How about grey tile?

You have a budget in mind? I saw some really pretty glass tiles for $70/square ft. It was gorgeous, but no thanks. If your budge is below $20 or $15 per square ft, that would narrow down your choices. I also saw this at Costco a couple of days ago for only $6 per square ft http://www.goldenselect.ca/en/mosaic-wall-tile/casablanca-marble/ The picture leads you to believe that its white, but it actually has lots of gray and some beautiful light blue glass tiles in the mix.

I have Danby marble and it looks a lot like yours. I used Walker Zanger Gramercy Park in bone china (subways). There are lots of ceramic tiles that might work. All a question of finding a shade that will work with both the marble and your cabinets (I had wood cabs so it was easier for me to pick a tile). I do think a ceramic tile will be best -- not a marble tile -- for your backsplash.

In your case I think you need a transition tile because there is not enough of a difference between the cream and the white. I like the idea of the muti colored tiles that you show, just not with all of the dark and light tones. More on all light variations.
I could also see something like Babuskacat did in her kitchen but of course in your grey tones.
You might be able to find a cream that will blend from the cream of your cabinet to the white of the marble. But it will be not be easy. The white subways work in phorbin's kitchen because there is more of a contrast betwen her cabinets and the tile.

Thank you for the great suggestions. I would love to check out the walker zanger Gramercy park. There are no WZ distributors near us - Madison wi so I'm going to have to travel a ways to find a show room.

Ellendi I think your spot on about there not being enough of a contrast between my creamy cabinet color and my danby marble so a basic subway wont wor as it does in Phorbin's beautiful kitchen. I need some type of transition. I know cararra marble is out as it has too much grey and white. I think I really need to introduce the cream shade.

I love the glass tile look but I feel as if I'm going for the classic timeless look in my materials so I almost feel a ceramic would fit the bill better.

Boy does tile run the gamut in price! I never knew.

I also love Bee,s beautiful arabesque tile- not sure of the shade that would be best. I don't really want to introduce any "color" I like the uniformity of whites and creams.

Might be too much variation for you but what about something like this?
