This is not a remote little nothing cabin, given the full kitchen suite of appliances. However, you have not told us how you will use the adjacent space(s)--do you have an encroaching living room + dining area? Where is the view? How many in family? How frequently is the place used? In the mountains, at the lake, at the ocean, on acreage for hunting?

I'm a lake cabin person and I know how our family used our cabin over time. You orient yourself to the view usually. Wouldn't want to sit with back to the outdoors unless it was necessary. Family activities changed as kids grew up--when young we spread out to play on floor but when older and when the place was electrified the position of lights over tables dictated usage of the adjoined rooms--board games, cards, overflow seating for meals. Wood stove also was a fixed thing--couldn't have children by it, and wood needed to enter through door and go directly there. My point here is that the more fixed things, the more fixedly you use the place. Reconfigurable pieces allow a variation in use. We had a long trestle table with two benches and some spare chairs--we sat many people there and all conversed and enjoyed one another. That is many peoples' primary memory of the time at the lake, outside of being outside.

Consider a substantial but moveable cart to create a floating corner to the kitchen space at the junction of a line from rt of outside door and left of inside door. It can be towed to side to create various configurations, including buffet service. Forget seating at it. Maybe put microwave on it if you can put a plug into the floor there. The thing about recreational cabins is that the activities of the family dictate the use of the space; if you put a sit-down island there you won't be able to have a full family sit-down supper elsewhere.

Your problem with making a peninsula perpendicular to the big window in these photos is that the walkpath from outdoors is too tight there. Pedestrians will need to go into the area now taken by the table, which is unfortunately already taken.

If you could bump the refrig to the right, you could have more plunk space at the range--perhaps a piece of butcherblock or something with a narrow storage unit below it; if these are cabs that you can mess with, move or replace the upper over the refrig to bring back feeling of completeness up there, but what will you store there anyway? Another option: bump the whole range area including uppers to the left (is that a real vent with complete outside channel in wall or a recirculating one?) Put open shelves or something into the gap between old cabs and this new splice--open cubbyholes for wine bottles at bottom and pigeonholes at top or something. You're clever and you'll figure it out. Then the person at range doesn't do the fanny bump with person at sink.

Microwave should go elsewhere--into the dining area on a cart/bookshelf/whatever. That space next to doorway is too precious to give to a microwave. Or, get an over the range one, but this will bring more traffic into a room that you're trying to route traffic around.

You will need rules--such as nothing non-kitchen stays on countertops for longer than 10 minutes. No fishing gear, no luggage from car, no agates from the beach or whatever. No no no. You need an alternative landing spot for this stuff and unfortunately your door swings wrong way to use the corner for it. Is there a weatherproof plunk space outside this door?

Banquette seating under window might be helpful--when it's just two people there, the banquette becomes the plunk and storage place for coolers, fishing poles, whatever, and the table can be pushed up against it.

If you do an island you can extend it to include a built in dining area. This pic is the general idea. Yours could be a bit wider.It looks like you could go up to 40" deep. The one in the pic looks only about 24" deep. That would give you ample storage and work space. I am eyeballing here but you could probably make the island/table 8ft long and still have plenty of walking room. I dont remember the rule for space to move. Anyone?

hi wisconsin, congrats on your cabin! your space reminds me of mine - we live in a very small house with views of a lake. We decided not to sacrifice a window to make a peninsula and have a small island with deep drawers on the inside and beadboard on the side facing the table. We cut the quartz top with leg room for 2 stools - the top is not yet fixed in place because I am still not sure I want to give up the room we lose - as Florantha mentioned, seating will take away from your dining space. However, we use it CONSTANTLY for buffets, prep, and landing space for groceries. We recently had a crowd here and kids sat at the island all the time to chat and help fix food. The island is adjacent to the fridge and breaks all the GW "rules" for walkways - we just left enough room to open the fridge and the dishwasher but 2 people cannot pass at the same time.

In any case, I am a fan of small islands in small kitchens. Mine can be moved if necessary, it is not bolted to the floor, so if appliances are changed out the thing can be shoved over to make room.

I'd take that door to your deck and put in french doors or a sliding patio door-i see the light streaming in there. I'd remove the kitchen window-too small-no view-very small amt of light benefit. then I'd move range to where sink is and guss it up with hood, decorative tiles in backsplash-nice visual focus from living area[sinks are never that attractive], and you can vent your hood outside.Sink can go in small island opposite frig/or where range is//perhaps a corner sink. You can get at least a long butcher block cart opposite frig-seems as though a similar shaped island would work-if you want that permanence and have the money for it.For me-I'd be happy with butcher block cart and put the money into the door change/venting hood and change range location-and also a cab depth frig.At our get away cottage we grill on the deck quite a bit, don't need too much of a kitchen, as activities are simple and outdoor-oriented.Keep it open and airy and aim for some kind of style with the cabs-even if just a few basic cabs.Rustic?...hickory, knotty alder?
