I think it is a gorgeous piece of furniture and goes well with your sofa and chair. I would remove or cover the mirrored section so that it has less of a china cabinet feel. But gel stain or paint - no way.

I don't know what the exact style of that piece is - which is a good thing. I don't think you want a piece of furniture that big to scream Mediterranean or any other style. It can be a backdrop to touches around the room that have a Tuscan feel. Nice CL find!

I think it's great. You're just having a WWIT moment; (What Was I Thinking ???) which always happens to me when I go for a big change.

Your beautiful cabinet just needs to have some things in it to soften the hard edges. That will be easy. Books, family photos, objects that have a story attached to them, even a couple of plants or dried flowers would be great. Then you need a rug in front of it. As far as the style, I think it works just fine in your home.

The mirrored part might be a concern if it is reflecting light IRL as much as in the photo. Once you get things in there, it may be fine. You could always cover the mirrored surfaces with some grass cloth or other wood veneer like the rest of the cabinet.

I think it's a great find. Have fun making it your own.

Vert tasteful piece of furniture! To get the mediterannean feel, add wrought iron. Such as a topper over your sofa pictures or a wrought iron coffee table with matching end table. The prints above your sofa could have a more Tuscan feel to them and red or rust throw pillows.....your headed in the right direction. :0)

I agree that it is a beautiful piece and you are lucky to find it! Don't think of the hardgoods such as furniture as setting the style, but the accents you place in the room. You can still easily get the tuscan feel you want with 'other' things you place in the room. The furniture is a mere background. FWIW, BM Tuscany would look great with you upholstery!

OK, first off, "mistake" is such a harsh word. Don't be in such a hurry to sort & label your efforts as "successes" & "failures". Labels are for cans.

And speaking of labels, I don't see anything--and I mean anything--in the photos of what was already in your room that suggest, even vaguely, the desription "Tuscan" or "Mediterranean", but that's really not a problem, since even without the trendy stylistic label, the dark finishes your room should accept your new cabinet just fine. And if you follow the excellent suggestion to cover up the glitzy faceted mirror in the back of the center cabinet with more leather or suede, or even a coat of paint in a color related to but darker and stronger than what's on your walls, it should blend right in.

Meanwhwile, turn off the inner critic. That's what hussbands are for. Besides, the bad habit of second-guessing yourself, if left untreated, can eventually lead to total decorating paralysis, leaving you perpetually undecided, unable to make the slightest decision for fear of making another expensive mistake. And husbands really hate that. Never second guess yourself.

Love the piece, love the color it is now. I agree about the centre part with the mirrors needs a bit of work but otherwise looks fantastic, no mistake made here.

Why not just re-think the look of the room & go more traditional? Your upholstered pieces are traditional-looking. Love your little chess table. That's traditional looking too! Know you didn't ask, but it would be cute next to your chair. Find a larger coffee table on your CL for in front of the sofa.

What I see emerging (fwiw) is a very sophisticated but comfy, study/den/library/hang-out space. Going in a more traditional direction would just mean different accessories, as far as I can see. I think the cabinet is outstanding and your best-looking piece. It's well-worth creating a look around. What a find!

I never second guess myself on CL finds- I know up front that if it doesn't work for me I can change it up a bit and sell it on CL! Thats my story and I'm stickin to it

Add some "Tuscan" style elements to the shelves -- perhaps a wine jug or olive oil jar or two. If there is room on top -- perhaps add some large, chunky wood candlesticks. Just a few elements can really suggest a style!

Add some great decor books about the region -- perhaps "Villa Design" by Betty Lou Phillps. Just to name one! There are so many lovely decor books about this style! And such a wonderful addition to any bookshelves!

Add a dark woven basket or two around the room for added texture!

It's really good looking, but it's BIG, and it's DARK ... most of your other things, like the frames on the pictures over the sofa, seem to be light and small-scale.

Not a problem: put some big interesting things on the glass shelves to take advantage of them, use larger scaled dark-framed pictures over the couch. A slightly worn oriental carpet on the floor and VIOLA, you are done. Toss some pillows that bring out carpet colors on the sofa when you get around to it.

I have a china cabinet that was just too dark inside. I taped some pretty hand-made Japanese paper to the back of it to lighten up the wood. Perhaps using a bit of wallpaper or fabric to cover the mirror would make you more comfortable.

I agree with magnaverde - I don't see "Tuscan", whatever that is, in your rooms. It's comfortably casually modern and throwing in something traditional or country or Moorish isn't a problem. I firmly agree with his "if I like it, it works" attitude.

Thank you all so much for the vote of confidence. I like the idea of covering the glass with leather. And the ideas for Tuscan/Old World stuff to put on the bookcases is really helpful too. Once I find a few things I'll come back here to ask you all how to best arrange them, since I'm really stinky at doing that kind of stuff. I can find things I like, but I always have a hard time pulling a room together.

I just got a call that my mom fell. Again. The last two falls have resulted in a knee replacement and a hip replacement. She's only been out of rehab for two weeks since the hip replacement! This time she shattered the bone between the new hip and knee. *sigh* Hard to see her breaking down like this.

Anyhow, all that to say I'll be sure to use the time down in No. VA to do a little shopping between keeping an eye on my mom. Thanks to all!

Love it! I say keep the mirror because it will beautifully reflect all glass objects you put in there, whether you add figurines, bowls, plates,..whatever.

The dark wood is a perfect contrast with the color of the walls.
