venting about my vent

My vent liner insert thingy arrived today. And it's the wrong stupid vent! Grrrr...

Okay, so it _is_ what I ordered, but the specs on the website are wrong. They had the specs for the vent I really wanted on the page with the wrong one. And hey, this one cost less, so why not?

I did sooooo much ventilation research I can't believe I messed this up. It was really difficult to find something that met my technical needs and aesthetic wants. (sigh)

I can't use this one or retrofit it or anything. So now I have to deal with the whole return process and shipping and re-stocking fees and blah, blah, blah. AND order the right vent, probably with express shipping since I wanted to get the hole cut in the ceiling before the cabs arrive and I want the thing here to do that because I am paranoid.

grrrrrr. Thanks for letting me vent about my vent.

I share your pain. I can't even return stuff I ordered that was wrong: way too much backsplash tile, baseboard molding we ended up not liking, dishwasher handle that's too big. I hope Craig's list will come to the rescue.

Things WILL turn out all right in the end ...

If the specs on the website are wrong, you shouldn't have to pay any restocking fees especially if you're going to order the correct one. Did you call them up about it - they really ought to pay your return shipping too.

Yeah, these will be the next generations Victorian Mansions, split into lots of little apartments. Then the next generation after that will move in and restore them and gentrify the neighborhood and raise the complaint of taking away afordable housing. Plant abuse kills me!! It is actually one of my pet peeves that we don't teach people in school how to properly maintain their shrubs and trees!! Like you said, you would expect that someone you HIRE to do it would at least have a clue, but it is amazing how clueless these people are and still make a living, because they are paid by equally clueless people. And like Alexa's neighbor, I can totally sypmathize, because my dad (the mow and blow guy) has pulled a few doozys in his day! (Like cutting down all the pesky "Cottonwood" trees along the river bank on their property, except they weren't cottonwoods, they were silver maples which are now all sprouting hydras from the stumps, and meanwhile the whole river and neighborhood for miles is lined with cottonwoods). But I'm working on him, and he is making progress! He now carefully tends the river birches I planted to try and salvage something of the view at my folks. Some people should not be allowed near power tools!

I like my cooktop a bit closer to my sink and on the same counter run so I don't have to carry wet, drippy things across my floor. So I'm not sure I'd like that. I go back-and-forth between sink and cooktop frequently so the longer trek would bug me. If you go with that plan, I can see the peninsula becoming the major prep area instead of the back counter. If you find that's true for you, you will want to move the DW to the other side of the sink. I do think that long, uninterrupted back counter would make a great baking center. But I also think moving the wall ovens next to fridge (or removing them and replacing cooktop with range) would give you better advantages and still give you a baking center. I like Palimpsest's idea better. Again, YMMV.

My DD informed me this morning that a long stretch of counter at the back of the kitchen would look "weird" and just get covered with stuff, THE NERVE! It's like she knows me or something. It's weirder to have a long, useful counter cut in two by a vertical element. Show her the NKBA guidelines--a budding kitchen designer is never too young to learn. ;) Guideline #3 (In part): A major appliance and its surrounding landing/work area form a work center. The distances between the three primary work centers (cooking surface, clean-up/prep primary sink, and refrigeration storage) form a work triangle. Guideline #4: A full-height, full-depth, tall obstacle should not separate two primary work centers. (Examples of a full-height obstacle are a tall oven cabinet, tall pantry cabinet, or refrigerator) If the oven cabinet is directly adjacent to the fridge, it becomes part of that work center--you move items from the fridge to the counter beside the ovens, then have a clear field to the cooktop. That long counter would be useful for staging baking trays for making cookies, lining up and landing multiple dishes going to/from the ovens for large holiday meals, and assembling school and work lunches.

HUh! The company has an error on THEIR website and they're making you pay restocking fees? I'd speak to a supervisor. Not only should there be no restocking fees, they should pay for the return shipping!

Well, I'd say the fault is split. Their basic description of the item was correct. But they had also included a link for a manufacturer's spec sheet for the wrong item.

Didn't feel like waiting on hold today so I sent them an email about it. We'll see what happens. Knowing what you guys think means I'll probably play a little hardball. I'll post their information and results whether it turns out good or bad.

Good luck with your vent. I too have had vent problems. My arrived smashed into little pieces. Then it was backordered for a month. When it was supposed to be delivered, it is back ordered for another month. Of course I waited at home all day Saturday for them to finally let me know it wasn't coming. I feel your pain!

Definitely call them...usually a phone call works better than an email.

(BTW...OT...but did you know that when you mail your congressman they give "snail" mail more weight than emails? My nephew worked as an intern on Capitol Hill for his state's senator one summer...he told us this little tidbit.)
