New appliances delivered. Not sure if I made a mistake with the black cooktop on the range instead of the stainless top. My model is available in both.

Please share your opinions... Thanks!!!

ETA: We will be recessing the plugs for the fridge & range so they will be set back more. And wow, bad lighting my cabinets are natural oak :)

I mentioned it in another thread, but I'll elaborate on my experience a bit more. When I initially started my search, I was looking at BlueStar and had not heard of the Culinarian. I went to BlueStar's site and got the names of some local distributors. There were only two within a reasonable distance from me, and they were owned by the same company. I got a quote from that dealer and wanted to validate the price by getting a quote from another dealer. It's the same thing I do when purchasing a car, doing remodeling, or any other sizable expenditure. Shopping around is a standard practice for most, I'm sure. I called a few online and remote brick and mortar stores and they told me the same thing; BlueStar prohibited them from giving me a quote because they were not in my region. The best they could do as allude to another product that might be in the same price range. Certainly this is how BlueStar attempts to control pricing, and I understand why they want to do that, but Apple is able to do the same thing while not restricting your retail purchase options. If I prefer not to shop at the Apple Store, I can still buy a MacBook Pro from Best Buy, Amazon, etc and the price will be within a few dollars of each other. What recourse would I have had if my local dealer had been a jerk and I still wanted to buy a BlueStar? Drive or fly to another state and purchase it? Sorry, but I shouldn't be made to jump through hoops and it really rubbed me the wrong way. While I was definitely willing to spend the money on a premium product, I didn't want to throw money away and I didn't want to get taken advantage of. With Capital, I was able to call several different sources and verify that I was getting a reasonable price. When I say that it was a matter of principal for me, it's because I didn't appreciate BlueStar artificially limiting my options. Ultimately, I ended up buying the Culinarian from the same local dealer that gave me the first BlueStar quote and the cost difference between the Culinarian and BlueStar was negligible. I was ready to buy a BlueStar when I first started calling around and, had the remote dealers I called been able to quote me a price in line with what the local dealer gave me, I would probably have a BlueStar in my kitchen today. Since that didn't happen, I ended up discovering the Culinarian and researching both products more extensively over several weeks, on this site and others, as well as checking them out in person at the dealer. There were, and still are, some things I preferred about the BlueStar (primarily the grates and the appearance to a lesser extent), but overall I preferred the Culinarian, and BlueStar's sales policy played a role in that.

I think your decision to cancel was wise. You will be much better off if you choose your appliances based upon features and performance criteria that match your needs, and not simply one manufacturer's. I do not have any experience with Viking, per se, and cannot comment on their performance or reliability from that standpoint, but there have been plenty of problems reported with them here. That anecdotal info would be something I would take into consideration, personally. Stainless and custom color options on many of today's appliances, as well as the option for custom, cabinet-faced, built-ins, pretty much allow cooks to pick and choose what they want with the knowledge that it will all go together fine. For instance, our kitchen features Miele Speed Oven and Coffee system, Bluestar range, GE Monogram range hood, Bosch Dishwasher, and an LG fridge. About the only matching I tried to do was after I saw the Miele speed oven for the first time paired with the coffee system. That was a look my wife and I liked. Turns out the Miele speed oven has become a real "go-to" device around here (I don't even turn on the big oven unless I am making pizza or something huge like turkey) So yeah, I would focus on getting the best example of each appliance you need rather than trying to shoehorn all of one maker's wares into your new kitchen. Sandra - It's really good looking, but it's BIG, and it's DARK ... most of your other things, like the frames on the pictures over the sofa, seem to be light and small-scale. Not a problem: put some big interesting things on the glass shelves to take advantage of them, use larger scaled dark-framed pictures over the couch. A slightly worn oriental carpet on the floor and VIOLA, you are done. Toss some pillows that bring out carpet colors on the sofa when you get around to it. I have a china cabinet that was just too dark inside. I taped some pretty hand-made Japanese paper to the back of it to lighten up the wood. Perhaps using a bit of wallpaper or fabric to cover the mirror would make you more comfortable. I agree with magnaverde - I don't see "Tuscan", whatever that is, in your rooms. It's comfortably casually modern and throwing in something traditional or country or Moorish isn't a problem. I firmly agree with his "if I like it, it works" attitude.

sorry, but the brick is the oddman out here. why doesn't he want to paint it? Romabio is simple and easy to do, and good for the brick. the tv needs to be mounted to the wall with a hole cut in the back to run the cords down. try something like this across the wall. do the front of the benches like shown here and just expose the brick below the firebox. plenty of how-to's on how to do this. those tangle of cords and computer monitor look on that tv does you no favors! It's a great spot though! you just need some tweaking. I like maureens idea. redo the trim behind the bookcases and the molding, paint it all black. I would remove that chair rail molding on the wall portion and do a plain wall, or try some board and batten or even wood slat molding if you like the white, then paint it all white, do some beadboard paneling behind the bookcases and paint those a contrast color. above the mantle surround do some other type of wood trim molding from side to side. mount the tv like this mirror Or, remove that weird mantle, and do a wood mantle like this. If he still doesn't want to paint the brick, then just fir it out, attach some cement board, and do a diff tile or slab or even shiplap or some other wood trim can you take a picture from the front angle, dead on , and i'll play around w/the photoshop?

I don't think the black stove top looks out of place at all.

I am currently waiting for cabinet construction (hoping for installation next week), and we've chosen almost exactly the same color and style (without the "eyebrow" on the uppers). And the floor we've chosen looks like your as well! What is it?

I actually prefer some black on SS, so therefore, I like the range with the black top over all SS. On the same note, I like how the SS of the microwave is broken up by the glass.

I am faced with buying new applicances in the near future and am torn between white and SS. When I walk through the appliances, I love the ranges BECAUSE they usually have some black on them (i.e. black glass doors, tops, etc). I think I will have a really hard time committing to a LARGE BULKY ALL SS refrigerator :). They seem to be the one piece that most people question (a very large surface to keep shiny/clean).

I don't think the DW will bother me quiet as much, because it will be on a lower level.

My counters are formica (my DH made them 12 years ago when we remodeled the kitchen), they will be replaced next year with granite (we will use a similar granite). My tile is porcelain and the invoice says Antracite Lito. Hope that helps.

I think the black keeps your kitchen from looking like a spaceport wannabe - so, good choice!

Tuesday - the fridge we got (Whirlpool Gold) is stainless on the front and black on the sides. I like it, although that's not the reason we chose it; it was just a nice bonus.

I love the mix of black and stainless. I was amazed to see your before picture with the small braided rug in front of your sink which goes so well with your new appliance color scheme.

The black not only looks great, it will also be easier to keep clean, an added bonus! Your kitchen is looking wonderful and the granite will be the icing on the cake when you do it.

Thank you so much. You all are so sweet! I feel so much better about my choices. I lived without a microwave for 3 weeks to make sure I did my research, got the best prices etc...my husband always says it takes me 2 weeks to get adjusted to anything new so I guess he is right. A couple new accessories and it will feel like mine again :)

I think it is lovely, and I also noticed the stylish rug. My new gas rangetop will be black on top, glass cooktops typically include black as do many micros and ovens. Your floor, cabinet, and appliance choices would look great with a variety of granites and backsplashes, you'll have fun choosing those!
