Countertop ledge 2 cm or 3 cm?

We are going to have a white carrara marble ledge in the kitchen that overlooks the living/dining room. We wanted to get 2 cm honed stone but the fabricator and its distributors only has 3 cm polished. I know I cannot abide by polished marble so I am going to spend the extra money to have whatever marble we get be honed. But I am less set on whether we go for the lighter look of the 2 cm or not. Do you think there is a big visual difference between the two? Enough to pay the extra money to have a 3 cm ground down?

BTW, I am going to use the same marble in the master bath for the vanity and shower curb. Same issue there.

I'd go for 3cm if possible... We just got it for our master bath vanity and it looks great! 2cm just looks like cost was an issue and there was a compromise...

Pretty sure that you can't ground down 3cm to 2cm, unless they do it from the backside. Even then, you'll pay a hefty premium for it.

You won't notice the difference of 1cm (3/8") when the ledge is trimmed out etc...

threeapples- I was trying to match existing granite in my kitchen, but the only match was 2cm, which was thinner than the existing countertops. When I told my fabricator that I was concerned about the seam in the middle from a built-up edge, he said: "No problem, we'll cut all the pieces at a 45 degree angle and the seams will be along the edges where you can't see them." Take a look at these photos and see what you think: He even showed me samples where he had done this with highly figured marble, and he just matched the cut pieces at the seam line so it looked like the pattern wrapped over the edge and down the sides as if it were a solid 4cm slab. If you can find a fabricator who has the skill to do this properly, it's amazing, and they can give you whatever perceived thickness you want without obvious seams.

The counter you're showing in your second picture has a mitered edge I think. (Basically they cut the counter and the edge piece at a 45 degree angle and glue them together). I'm pretty sure it's too late to do that to your counter (it's a pretty complicated thing I think and not all fabricators do it anyway.) it is also a significant up charge so I would never assume that's how it would be done unless discussed specifically in advance. I am no counter expert, but you may still have the option of adding a piece around the perimeter (depending on the overhang) to thicken it up. You will get a line through the middle though. It shouldn't be as noticeable on quartz as it is on some natural stones but it will still be there. What I don't know is if that's something that can be done after it is installed. Another option might be to pull back the trim piece a little so it's not so noticeable. Really you just need to do as suggested above and meet with the builder to find out what can be done. You may be SOL unless you're willing to spring for new counter (and if that's the case maybe you can just get the thicker edge on the island to save money). By the way, 2cm counters are not at all uncommon and many people (especially in Europe and Australia) actually prefer them. That doesn't matter if you don't like them, but I don't think anyone would walk into your home and think it looks bad.

I only wanted Verde Fuoco, and the 3cm slabs were too pink. We have an eased laminated edge. There really isn't a reason for concern: If you want no laminated edge you can have it; if you want a thicker look you can have it. Lily's kitchen is brilliant and she hated the look initially, but realizes that there is no reason to sweat it. BTW I'm a west coaster and found plenty of 3 and 2 cm slabs. Maybe on the east coast there isn't any 2cm rock, but I didn't find it typical at all that there was only 2cm. In fact I found a lot of 3 cm rock (Portland and Seattle). My rock is a little hard to find, so the slab I wanted happened to be in 2cm. no problem (but you need a plywood underlayment).

Hi Sarah in SF. I have a daughter named Sarah who lives in SF. My favorite name and my favorite city. :) In the Bay Area most slabs seem to be 2 cm with 5/8" plywood base. That's what I have in my kitchen. I have Caesarstone with a built-up eased edge. I just had my guest bath remodeled. I went with carrara on my vanity. The vanity has a built-in flush top, so I didn't need the plywood. So I didn't need a built-up edge to obscure the plywood.

To make a 2cm counter look a lot thinner, I edged it with a bevel underneath to get to a 1 cm bullnose in front.

I was going to have the simplest square edge because it is a modern kitchen. I hadn't considered a bevel edge but I am going to now. Thanks for the ideas.

THey said the premium for grinding to 2 cm would be $150 for the vanity and $150 for the raised ledge. Same add-on cost to hone it. So that would be an additional $300 for the ledge to be honed and planed and $300 for the vanity to be honed and planed and $100 for the shower curbs and soap shelf to be honed and planed. That makes a total of $700 extra for all the carrara to be honed and planed. Lots of $ isn't it?!

The OP says "white carrara marble ledge .... overlooks the living/dining room..... the fabricator and its distributors ...."

First things first.
First, the stone.
Then, the thickness.
Then, the edging.
Then, the price.
What I cannot figure out is how a stone can depend on a fabricator and its distributor.
It makes it sound like there is only one source.
Get the stone from another source.
Keep looking.

My honed Carrara is 4cm. I love the thickness. Thick has been kinda "in" in the U.S. In Europe, thin is in. Thin, thin. I'd do 3cm, but that's just MHO.

There isn't ANY 3cm honed anywhere in your area? Anywhere close by you can drive an hour to to find some? Carrara is widely available near where I live in 2cm and 3cm in both polished and honed. Some slabs are very gray and some are much whiter. I'd want to pick.
