Is it weird to miter the edge on island, but not the rest?

I know alot of people do the thicker slab for the islands, but usually they do that when the island is a different material from the perimeters. I am going to have all white macabus quartzite. Can I miter just the island and not the rest or will that look funny, since it;s the same material?? Thanks for your input, need to decide on this,tks, Michelle

Is the "perimeter" the cabinets along the walls, or something abutting the island like a breakfast level?

You can do anything you want, but you're asking a question with a lot of answers.

With different cabinet doors, the same paint ties them together and can make an interesting cohesive look.
With a countertop, it doesn't speak to me.
OTOH, if this island is separate unto itself and your perimeter is not attached, I don't see why not.
I also don't see why.

WHY would you want to do this is my main question. Is it simply about cost? Like, you can afford to miter the island but not the whole kitchen? If this is the case, tell your fabricator this. "I really really want the mitered edge, but I cannot afford to do the whole kitchen this way at that price. Is there any way we can make it so I am within this price range so I can have all of the edges the same?"

In my mind, a mitered edge is just that -- a miter rather than a butt joint. What you have now is just a rectangular piece of marble stuck to the bottom of your contertop. With the miter, they will cut back the edge of your counter at about 45 degrees. Then the piece that creates the built-up edge will also be cut to match that 45 degrees, and be attached. The seam will be the edge of the countertop itself -- not a visible seam along the middle of the edge piece. Now, color match is still an issue, but a mismatch won't be as obvious. If they used a piece from the same lot as the previous piece, you would see the darker top of your counter, and the white on the side -- still a mismatch, but not as obvious that it is two different pieces. I think it would probably look as though, when "sliced" the marble was dark on the outside and white on the inside. They still need to look for a better match.

we went through the same decision for our reno and had the same limits. full house reno, but sticking to existing exterior walls. our hallway is 4 ft wide and not so much of a hallway as a walkway because the only wall was the pony wall where the sink used to be. http://nopronto.com/house/floorplan.html the first floor plan is the original layout. the floor plan we ended up with is close to the third one, but with the pantry still opening up in front of the master (much to my chagrin). the island is also pushed a little farther back towards the window (we decided against french doors... for now). we left the appliances out of the island because we extended the lower part of the "L" as a pony wall all the way to the edge of the walkway and put the sink and DW there so i can look out over the great room and fireplace (we live in FL where it is entirely ornamental despite being 18 ft tall) while doing dishes. this leaves a nice big open walkway from the master/study/garage hallway to the great room and the rest of the house. so, if you're in the walkway area, you have the vast majority of the kitchen on one side and the island on the other. i'll eventually post pictures of the finished kitchen, but right now the cabinets are still lacking doors, the sink is not installed, and we have working plywood countertops. while distances between zones might be a bit more than recommended, i do not mind at all. i was ecstatic to give up the overly large and completely unused breakfast nook in order to get a wide open kitchen and the island the SO and i wanted. "cozy" is just not our preference. plus, i have a large and aging labrador-mutt whose favorite thing in the whole world is to sprawl out on the kitchen floor while i am cooking and carefully keep track of all the bits and pieces that inevitably fall on the floor so he can later figure out which ones are edible (all of them, of course!) while my back is turned. tight quarters would have meant shooing him away and/or tripping over him all the time. i still hate (hate! hate! hate!) the fact that the pantry is right in front of the master bedroom, but for some reason i couldn't convince anyone--the SO, the "in-laws," the KD, the framer, the drywaller--that this was a problem... and structurally it was going to be more of a problem to move the pantry door, so i gave up. however, it is very nice to wake up in the middle of the night and not have far to go for a glass of water. we don't have children creating a lot of traffic and we aren't planning to sell the house any time soon, so we made it the way we wanted (except for that pantry door!!!) it will ultimately depend on your and your family's needs and how much you fancy being in close proximity to your kitchen. good luck!

Hi crzy, You have a really similar color scheme to what we are going with, minus the glaze. We are also doing cream cabinets with a Calcutta gold backsplash. All the soapstones I looked at (and the selection was very limited in my area) were too busy and too green. I also *thought* I had settled on Jet Mist honed granite, (so pretty!) but when I saw it in person, it was too busy with the marble. Also, the gray shade was too "cool" with the warm cream paint and marble. To my surprise, what I finally settled on is Zodiaq quartz in Mystic Black. It is not too shiny, too dull, or too busy. It doesn't have the plastic-y look and feel that some of the other solid surfaces can have. It doesn't show fingerprints or water marks. It is kind of a dark charcoal color. I know there are some beautiful BLACKER soapstones out there, but they were not available in my area. I think in a smaller kitchen, the 2cm looks really nice--maybe even better than the chunkier 3cm if you don't really have any long runs. I know all about the addiction--I started having wrist and neck problems from all the scrolling and clicking hours. Even now, when everything is pretty much settled, I don't want to miss a good tip I could incorporate, so I check every day! Happy planning!

Blaming the stone for this unacceptable. It is obvious that they couldnt handle this simple mitering project and they should had never accept to do it. My suggestion is to: -Show them some of properly done mitered projects to prove that it is their fault. Unfortunately I got no photos of this material in my website but I do have many pictures of other quartzite complicated projects with Cristallo quartzite or Taz Mahal . Cristallo quartzite full mitered vanity Taz Mahal quartzite polygon full mitered island Since it is not installed the right thing is to get a refound . If you cannot be refound you might be able to accept the loss of your deposit and get your stone as is. Find an appropriate fabricator that may can modify and work with whatever you got left of the quartzite plus little more of the same material to get the job done. Be sure to check some of the mitered work of the profesional you ll find before you make any deal. You can still save this job.

I'm not sure what you mean by mitering. Is that when you stack the slab and make it look thicker? Or are you talking about a grander edge treatment?

This is the 2nd house I did the Long Ogee on the island and eased edge on the perimeter. I don't think it looks weird at all. In fact it fools the eye, people see the long ogee and don't even realize that there is an eased perimeter.

I am considering doing this very same thing with White Macaubas. I want the island to be 38-39" tall, while the perimeter cabinets are the standard 36". I want a 2.25" mitered edge on the island, with the rest of the counters having an eased edge that is 2 cm thick (the thickness of the slab). I hope it doesn't look weird. If I did the thick mitered edge everywhere, I would lose too much storage.

Given you mention thickness, are asking... if you miter the edge of the island, and in doing so make the island countertop look thicker than the perimeter ones, would that be ok looks-wise? My answer would be yes, I think it would be ok to have your island countetop look thicker even though it is the same material.

I think the OP meant to say, "Laminate the edge on the island only so the quartzite looks like a thicker slab"????

FYI OP - a miter cut or joint is an angled cut, typically at 45 degrees, to join two pieces at a 90 degree angle.

I think mitered edges look beautiful on an island and I think you could definitely get away with just doing it on an island. I thought about doing the exact same thing with our Cambria, but could not make up my mind in time.

hi guys, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, i meant if I miter the island slab,(bee-they don't stack it, they make the edges appear thicker, SHARHER has it on her white macabus island)and then i dont miter the perimeter counters that have the same material would it look funny? I really only wantd the thicker edge on the island, but I think I like that look when the island is marble or quartzite, and the perimeters are a different material.I think I might just keep it all eased edge. I think I'm scared of the seam that comes with mitering it.However I do love the look of the thicker slab on the island.

Cheifneil, not sure if I am the "OP" you spoke about, but yes Mitered edge is what they call it, like Marcolo stated, here is a picture of how they do it to make it appear thicker, Michelle

The seam on a mitered edge is pretty unnoticable since it's right on the corner. However, I think it could look OK to have the island appear to have a thicker slab than the perimeter, even if they were the same material.
