Off center sink or larger super susan?

I have a bit of a dilemma on the sink wall I am planning in our kitchen. I am managing around an existing window.

I have two choices: a 33" super susan in the corner with a centered apron front sink next to it or a 36" super susan with the sink about 3 inches off center in relation to the window frame.

The kitchen designer thinks the 36" super susan is quite a bit more functional than the 33" and I probably won't notice the 3" offset on the sink. I currently have an off center undermount sink and it doesn't bother me but an I'm worried the offset would be much more noticeable with a white apron front sink. I haven't been able to see a 33" super susan so it's hard for me to really assess the benefit of going up to 36". Which one do you think would be the better option?

That is a dilemma!

Crap, this stuff is hard! Since every manufacturer varies in how much useable space there is with their SS, it would really help if you could get some specs at least, and then mock it up with cardboard.

I have 2 36" lazy susans (one with no innards yet, and one with the standard chrome rack with centre pole which has already gone wonky in a few months of very light use). Will it affect the size of the opening. I like mine, I can maneuver bread makers, etc with ease (my apppliances are in the 'empty' LS, not on the chrome rack- it's tippy just with very light potato chips/noodles on it)

I have pics of SS in my files, and each one is different. some utilize every inch of space- ie the radius of the circle is maxed to the very edge of the cupboard, some have 1-3" of space wasted, so again, if you could get specs and info on the actual turntable that would help.

How wide is your window? I think the wider it is the less noticeable it would be. That said, so many people here have off-center sinks and are happy with them. If you current sink doesn't bother you now, I doubt your new sink (even if it is an apron) will bother you.

As to the functionality of a 36" vs 33" LS, I think your KD is correct. There will not only be more room inside the 36" LS, but it will also be easier to get things in/out of it b/c the opening is bigger.

BTW Raehelen, we had a standard LS (metal center pole) in our old kitchen for 12-1/2 years and never had a problem with it. We stored all our pots & pans in it so the items were not exactly light-weight. I think you may have gotten a "lemon"...is it under warranty? Can you get it replaced?

The sink cabinet is 36. We alternated between 33 and 36. We'd have to go down to 30 to gain enough to do anything with because it's centered under a window, and won't go down that much. I think I'm leaning toward asymmetrical and going to the 18" trash. Doing something to get a bigger space on the front/sink wall would be a nice-to-have, but getting the 18" so I can get recycling into that cabinet too will save me that space elsewhere. And I like having that extra couple inches along the side of the susan for cutting boards. I teach math, so I had WAY too much fun calculating/estimating the area on each of the susans, the width of the opening, etc. I scared the KD a bit. I think the opening on the 33 would be about 12.5", on the asymmetrical about 15", and the 36 about 16.5". I think we're ordering cabinets in two days. Still open to comments.

I think the center drain siligranite sink is undermount only whereas the offset drain one can be either undermount or drop-in. If you're planning to do undermount then it's really just personal preference. I have mine offset (and undermounted) and like it that way. I can load up dishes on one side and still access my drain and disposal. Without a disposal it probably makes even less of a difference.

"Our plans didn't show the window..." This is, indeed, a cautionary tale. In this day and age of CAD programs which give you total viewing options there is no excuse for not providing all views of the proposed project. If your KD isn't providing 3-D views, keep looking. H2O2 - Stages sinks can be installed with the drain either way. When the DW is on the left, the deep side of the sink need to be left and visa-versa.

Thank you all for your replies! I don’t have my heart set on that light or even Edison bulbs necessarily - it was purely an example of a light that I “thought” might work since it was wide enough to cover that spot on the wall. Honestly right now with other projects that we have going on, I really don’t know if want to go down the road of cutting drywall, moving the box, patching, etc. especially considering that we plan on replacing our cabinets in the near future. But I’ll show your comments to my husband and see what he thinks since he’d be doing the work! I do have a window pane mirror that I will try but I still kind of think I’d like a light of some sort. The space between the cabinets is about 42”. There was also a straight wooden valance between the cabinets that we just removed as well. I figured that was a dated look and needed to go too. I like the idea of the larger feature asymmetrical style fixture a lot. The 2nd one - Charleen - is pretty cool! I’ll definitely look into that. And that wooden shelf will go too (forgot to mention that initially) although I am open to using more stylish shelves if I needed to fill the space. I even mulled over the idea of putting a single light where the box is (off-center) and then decorating around it with maybe floating shelves or something to fill the space. I know, I know - probably a bad idea but it was a passing thought. At this point just about anything would be better than the Hollywood lights! Hers another pic of the over sink area if it helps. We had a similar problem and resolved it by going with a a 36" supersusan and a 33" sink base. It sounds like that might not work with the apron sink. I agree with others that the 36" supersusan will be much more functional. The most important thing isn't the extra space, it's the second consideration Buehl pointed out - the ease of getting things in/out with the bigger opening. I definitely would not want a narrower opening than the one I have now on my 36" susan.

I have the same situation. I ended up getting no SS in one of my corner base cabinets and making it 36" on one side and 33" on the other in order to have my sink centered. I figured why should I spend so much money on a 33" SS when I would have limited use of it, so I'll just have a shelf in it. I have two more 36" base corner cabinets that I put SS's in. My existing sink window that is staying put has a wood divider between 2 casement windows. If my new sink is not centered, it would be more obvious because of the divider. If you don't have a divider, I don't think 3" is a big deal. Mind you, for the past 18 years my current sink has been off centered by 3" and I never even thought about it!
Either way you can't go wrong. Good luck with your decision.

I had the same delima in our remodel. Our sink was already about 1 1/2" off center and in order to get a SS, it would move over 3" more. I didn't hesitate though because I needed the extra storage. I got rid of the upper cabinets and needed more space wherever i could get it. I have a large single sink, so I don't think you notice it as much anyways. I love my kitchen, small and all, and wouldn't change moving the sink.

I had the same dilemma and went for off-center, too, to accommodate my pull-out trash without it opening into a doorway. One consideration I had was that my window has a large 8" center stile, so putting the sink off-center means I can actually look out the window instead of facing off with a piece of douglas fir. I put in an apron-front farm sink too. A hasty mid-progress pic:

When it comes down to it, a kitchen is a functional space, and things like perfect centering are really secondary to making the design as useful as possible for your workstyle. I might be influenced by my own "it's an old house so nothing fits perfectly anyway" mentality, but honestly I doubt anyone will even notice the sink placement if it's clearly a happy, functional workspace for you.

I think the apron-front sink will make it much more obvious that the sink is off-center. Perhpas a regular sink would be the best option.

If you decide to go without the apron front, mine is a fireclay undermount by rohl. I love it. Mine is shown above in a previous post.
