Who knows KraftMaid and Cooktop Cabinets?

History: Redoing our kitchen and have 2 tier island with cooktop w/ downdraft in it. We're stepping out the cabinet holding cooktop by 3" so the downdraft doesn't hit the 2nd tier of island counter. We're using an in-line blower in basement instead of blower in cabinet to save space to drawers.

Question: Can I use a 27" cabinet to hold the cooktop so I can get bigger drawers in there? Dealer said KraftMaid said can't use 27" cabinet. Must use 24" downdraft cabinet and pull out 3". Help!

Do you mean a 27" D. cabinet? Are you putting drawers under the cooktop w/ a downdraft ? What do you mean by bigger drawers ? Width or depth (front to back) or height ?
Kraft Maid is a semi-custom line. They're only going to do what they can do. This may be the place for a custom cabinet.
I think it's a good idea to step it out 3 " if you have the room, but I'm not quite sure I'm getting your question. Sorry. Do you have a layout ?

I'm not really understanding when you say "stepping out by 3". We just bought a Kraft Maid kitchen. Several KDs told us we had to have at least a 33" wide cabinet to accommodate the cook top. 36" cooktop cabinets are much preferred but our island was just too long. We tweaked it where we could. It is difficult to install our Jenn-Aire downdraft cooktop in 33". The 33" cabinet has a short (back to front) drawer in the top but no shelves or drawers underneath. The width of the front part of our 2 teir island is 24" and the back is 12". We will hang the counter top over the front part of the island by a couple inches, I think, to give more plate room at the seating part in the back. If the cooktop downdraft works correctly, the steam, heat, etc. will get sucked down before harming the back tier's counter top. The downdraft is aligned perpendicular to the length of the island so I don't really understand how yours would "hit" the 2nd teir. I don't think the cooktop is anywhere near the 24" back to front that it needs to set into so there will be adequate space all around it.

About half of my kitchen is the same Brookhaven cabinets that sarahandbray has. They are wonderful -- well made adn beautifully finished. Since I just saw a thread about cabinet depth, I will point out that standard wall cabinet depth on Brookhaven is 13" and allows you to fit larger plates and bowls in your upper cabinets. Don't get trapped into thinking that wood is necessarily better than composite materials. There are different grades of wood (generally plywood) and MDF, poarticle board or other composites. I've had plenty of plywood around here for home and school projects. In fact, there is a sheet sitting under concrete blocks on my driveway because it had some serious warping issues. Plywood is very vulnerable to warping. I can also tell you that in the two years since I had my cabinets installed, I have had several water issues -- my plumber didn't connect the prep sink properly. I had a leak inside the cabinet. Even though I mopped it up and thought I caught it fairly quickly, the bottom of the cabinet bubbled in places. No -- it wasn't MDF or particle board. This was inside my all wood Woodmode cabients on the island. On the other hand, I had water run through the pan of my rangetop and down into the cabinet belwo when someone turned their back on the new and fast flowing potfiller. I was sure there would be a problem, but you would never know. Similarly, the main sink and faucet were also not connected properly (the plumber was the source of the bigger pains in my remodel). I have had water in the bottom of that cabinet at least three times before everything was caught and hopefully fixed. No problems there either. Both the rangetop and main sink cabinets are Brookhaven. Another thing -- my KD ordered the cabinets on the end of each run with wood sides -- not because they wood was better but because she wanted to assure that the finish was the same on the ends as on the front (I have seen the two materials with the same finish and they do look different). Overall construction and finish should be more important that generic terms like "wood" or "MDF". I have heard of Crystal here but don't know anything about them personally. I don't get the imprssion that they are on par with Brookhaven though. If Brookhaven and Kraftmaid are within a few hundred dollars, I have no doubt that I would pick Brookhaven -- for the finish (which also has a lot to do with how well your cabinets last over the years), the added inch of depth and the overall quality. Plus, you have the Woodmode company behind you if you have any problems.

Do NOT use Home Depot or Thomasville. Home Depot forgot my toekick drawers despite being asked if she included them 5 different times. She said they were ordered. When my cabinets came in there were no drawers. I immediately went back to HD and the same designer lied and said my cabinets were too heavy for the drawers- i had pictures ftom the website with my ordered configuration. 2nd problem is Thomasville - they have shipped defective product 4 times now. Their shipper lost 1 shipment for a week and today they never showed up with the 4th attempt to give me usable cabinets. Even with a specialist agent from Thomasville I can't get this resolved. I ordered the cabinets 8 months ago. I could have special ordered cabinets for the same amount of money and had my kitchen back together by now. RUN to anyone else although I've been told Lowe's is even worse.

I knew where the cabinets were purchased from before I read the entire post and I completely understand this story, but it is only half of it. Unfortunately the customer with good intentions, also doesn't know the whole story coming from KM's view and contract responsibilities with Home Depot. I have worked on thousands of kitchens and KM is a great Cabinet and company. Just don't buy them from homeowner Depot. There IS a difference. I have my very own bathroom from HD in KM cabinetry and then 3 yrs later my kitchen was done with KM but from John's Lumber where the trim carpenter purchases from. HUGE difference in QC. And this is VERY true with ALL big box products. As we PROFESSIONALS say big box product is good ( if you can call it that) only if your selling the house right away. Unfortunately you can only learn this first hand by actually tearing a product apart and comparing internal components.

I have had several good experiences with Lowes in the past (or else we wouldn't have asked them to do a detail for this installation). I am not arguing that they can have good, quality people. I just knew after the feedback from the detail that this individual doesn't need to be near my cabinet. I am sure he would be more than able to install the oven, as that is what he was actually hired to do, but the cabinet is the first step and my biggest concern right now. They may be willing to install the oven still if I can get the cabinet taken care of! I'm sorry if anything I said implied I thought little of Lowes subcontractors or employees.

Granite Girl and forgottensong: Thanks for your comments. I don't know how to attach a picture. I do mean 27" deep and 36" W for the cooktop cabinet. cooktop is 36". All cabinets will be 24" deep. If the Dacor cooktop is 21" D and raised vent is at least 2"D, that's 22"D. I don't know how that will leave enough room for the vent to raise without coming into contact with the 2nd tier of the countertop unless you step out the cabinet 3". So I don't think we have a choice other than using the 27" cabinet. With the in-line blower we're using (ILHSB8), the depth of the raised vent (RV36S) is only 4 5/8" inside of the cabinet. I would think that would leave about 22" for a drawer. Dealer says we can only use the 24" cabinet.

Oh, I didn't get that you mean that the downdraft raises up. If the cooktop is 21"D and raised vent is at least 2"D, that's 23" not 22". It seems you'd have an inch left over with the normal 24" deep cabinets. Is it that the second teir extends over the lower teir? That would present a problem. How will they manage to add the 3"?

we just had our downdraft and cooktop put in.....countertops went in this week also........

my KM designer told us to use a 36" sink base to hold the 36 inch cooktop and downdraft vent.......fits just right......

Who knows KraftMaid and Cooktop Cabinets?
