Does anyone have any experience with Aspberger Syndrome?
Comments (7)I'm ADD which is supposed to be a "mild" form of autism and, I guess aspberger. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my late 30's and then only because a friend of mine was complaining about her husband's behavior and she was describing me to a "T". Typical of someone who is ADD, I hyper-focused on researching it and by god, I'm classically ADD. For me, finally knowing why I didn't think like everyone else or behave like everyone else or find it necessary to be like everyone else was, I can't describe it, it lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. Opened my eyes. Most people with ADD have IQ's off the charts like autism etc., but we still crave typical social situations, so we "dumb" ourselves down with drugs (both legal and not) and alcohol (age doesn't matter), and try to focus with caffeine and tobacco (we are always trying to go up or down depending on the situation and how we feel). Structure is really important to keep us focused but it thwarts the creative side and we hate that. We are either off or on, there is no middle ground. Drugs like Xanax and Ritalin help greatly but only a psychiatrist "gets"it. Other doctors think we are addicts waiting to happen. Truth be known, by the very nature of our "disease" we can't remember to take our meds often enough to become addicted. I'll head to the kitchen to get my bottle of Ritalin or Xanax and decide along the way I need to go the bathroom and forget all about it, until 2 days later. In my case, once I knew what I had and why it made me feel different or act differently, or want to act differently from the rest of the world, I was able to learn to use it to my advantage. Truth be known, I learned these coping skills as a child, just didn't know I was coping. There are times, weeks even, where I can't keep a thought straight in my head, I know to just chill out and play dumb. Yes, Ritalin will help but I need to take such large quantities I can't sleep and then I take too much Xanax and can't think. Yes, vicious cycle. I don't like it, so I just allow myself to be a total airhead since, frankly, nothing helps anyway. I've learned when drugs will help (most of the time actually) and when they won't. There are times I wouldn't trade being ADD for anything in the world. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I gave myself the equivalent of a couple years of med school in one month. Only someone with ADD could pull that off (we've all heard of the kids who finished med school at 21). Unless I'm having a "duh" period, I defy anyone to get the better of me, unless I decide the fight isn't worth it (hey, I'm lazy too). What I'm getting at is find your kids strengths and weaknesses and do your best to give him what he needs to succeed by focusing on his strengths. There are strengths there, you just have to learn to see the forest for the trees. Teach him to compensate for his weaknesses, or as Stacy and I did, let him figure them out for himself. Remember, your kid's true problem is he is smarter than 90% of the rest of the world. You have to figure out how to make him feel as though he fits in. I will say, though, based on my parents mistakes with me, don't make him do anything he isn't interested in other than forcing social skills on him. We shut off and tune out so fast you won't know what happened. Never give ultimatums. We don't care. Suggest alternatives. If he is drawing on his bedroom walls, don't threaten to beat him, let him draw on the driveway instead. That will be the end of it. Beat his butt and send him to bed and the next thing he will do is draw on the house with a can of spray paint. Remember, his peers already think he's "weird", you can't top that. Okay, I hope this makes sense. Good luck. Basically, just use your gut instincts with the kid and forget what the experts tell you. He's an individual like no other in the true sense of the term, learn to make the most of it. Laura...See MoreTo Sub-Zero or not to Sub-Zero, that is the question...
Comments (22)I could certainly be wrong but from the sound of your post you sound like someone who has "aspired" to have a SubZero fridge not necessarily for a functional reason but to have the brand. It sounds as if you're going all out - two Miele dishwashers, etc. - so why not just go for the SZ? If you think about all the people who have been keeping their food chilled without investing in SZ, there has to be something people "value" about SZ other than it's functional ability to keep food chilled or frozen that would make them pay the premimum price. Could be appearance, appeal of saying you have the brand, etc. In any case if you want one and want to spend the $ go for it. It seems you can count on repairs with any brand these days - kind of like luxury auto brands. Just because you spend alot doesn't mean it will be trouble free....See MoreDoes Anyone Jave the SubZero With Glass Door?
Comments (19)Update on refrigerator crisis: we limped along with no freezer compartment for several weeks while I got a repair person out, and then a qualified subZ person out, and then a second opinion. I was almost ready to fix the darned thing, then the freon system in the fridge side developed a leak and at that point I was all in for a new one. After visiting a showroom to which you have to be buzzed in, I was giddy with all the new fridge features. Liked the glass door one but not as much as I thought--- I'd been prepared to love it--- but the interior is stainless and too dark for my 58 year old eyes, and the glass means you lose all the door storage, so that was a non starter. (I discovered that we cannot live without door storage in our refrigerator because we are condiment whores, with six types of mustard, three kinds of mayo, TEN salad dressings and how high can you count number of hot sauces.) Flirted briefly with the idea of using cabinetry panels on the new subzero, but afraid that would make the kitchen look like a snow palace, and/or that the colors would not match perfectly, with some of the paint being new and some seven years old. Salesman told me I could reuse our stainless panels and save about $650 so I was all over that, plus subzero offered me a loyal customer rebate on a new one of $550, so at least we did save about ten percent, and then the salesman said if we wrote a check for it we would get a 2% discount on both the fridge and installation charge, so overall we saved about 12.5 percent. For an appliance that never goes in sale, this is massive! Delivered today, they put the panels and handles on wrong (upside down, in fact) but graciously changed it when I pointed this out. We are going to have to do something about the floor (uneven wood abutting front bottom edge) but overall I am very satisfied with it. Great interior lighting, great storage, and the new interior drawers are clear perspex (or something similar) instead of white. Maybe now our potatoes will not sprout from neglect when put away in a fresh produce drawer....more likely we will simply watch them shrivel and die but on the bright side we will probably throw them away sooner :-) This post was edited by kswl on Fri, Nov 14, 14 at 6:41...See MoreWet bar refrigerator / freezer / ice maker (True, SubZero, Hoshizaki)
Comments (10)Hi L G, We ended up with all True for the bar appliances. In the living room bar, we ended up doing the True ice Maker and a True beverage center. We opted to put the ice maker here, as opposed to basement bar, since we figured we would use it much more often in the main living area as opposed to basement which is more used for movie watching and parties. So far that has turned out to be a good choice, since with two small children, we aren't hosting as many parties (yet). For the basement bar, we went with a True refrigerator, a True dual zone wine refrigerator, a True freezer, and a Miele dishwasher (Lumen, I think - I can get the exact model if you want). To be honest, so far this bar hasn't gotten a lot of use but we are still settling into the house, and I think it will be great once we are a little bit more up and running. It's been nice having the extra fridges for the beverage and wine storage. Overall we are happy with the selections. The quality and aesthetics are great. As someone recently posted on one of the threads, the True ice maker isn't "whisper quiet". You can hear it filling up water, clearing out drain, and dumping ice into the chamber periodically throughout the day. I honestly don't really notice it, and without basis of comparison, I imagine it's similar if not better than other ice makers due to the nature of the operation, but if appliance noise is a concern, I would definitely try to check out one and see if you are comfortable with the noise level before committing to one. But we've been very happy having it, and having it near the living space means it gets used a lot, and it's super nice making a cocktail and having a fresh supply of clear ice right by everything. Hope that helps, if there's more information that would be useful please let me know. -joe...See MoreLiz Court
