kitchen layout - seeking input

Hello all,

i've got a layout / design question. Below is a pencil whipped layout of just the kitchen in our proposed new build. Overall we are generally happy with the plan. We like that we have the 42" bar space AND the counter height bar space. The main thing i'm struggling with at this point is whether or not to put "colums" or pillars at the ends of the high bar to somewhat define the space from the great room and add some architectual interest. I think that given the length of the bar it won't look too much like a small window type pass through, but i'm not sure. Leaving them out opens up the already open kitchen completely to the living space.

Only other thing that i'm not certain about is the limited amount of upper cabinets but with the large pantry, it's probably ok.

Which way would you go on the columns? See any other glaring problems?

I'd have a problem with the distance between the sink and range. That's a distance to walk with dripping veggies or to drain a pot of boiling pasta. Do you plan dish storage in drawers in the island? With 4' on either side of the range (awesome!!) it appears as f you'd have room for a prep sink.

Hi, MarshallV. Columns are a very strong element, among other impacts framing a view in each direction. They need to relate to other architectural elements in a space in such a way as to strengthen them, but if placed wrong they can undermine a design by highlighting lack of attention to composition. For instance, if there's a fireplace at the far end, do the columns as placed do a good job of framing the design of the fireplace wall? The view into the kitchen from the living room side seems lacking when framed that way.

Not to say don't do them, just keep at it. :)

livewire - Thank you SO VERY much for the plan! I loved it but my hubby instantly saw issues with the oven/micro combo right by the doorway to the hallway and the formal dining room. Hubby couldn't visualize the island for some reason. The guy who jokes at me about my vision skills cannot see what you meant. I think I know exactly what you meant, and the island would be LOVELY! Misiwa - thinking it over about moving the micro/oven combo. LisaA - I like your design, but unfortunately we are planning to go with a counter depth refrigerator. Do you think it could be pulled off with a counter depth fridge instead of a fully integrated? I haven't ordered our fridge yet, so you have given me something to think about! BP - You sound like my mom, lol! So worried about dishes and utensils. I appreciate the concern, it makes me think about something like Lisa's design with the main sink not in the island.... Jdez - Thanks for the vote of confidence. By "like it is" do you mean the original kitchen or something that has morphed since that point? Sena01- I personally really liked your idea. My husband just thinks I would miss my cabinetry on that side. Thinking it over... Okay, I hope I did not leave anyone out! I want to thank each and every one of you for your input and especially those of you that took the time to draw my kitchen out or design it on a computer program! I apologize for not being on here sooner. My tooth is killing me, and my daughter started back to school today. Had an emergency call from my builder and had to drop everything and meet him earlier today. Safe to say, it has just been a Monday! You guys really are so helpful. Funny how you feel that the banquette in Option 2 feels squished. That was my reaction to the banquette in Option 1. While waiting for your next post, I'll chime in and say that that is a very decent space for a nice bathroom...and the layout you presented is a real waste of the space you have. There are much better options. For starters, that toilet should be moved...possibly into a corner under one of the dormers with a pony wall on one side of it. Then use that space where the toilet is for a really nice longer vanity, possibly with double sinks. In addition, I'd skip the bathtub and put in a nice shower...possibly along the 7' wall to the left. However, if you are intent on having a tub, consider a freestanding one rather than what you show with the ends enclosed by walls, which will really make the bathroom space unattractive and closed in. Finally, can you clarify where the door is? That will likely modify my comments on where to place things.

Would you keep the cabinet next to the window if you used corner shelves? I would, and I'd also put a cabinet on the fridge side. You could also put the wine rack adjacent to that cabinet, a better location for it than as a base cabinet. Here are some narrow cabinets with attached shelves. 15" should be the minimum width for a wall cabinet. Here they've done a good job of integrating shelves next to a fridge with upper cabinets. The accent color paint is a really nice touch. I would build the fridge cabinet with a 36" counter depth fridge in mind. There will be fewer 30" choices in the future. Eliminating the 6" base wine rack would give you room for a 36". I'd also consider an 8-12" deep pantry that butts up to the side of the fridge with double doors opening in front of the doorway. A shallow side pantry is easier to store in than a counter depth pantry and is cheaper than a pull-out pantry. By using a side pantry, you could move the fridge down several inches and get more breathing room in your breakfast corner. You'll feel less squeezed in between the corner and the regular depth fridge. The side pantry could have open shelves up top for pottery or cookbooks.

This looks very familiar. Whose layout has entry at lower right, bedroom and living room at upper left, dining area at top, and patio windows beyond? The layout shows ceiling fans. Surely someone recalls this.

MarshallV, I recently had architectural plans put together and the concept is similar. I would post a pic of the drawings but have no idea how to do it.

We have created a large counter top island just off the wall that will house our range and hood.

Behind the main island will be a smaller 2' wide x 7' long island that will act as a wet bar are with wine refrigerator and flanked by two columns.

We are doing this to create a divide between the kitchen and large family room.

From either the kitchen or family room you will be able to peer through the feature still creating the open feel concept but also offering separation.

This made additional sense for us since we are bumping out the back of the house by the entire length and are installing flush beams. Therefore, we needed to include at least the one support beam. This also helped us to incorporate a nice architectural feature.
