retrofit older blum tandem plus with blumotion

I'm new to the forum, but have read the posts about retrofitting blumotion on tandem drawer slides, and there are some knowledgeable folks here!

My question is can I retrofit blumotion to the blum tandem plus slides already in our kitchen? The slides are full extension dating to 2002 or 2003. They say Tandem Plus on them. I bought a retrofit blumotion for the 562 series (T70.3150), but it doesn't fit - there aren't holes where the installation diagram shows there should be. Are my slides just too old? I was hoping to get blumotion without having to replace the otherwise well performing slides. Any suggestions appreciated!

The T70.3150 should fit with the 562 series. I purchased mine at A&H Turf Specialties and after reading off the complete # on the tandem plus glides that's what they sent. Give them a call.

Make sure you're putting them in correctly as I put several in backwards. Once you get the hang of it they clip in quickly. One tip is when you get to the bottom drawers unscrew the front of the tandem plus, clip on the T70.3150 and then screw the track back in. Otherwise the blumotion is a bear to clip on.

A&H assured me I wouldn't have to cut the backs of the drawers but they were wrong. I spent $25 on a Black and Decker jig saw and notched the drawer 4.75" on each side (NOT the 3.75" the Blum diagram shows) and everything went smoothly.

Hmm, there are no model numbers at all on my slides, and no holes for the blumotion piece to snap into. Am I missing something? Where are these supposed to clip on? thanks.

I have Hettich softclose for all my drawers. I had assumed they were going to be Blum and I was concerned when I found out they were Hettich, because I had never heard of them. But the cabinet maker assured me that they were arguably better than Blum. He showed me an older and a newer Blum slide and showed me where Blum has changed their slides over the last few years to reduce cost. Mainly shortening the full extension mount. The Hettich felt heftier in hand. I followed up with my own research and the feedback was very positive. My Rev-a-Shelf trash pullout uses Hettich too. The Hettich slides are very smooth. I don't have Hettich for door hinges though so I can comment on those. My cabinet maker used Salice. He said he liked them better than Blum. I didn't ask why he didn't use Hettich for the doors.

Stpindell, Thank you for your post and Ia m glad your problem was solved by your cabinetmaker. I just picked up a coffee table that I had made from a customer to fix this very problem- I had used self closing side mount slides due to the fact that the drawers are so small in height Blumotion wouldn't work. It is being used by an older person and I agree that it is hard to pull the drawer open. The work great the other way. This is the first time this has happened to my in over 35 years and thousands of drawer installs. So, I am going to try and "fix" this my grinding off that catch tab on the slide mechanism to "soften" the pull without risking a total malfunction. If it works I will post how I did it. Otherwise I am going to replace them with regular slides. All on my dime and time. No one should have to fight to get their drawer open. Yes and it is our responsibility as pros to communicate and do a great show and tell with the customer. Note: Although the home owner is the final customer--I did this for a designer here in Scottsdale Arizona-she being a pro has given me time to fix before the home owner sees it and moves in. That is a great designer to plan in her project management risks and small fixes in her timeline.

I had just posted the same question when I noticed this thread. Thank you Craig for responding. I am still confused. I have full extension undermount slides which are not Blum. They look similar but have a yellow attachment. Do I need to replace the entire mechanism to get soft close? That would probably cost about the $65 our cabinet maker wanted to begin with. Is there any way to do this inexpensively?

Blumotion is the glide system that lets the drawers open and close. The difference is in the drawer box construction. Metabox: uses powder coated metal drawer boxes. This is the cheapest option for Blum. Most custom cabinet companies do not use this. This is similar to Ikea boxes. Tandem: companies typically use hardwood dovetailed boxes and uses the glides by Blum. This is the typical American cabinet system that you see with typical mid to high-end cabinets in America. You only see dovetailed wooden drawers when you open and close the drawers. Tandembox: DO NOT use hardwood dovetailed boxes. The sides of boxes are stainless steel modules from Blum and the cabinet maker only makes the bottom and back that fits the Blum SS hardware sides and bottom. This is similar to what Ikea drawers look like but the components are made of SS instead of powder coated steel. The components are much higher grade than the metaboxes. This is more common with European cabinets. In America, there is typically an upcharge from Tandem to Tandembox. (for some companies, the charge may be the same...) This is not common in America. Tandembox Intivo: the drawer boxes use SS and tempered glass. Tempered glass is expensive. (I have only seen a few houses with this system ever!) I have no idea what the up charge is. I think it is quite a bit higher. If you go to higher end cabinet showrooms that have European style cabinets, they should be able to show you the difference between Tandembox and Tandem. They all have similar opening and closing mechanism; Blumotion. The drawers give you completely different feel when you open and close since what you see is SS versus wood. The difference is really the esthetics, not drawer mechanism.

I contacted Blum, and it turns out the tandem plus slides we have are 562 series, but predate blumotion and can't be retrofit. I'll have to buy new slides if we want blumotion. Bummer! Thanks for your help though.

Talk about a timely thread! As I was wiping down the kitchen to get ready for the granite install tomorrow the draw slides caught my attention...did he really put in Blumotion as was specified? hmm.. Blum Tandem Plus and then I see your thread. He only installed Tandem Plus Blumotion on one of the drawers! What's going on? Do you think he's 'adding' Blumotion or did he just 'forget' ??? What IS the difference anyway?
