Extra deep sink: problems with garburator?
Comments (7)I just ran into this problem yesterday - I'm doing a gut rehab of my kitchen (now about 95% done), and I'm using an undermount sink that's 9" deep on one side, 7" deep on the other. I wanted the disposal on the deeper side of the sink, but since I didn't plan for that from the beginning of the rehab, the plumbing (which was totally redone) came in at a standard height, came through the cabinet at a standard height, and then wasn't low enough to allow the disposal to drain properly from the big bowl. So, to my chagrin, the disposal is on the small bowl. I thought about a lot of things before the reno, but i never thought of this! So, a word to the wise: if you want a deep sink, plan ahead on the plumbing....See MoreExtra row of cabinets under peninsula? Useful or too much??
Comments (12)Thanks for all of the input. You're all raising issues that I'm having trouble resolving. The problem is, we have bought our retirement home, and haven't lived it in it long, so not sure how it will all play out. In fact, I am NOT living there -- just Husband and the dog are in SC, and I'm still in a small apartment back in Ohio waiting to retire in August. It is a long, narrow kitchen, 12x33, which will be partially open to the dining room. There is room on the other side of the peninsula, as we just have a small seating/sunroom area, so we can end the kitchen where we want, and if I don't do these cabs, I might expend the area inside the U by another foot. Leela, I knew I would have to bend over to get stuff, but I didn't think about having to move the chairs, too. Good point! And rehelen, the inability to reach across to clean is another point that is pushing me away. Although, Kam, you are right -- I envisioned wrapping gifts and cutting out sewing projects on the expanse. mpagmom, I LOVE your solution, and although it wouldn't work with a peninsula, I am doing something on a smaller scale on the island -- I think your kitchen was my "inspiration" for that! homebuyer, I hope to post plans and pics soon, but I am kind of twixt and between now and don't have access to everything I need, so still in the "gathering ideas" and pondering them stage. I think I am leaning against them at this point -- the "goal" would be to get rid of the "stuff" instead of building more places to store it! however, with only a 1 car garage, and no basement, we are a bit storage challenged. I'm also getting rid of the china cabinet in the dining room, so I need to store that stuff (but I am gaining cabinet, wet bar, and pantry space). However, if anyone really thinks the cabinets are a great idea and would be an asset, I'd like to know before I make an irrevocable decision....See MoreUsable space in 18" deep cabinet vs. 21" deep cabinet?
Comments (11)One thing with a 10" overhang is that you're not saving aisle space because stool legs splay wider than the seats for stability. Your real usable aisle space is from the stool feet over, regardless of whether they're covered by counter or not. On the plus side, maybe you might as well create an overhang generous enough to tuck them all the way under? It'd not only be more comfortable but look a lot better and be safer. Of course, it also means you need to choose and measure stools before making your decision. These tradeoffs are all very personal decisions, but, knowing how much even shallow storage holds, mine would be to look to the cabinets for the extra inches needed to make this work. I purchased ready-made Ikea 12" drawers for the top row of a line of 12" deep bottoms, with shelves below, so I would imagine drawer and sliding shelf mechanisms are available in a number of depths. If needed, I'd also plan storage for the Christmas dishes and the 3-element slow cooker used maybe twice a year, or whatever as needed, somewhere else in the house. Comments (35)Ergonomics are an individual thing so It might be worth standing there to see how it works for you. I think there is more to it than just your height. I am 5'3". How long are your arms and how many dishes do you do? I do hand wash quite a few dishes and not a fan of a deep sink. If you are bending over at all to touch the bottom, it can be hard on your back. My sister and I are about the same height but built differently in that her arms are longer so depth doesn't bother her as much. I also like an apron sink that brings the sink as close as possible. This sounds counter intuitive but one display kitchen had a higher counter top which brought the sink up a little and that was more comfortable for me. My favorite sinks have been old farm sinks with a built in drainer. They are maybe 6 inches deep....See MoreUser
