Help on end of counter run and pantry door/depth

My pantry will be 33" wide, double doors with ROTS, and at the end of a run. (Please no grief about the ROTS ladies :) ) The right door will open up to a wall that is 27" deep (so not much past 90 degrees but will have a small scribe). The left door will open to the end of counter run.

My first cabinet place strongly advised a 27" deep pantry vs. the 24" depth.Said the full overlay door would not open as wide as possible as it will hit the counter at end of run.

Makes sense so we were on board. . .

Now we are ready to order (with a different cabinet company and different KD). The KD said its an extra $365.00 to get the extra depth no matter how many inches. She said she almost NEVER does this....her suggestion is to angle the square edge of counter so its not a 90 degree. Thus allowing door to open beyond the 90 degrees.

Need suggestions and experiences on this one.

Will that different edging allow me the extension on the door that I want?

IÂm not crazy about spending that kind of $$ but do want that door to open as much as possible. I like the look of the counter going INTO the side of a frig or pantry.

For what its worth we were going to build out the frig box to 26" or 27" for the look but seing as how all frigÂs stick out a bit beyond that anyhow it may not be worth the money. To do it on the frig was $145.

Something to consider in the "money" equation... If you're getting a stone counter, your fabricator will most likely charge you more to "angle the square edge of counter". Fabricators charge extra for angle cuts...whether on an end, on a seating overhang, or a diagonal corner. How much more? I don't know, but I would look into it b/f assuming it would be less expensive to do the angle cut.

I know you don't want "grief" about the ROTS, but if you ordered a pullout (door(s) attached & pulls straight out), this would not be an issue! You would need enough filler to clear the door trim of the nearby doorway, but that's all. If it's not too late, it's something to at least consider. (The tall pullouts can be split into 2 or 3 sections...each w/a door and pullout shelves attached so you only need to pull out the section you need.)

As to the refrigerator box...yes, the doors must stick out past the alcove, but doors look fine; it's the refrigerator carcass/box that looks "unfinished" when it sticks out. The other thing to check is the walls of your refrigerator carcass...many of them have black walls & SS everywhere else.

Just some things to think about!

Do you have a picture sample of the Pullouts?
Is it similar to a pull out spice base by the ovens? Im getting one of those and never really thought hard about it for the entire pantry - may consider that.

I spent an enormous amount of time trying to sort this out. For what it is worth, I am getting Thermador freedom column. I had narrowed down to Miele and Thermador 36 inch bottom freezer. Miele cannot fit gallon milk jugs in the door. That is the only reason I am going with Thermador and not Miele. Subzero 700 in the size I needed had a terrible interior layout. I know someone that bought 2 of the same units that I was considering and they have to use plastic bins for their produce because the interior layout is inadequate. Essentially, not enough produce bins. (Go figure!) It's not just the depth of the frig. Integration has to do with the hinges as well. Many built in frigs require that the door be slightly (1/2 in) pulled forward of adjoing cabinets. Unfortunately, some of the KDs do not know how to do this right either. I was at a showroom and they had installed a Subzero 700 like a built in (ie pulled out 1/2 in or so, like Cali Wendy's) and not flush with the adjacent cabinets. I figured if they can't do it right (from my point of view, they NEEDED to feature what makes integrated frigs truly integrted) for their showroom, I could not hire that company. There are not many companies that offer truly integrated frigs. As I said above, it has to do with the hinges. Some models of Liebherr uses sliding type of mounting system on their panels. Subzero 700 series will be flush but not there Built In series. (The BIs kind of cheat but you need to pull the adjacent cabinets out 1/2 in or so, I think....) Miele, Thermador (and its cousins) and Subzero 700 are the only ones that I know that do "integrated" frigs. Liebherr is mostly there with their semi open grill at the bottom. JenAir needs Integrated models need grill at the top. Hope this helps.

We just installed our kitchen aid counter depth frige. It does not have counters next to it but rather pantry style cabinetry (which are standard depth). It looks like it sticks out about an inch or slightly less than I want it too (not the doors or the handles but the body of the frige). Once the doors of the cabinets are installed it shouldn't be as noticeable. My cabinet guy did recomend to notch out some of the sheetrock in the back of the frige where the plug is (because the stiff cords are preventing the fridge from going all the way back) and it should fit even better. The kitchen aid frige we have is model KFCS22EVMSO.

I think it looks great as is. Your fridge is big and beautiful. As long as it is not blocking doors or windows. But if it really bothers you because of the look and isn't blocking anything: If the side is magnetic, add a magnetic shelf or two to it and it will look great. Or put a side rack less deep to make the difference appear tapered. We had to remove our top cabinet to be able to fit the height of our new fridge, that only required unscrewing the cabinet simply held on by screws, was easy. But all this talk about cutting into drywall and all that hassle (unless you are skilled in that sort of thing) otherwise it might be more work and hassle than it's worth unless the fridge is blocking something. Post a photo of the copy of the approved plan they were supposed to build to. Does it show deeper sides with the adjacent counters butting into them? Enough room for 24.375 plus the 2 inches behind so that the sides of the refrigerator BOX can be installed flush with the front of the cabinetry? Normally a cabinet shop would make this allowance or at least go over the options and differences. But if someone else did the design and it was adhered to, you don't have much to stand on. Also, is the opening the correct height because the hinges not fitting into the opening (like the photo above) can keep it from going back as well? Did you by chance consider another refrigerator that would fit properly? That might be the easiest and most economical way to address the issue. Switch them up and sell the first one. And to the guy that commented about "custom shops" ordering components, this is a common practice throughout the industry. It's very rare to find a cabinet shop that builds every part of a cabinet anymore and as long as what is ordered is of acceptable quality and fits, what's the problem?

Only from Rev-A-Shelf. There may also be some in the FKB.

I've also seen an example of a pullout that goes up to the counter and then another that goes from the counter to the ceiling above the first one...but I don't remember right now where...I think it was someone's kitchen here, but I don't know! Sorry!

Think a little more about how you'll stop the counter at the end of the cabinet run - counters normally have overhang. Even with an angle cut, how exactly will that corner work? Can you see a similar one?

Will the doors bang into the counter or the wall? Are you going to have to put "things" on the doors to restrain the amount of opening? What kind of things does the cabinet company suggest?

Remember for the wall side that the door will likely have a knob or handle that will stick out further than the door.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen anyone get grief because of rots in a pantry cabinet...

I have the same set-up and we just pulled the pantry unit out from the back wall a couple if inches and used a skin to flush the side of the cabinet and hide the extra space at the back. It worked well and looks like a deeper pantry. We blocked with 2x4's behind the pantry unit to secure it. You would never know it wasn't 27" deep.

Bmorepanic = All very good questions. No samples to look at as of yet. My setup may not be like the others she has done so I hate to base if off of others. Everybody's kitchen works for different reasons and not everyone has the same obstacles/walls/setup.

.....and my comment about "grief" was just a little joke...since I found this site I realize alot of people moved away from ROTS to other methods of storage.
I will say that I switched all of my other ROTS to drawers for the rest of my kitchen. . . thanks garden web.
