There is a lot to be said for humor. So have you guys heard how many bacteria there are on dollar bills? I heard the large the denomination, the more bacteria they have. I think you should all send me yours and I will culture them and send back the ones that test "clean". I promise to keep the contaminated ones far, far away from you where they can't harm you any more.

I do wish someone would come up with a list of granite you might call 'generally agreed safe', as they do for food ingredients. I suppose the liability issues are too constraining.

In order to do that Oruboris, they would have to test them all and we are a long way away from that. Also, your definition of "generally safe" and mine might be totally different. I think granite in general IS "generally safe". Like asking for a list of granites that are generally low maintenance. Most are, but your definition and mine are probably different. What do YOU mean by "generally safe"? If they tested 1000 slabs from the same quarry and 999 were free of any radon or radiation but one was higher, would it get crossed off the list?

This isn't really the issue, is it? Because it comes down to an individuals choice. Cars are not "safe", nor does it seem that cell phones are (for the time being). Riding in an elevator has it's dangers as well as simply sitting in a dark room avoiding the world.

The important thing is to not let other people decide for you what is dangerous and what isn't. I don't care if my new granite counter tops are glowing green and I sprout a third arm. If it's what I want then by gosh I should be able to have it.

What we don't need is another governmental intervention for our collective "well-being".

Granite does kill folks - there are a couple of deaths reported from full slabs falling on people once a year or so.

But then again automobiles kill not only stone cutters but your teenagers at an astounding rate!

Around here, the geologists are more concerned about the big fault rupturing than a couple zesty countertops. What I want to know, though, is this: If my kitchen is situated a mile from the fault in a liquefaction zone, what magnitude earthquake would it take to damage my counter if I went with granite?

And will it release any radon?

Is it really true that the shine reflected off the really big Vinnata faucets in the chrome finish can fry your eyeballs and damage your sight? I am so glad I got the smaller size for my kitchen. I read on the net that the smaller Vinnatas don't have the same reflective value as the larger ones and cannot really harm your eyesight at all. I am seriously hoping this is true since I need to do dishes RIGHT NOW!

If I could get some of that glowing granite, I wouldn't need undercabinet lights! Would I then have to mount it above the counters? But it is the counter... and then I couldn't afford to get more granite for the counters. Does laminate look good under undercabinet granite?

So now we have to worry about hot halogen lights and granite too?? What the heck are we to do?

cooperbaily, sorry to hear to you had to go through a real cancer scare, esp. before enough information was available to sue your kitchen designer, granite warehouse, fabricator and installer for enough bacteria laden money to retire in comfort on what was left of it after I did the cultures and paid the lab for doing the test for you. Psst, now I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that some women going through menapause like to lay on cool granite because it helps cure hot flashes. Now, I know this sounds like an old wives tale, but you know, there certainly does seem to be a majority of more mature women insisting on granite, don't you think? And it does seem that laying on cool granite naked might cure or at least give relief to hot flashes. I say it's worth a try and it should be all about cooling thyself off.

Common' ladies, those that really know, is there some hidden benefit to owning granite that you haven't openly shared? Do I have something to look forward to? My DH would be thrilled to know his money might have gone for medical benefits. (Do you think we could use this as a deduction of some sort? Just asking...)

sherilynn, i haven't hit menopause but when i was pregnant with my twins i had a problem with fainting. we were at a crowded outdoor restaraunt in august and you guessed it....i went out like a light! They cleared all of the desserts off of this huge granite slab and layed me out on it......right in the MIDDLE of the restaurant. Now THAT was embarrassing:) I will say though, it cooled me off quickly so i'm sure it would work great for hot flashes!!

See, karrlouise, there must be some inherent 'knowing' that granite is a natural healer of sorts. Great minds must think alike. As for granite killing...and tombstones and all, mitchdesj, I think, I know it's a stretch, but it' possible that all those ladies that know the granite secrets have somehow communicated to all the granites in the world to set up a monument to stand through the test of time to honor their recognition of the hidden secrets in the stone. Now, it's possible....anything's possible...right? Stone speaks to us. I know mine did in the granite yard. Ya' know something like, wo/man honors stone, stone honors wo/man kind of thing. I can't leave men out of this. There are those sensitive souls amongst us like Bill, Kevin, et al.... :D

I am glad I read this thread. I have been dying for the past few days to write--if granite kills, what about other natural materials? Uhhh, let's see...natural materials that kill...hemlock, rhubarb leaves, certain spider bites, rattlesnake poison, DB's (dear boyfriend's) cooking--hmmmmm, all natural materials (although not so sure about the DB cooking one).

However, didn't want to encourage a certain poster from continuing to post. Thanks for the great humor. Love the tombstone one and the large dollar bills (although mine went to the granite yard and fabricator as well as my cabinet maker and contractor--so it looks like we are all in deep trouble--as in 6 feet deep).
