Contractor is telling me that tile backsplashes don't hold up

My contractor is trying to tell me that tile backsplashes, although beautiful, don't hold up well over time. His first comment is that the grout line where the granite meets the tile is a problem area and can get dirty, crack etc. over time. My response was "epoxy grout". I don't even know if that's right, but I remember reading about it enough times in the bath forum. Anyway it shut him up for a minute. Then he goes on to say that tile is especially bad behind ranges/cooktops (you know the place that so many of so many of my TKO friends put their beautiful designs...) because the grout lines get greasy and dirty.

He would like to see a 4-6 inch granite backsplash with either tile or just paint above it, and behind the range he would suggest going all the way up with the granite. To be honest I was a little concerned about the grout line between the granite and tile backsplash, but I didn't like the look of granite all the way up the wall. What do you guys think?
