please give step by step kitchen renovation process!

new cabs'll be ready in 2/3 weeks, demolition of old cabs done,old tile has to be removed next week.

what is next step? skilights? ceiling? painting wals? floor? what you put under your cabs, appliances? the same tile or hard wood floor? is it make sense to put tile under cabs & appliances and rest to do wood?

do you have to do complete floor before cabs instalation/appl. (pls for both woods & tiles as still didn't make final decision)? can be floor be scratched during cabs instalation? is there any roules to follow?

You might try posting the flooring questions on the flooring forum. I think most people do not put hardwood under their cabinets but do so with tile so what you pick will affect the outcome of that question.

Is all your electrical and plumbing done? That would be next once you have your specs.

Makes sense to install a skylight before you finish your ceiling.

I might paint prior to installing cabinets so you won't have to worry about taping off and there would be no chance of getting paint on your new cabs. Keep extra paint on hand for touch-ups.

JD, This could be personal preference. I leave the leaves and buds IF there is no sign of mold/rot/decomp, they're clearly firm and also located nearest the (to be) unburied end of the stick. I prefer to focus on roots and leave in the bags as long as possible to accomplish that. This is just my preference! Everyone does their own thing. If you have the same lack of rot that I've had, you could get away with it. If the leaves had started to rot and I was seeing no roots, I would personally 'nip it in the bud', pardon the pun. Some more experienced rooters may possibly try to cup it up. My experience is, premature shooting moved to a cup with no rootlets = the cutting will continue to shoot until it runs out of energy, then the leaves will droop, fall off, rot on the potting medium if not removed, and eventually the shoot will shrivel and die. I *have* seen additional shoots occur from other locations, though. Just for pictorial example, this is a Sudliche cutting I received from an amazingly generous forum member a little over 2 weeks ago. BTW - This is also a prime example of masterful pruning and a great callous, same as the cuttings Dan sent you (some people are just amazing like that). The person who cut this was very thoughtful and knew what he was doing. First pic shows what I wait to find before transferring to cup - at least two or three 1/4" rootlets. Also for reference, the 2nd pic shows the top half of the same cutting after I cupped it up in 50/35/15 coarse perlite/Fafard3B/sphagnum. Not the growth. That same growth has been in a paper towel for almost 10 days, AND it went through the antibacterial soap scrubbing AND the 10% bleach dunk with no obvious ill effects. No rotting present, and no issues.

"It makes little sense to me as why people would take such a winding road of using drawings from one dealer to purchase a different brand of cabinets from other dealer." You'd think wouldn't ya? But it happens all the time. After all the design is free right? Over the years I've had, and seen other KDs have, clients walk off at the end taking plans to another dealer who now doesn't have to work much, solve details, etc. So discounts the job. Hence some dealers want retainer. The majority of dealers don't ask for a retainer. Many that do want it up front to do any work. Some don't want to scare clients but want to be covered so charge in stages, a small sum to start and establish price, then more for finals. It sounds like that is the model your place uses since 500 is only adequate for a really small simple job. Places that ask for a full retainer up front want much more. I realize you believe you have a finished design already. Based on average experience, the dealer may not. It is rare for someone to walk in with a plan that doesn't require a good bit of work and revisions. I can't tell without being there. Hollysprings says hi end shops charge retainers. While I do plenty of hi end I also do lots of little jobs. To me it is a matter of respecting what I do. I am convinced that it makes for a better relationship with the client. I do retainers, after the second design meeting. By then I've been to the site, a scheme is chosen and clear pricing is provided. Typically I have 12-20 hrs in by then. I get 10%, commit or shop. I always release drawings -drafts (and parts lists with itemized prices) from then on. There can be as many revisions as needed. This is not the typical model uused by anyone else though. Occasionally I will release a draft without a retainer: when it doesn't matter, not much work is put in, a referral from a pro, or I really trust the client. In your case I might but hard to say. Finals are more work, should be few if any revisions, and require a final site visit. They come at the end. (I've done plenty of jobs where the finals were 8-10 pages, 11 x 17) I get paid by when you buy cabinets, but I sell kitchens. Kitchens involve design, details and service - all included but not free. Someone suggested that renderings, design and such are provided in the hopes of selling the job. That is how many dealers work and I believe it accounts for some of the problems folks see with lackluster KDs. Not unlike- Your boss asks you to put in a week and half on a project, but won't let you know if your getting paid until your done. Edited to add: There is a legal liability attached to drawings. I know of one case where client took drawings from dealer A, bought cabinets from dealer B, had problems and sued BOTH dealers. And won the suit against both. " if feels less overwhelming and more like an interesting puzzle" good going carrie! keep us posted on your progress. I decided I should do something similar. With all my stacks of stuff to 'to do'. I'm going to plan on attacking 3 a day - and if I get 2 done I'll be so pleased. small steps. I'm starting with the stack of papers by my bedroom window. It WAS a stack until my dog thought she saw someone waaaay out at the road thru the 6" I had the blind pulled up (and window open). the papers went flying to the floor. I did rather swish them together - but not good and still on the floor... so that's 1st. I even have a few empty folders to put them in by category (it's car, doc, vet receipts etc). I already made myself make a trip down the road to my sister's to drop off my trash (I take mine there to be picked up). I'd been putting that off for at least a week. Getting serious with organizing my pantry is on the list (it was once...). plus several boxes of paper 'stuff' from when I moved 2 or 3 yrs ago... good grief! if I die before this stuff is done, my son will kill me!

Are you DIY? Or, do you have a KD and/or GC? If so, ask them how they work. If not, there are also many resources in the Library that would help.

Here's what I've learned from our experiences...a very, very general synopsis of events:
- Generally, you would make the infrastructure changes first. This includes changing doors/windows/walls/ceilings as well as rough-ins for plumbing and electrical work.
Preliminary electrical & plumbing work will need to be inspected prior to closing up walls and installing cabinets.
In our case, we wanted the tile to go under the cabinets, so we put in the tile floor before the cabinets and appliances. Those who do not want to tile (or put other flooring) under their cabs & appliances sometimes wait to do the floor after the cabinets have been installed. If you do this, be sure the flooring under the cabinets & appliances will be flush with the planned finished floor...this is so (1) you can easily install/remove appliances and (2) you don't lose counter height.
Some people paint before the cabinets go in...we primed walls & ceiling and then painted the ceiling. But, we're waiting to paint the walls b/c I'm still not sure what color I want to use and need to see everything installed first.
Cabinets go in b/f appliances, of course. Then there's crown molding and light rail and cabinet lights (inside/under/over).
Backsplash can be now or later.
Appliances go in after the cabinets are installed. Then there's the toekick, furniture base, shoe molding, etc.
All the finishing touches.
Final electrical & plumbing inspection.

Do NOT take this as gospel...it's just a general outline of what was done on our project...YMMV!

Well, we are mid remodel and this has been the sequence of events with our contractor:
1) Demolition of whole kitchen, including 3 layers of ceiling and floor
2) Removal of existing windows and reframing & Installing new windows/door plus re-framing where we took out some stairs & a half wall
3) Strapping of ceiling
4) Rough electric & plumbing
5) Insulation
6) Drywall & installation of new subfloor

Next will come cabs, appliances & finish work (paint, backsplash, trim etc) as well as re-siding parts of the house where windows etc were taken out.

As mentioned above, we had inspections at several junctures, but that hasn't been a hold-up since they've been quick.

Oh, I missed demolition...that's the first step.

Actually, the first step would be to plan your remodel. Then pick products & services (often go hand-in-hand, but not always).

DIY...make sure you have all the tools needed!

Then, once you have products in-hand, demolition, etc.

Steps in kitchen remodel

1. Plan

3. Plan :)

4. Shop - local, online, CL, ebay, acquire everything you need and store it in garage or store room
5. Have large appliance delivery scheduled
6. Have the cabinets in hand, inspect them all before you start demolition

7. Build temporary kitchen
8. Demolish kitchen, cabinets, floor, appliances, drywall etc
9. While wall are open, electrical, plumbing, lighting, gas
1. Insulate, drywall, paint
2. Flooring goes in first (just my preference)
3. Independent toe kicks, cabinets (uppers first)
4. Appliances + sinks
5. Lighting
6. Moldings (floor and ceiling)
7. Countertops
8. Weekend parties for the next six months to showoff the new kitchen :)
9. Backsplash
10. Post on GW and enjoy the rave reviews.
