Do I need to tip furniture delivery guys: Here Now!!

They're delivering my kitchen table and chairs as I write. Do I need to tip them?

yes. just as long as they are polite and don't damage anything!

Orchid_pixie, 1. Buy a heavy duty tiller, if you decide to try to cultivate your soil. Don't do what I did and get the "cheap" $188 model at Walmart. It will only leave you $188 poorer & shaking your fist at the sky as you realize you wasted your money on a puny tiller that got you nowhere (and which, to boot, is hard to start unless you have the upper body strength of a titan). 2. I too, love gardenias & have been trying to grow them, with varied success. So far I've killed 1 1/2 plants (I would say two, but I won't know if the last one is dead until it warms up & I can tell if there are any remaining signs of life). Of the plants that have survived my attempts to grow them, I currently have two indoor veitchii (one at home, one at work -- I'm conducting an experiment to see which lasts the longest before dying horribly, or preferably, which blooms first!) and four frost-proof gardenias that I bought at Pike's and planted outside in my front garden bed. As for the frost-proof, they seem to be doing okay, and given that you're in the northern part of GA, I would give those a try before buying some of the less cold-hardy varieties. However, whatever you decide to do, do yourself a favor first and read the suicidal gardenia thread I'm posting for you below. Tipping furniture delivery personnel?

Not really complaining, just stating a fact. I'd rather get nothing than one of the following two after slaving away at a great job: * Oh, I've had repair people like you before, it's amazing what you can all do. (the merely average) * Now, if you crouch down here, and have that lamp off, and lean a little bit toward the corner, here, wait, open the curtains halfway, see, right there, it looks a little different. (the inconspicuous vs. the imperceptible) I think the worst was the lady that followed me around with a flashlight looking at the base of a table I was working on. "M'am, just how often do you or your guests get on all fours with a flashlight and look at the table apron????" Oh, well, all in a day's work. ;-) I work in everything from multi-million dollar estates to low-rent apartments. Money is not correlated to grace and respect. nc furniture... damaged furn not noticed til delivery guys left

I had a similar situation. My sofa came with a chipped (small) back leg. I noticed it and the delivery guys had these "clay" thing that got molded into the chipped part, once there it would harden and "never" come off---according to them. So fine...I like you figured was willing to let it go at that. BUT ..when they turned the sofa over, the guys left a red-brown stain on the sofa arms--and then he tried to clean it with windex! While cleaning we noticed a seam rip on both arms. He advised to keep the sofa(apparently...this is the way it's done), take pictures and email to customer service. They would exchange the sofa. Well after he left, we did this and emailed. Turns out they (FLS) does not do that, but they would pick up the sofa, fix it and return it..no charge. Of course, now a whole summer has gone by and I am still waiting. I also noticed a rip in the cloth under one of our ottomans..which they said they would fix. (this was noticed ..after I signed the papers). My advice is to take good digital pictures....inform them of the dent and whatever else you are willing to overlook. REMIND them how much you have spent,return customer etc.... I would work directly with the head customer service person on this. Keep following up. AND mention the fact that you have heard that other furniture companies do not charge...so why should you have to pay. I am always amazed that we consumers spend so much money on fine furniture. (they follow us like hound dogs when we are shopping) and then when something comes damaged they don't even want to acknowledge you. Customer service has just gone out the door. Sorry have to vent, I was in customer service over 13 years..and it bugs me. Good luck. But one thing I know...is you have to be persistent.

So I'm a day late on this but I'll chime in and say yes, I tip, if the service is good and the folks are polite etc. I figure the $20 or whatever means more to them than to me, and I'm lucky that I'm not the one hauling heavy stuff for a living. That's purely personal and no reflection on someone else's tipping or not. The exception? When I waited months for my gorgeous, big, heavy desk to be delivered from NC... This desk with hutch weighs several hundred lbs. The delivery guys: one was about 90 lbs, the other had a broken foot. They asked my husband (who had just had hip surgery) and me (5 mo's pregnant at the time) to help them carry it, otherwise they would send it back to NC! It ended up in the garage until we could hire someone local to carry it upstairs. Can I just say for the record that those guys did NOT get a tip?!

no, you don't *need* to. they are paid a salary for doing their job. they are not considered 'tipped' employees like waiters or pizza delivery guys.

but, obviously, you can if you want to. or believe that they went above and beyond the call of duty in some way.

I always do. Usually $10 each for something easy (like a table and chairs) $20 each for something heinous...like the washer and dryer.

I often don't if the delivery is straightforward and uncomplicated. But I tipped the delivery guy who brought my refrigerator this morning $20 because he had to push this monster up the hill of my driveway alone and disconnect my garage door and reconnect it. The delivery itself took almost an hour.

My apologies but this is an assumption. The guys who delivered our furniture many moons ago were off-the-book friends of the store owners' son. They got 50% of the delivery charge and whatever tips they earned.
Another store I used to do business through had a similar policy.
It would be unfair to say all delivery people are paid employees of the furniture store they are delivering for. That is unless it's a brand like Levitz or Ashley.

Sorry for the delayed thanks for your advice. Turns out I had no cash in my house (should have planned ahead a little better but frankly the tipping never crossed my mind until they were in my house) so I sent them off with coffe, water and snacks. I felt badly...they were really nice and very careful. Next time I'll be prepared. Anyway, here are the pics Iris:

May I suggest a nice letter to the manager/owner of the furniture store letting them know how the service was for you? It's not a tip per se but it is a nice substitute and could very well make their day!
