" of researching the appliances and starting some preliminary thinking about my wish list and layout. Once she is available, we will be able to get together and hammer out the details. Until then, I've been trying to gather my thoughts and ideas and start thinking through the many options. Maybe I need to just bite the bullet and post some of my layout ideas and try my best to not let the house kitchen bullies upset me. ;)...See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
