Is a mitered edge countertop an upgrade?
Comments (8)In my mind, a mitered edge is just that -- a miter rather than a butt joint. What you have now is just a rectangular piece of marble stuck to the bottom of your contertop. With the miter, they will cut back the edge of your counter at about 45 degrees. Then the piece that creates the built-up edge will also be cut to match that 45 degrees, and be attached. The seam will be the edge of the countertop itself -- not a visible seam along the middle of the edge piece. Now, color match is still an issue, but a mismatch won't be as obvious. If they used a piece from the same lot as the previous piece, you would see the darker top of your counter, and the white on the side -- still a mismatch, but not as obvious that it is two different pieces. I think it would probably look as though, when "sliced" the marble was dark on the outside and white on the inside. They still need to look for a better match....See MoreKitchen Remodel in Progress - Need Countertop Advice
Comments (6)teapotmissy - Your kitchen is already beautiful. Are your floors going to be wood or something else? I love the look of wood in a kitchen, especially a white kitchen, it really warms up the look. I can see why you want to have the marble on the perimeter - it would really work well and compliment the back splash you have chosen. And a wood topped white island would be striking. That said the reverse would be lovely too - there is not much nicer than a huge expanse of marble in my book. The wood perimeter would "ground" the white cabinets, but might not be as complimentary to the backsplash. But you can put a sample to it and judge - the colors look like the could look nice with wood - just not give you that light feeling the marble and iridescent glass would. I don't think there is a mistake to made in the two options you have, just what is your preference. If you are putting in a wood floor, I think that will add warmth as well. Comments (14)You can have laminate countertops made in any thickness you like -- provided you don't go so thin as co compromise the structure. In the 60s 1" thick laminate counterops was the rage for a while. We still replace a lot of it. The 1-1/2" standard laminate thickness serves no particular purpose. It just happens to be what you get when you glue two 3/4" board together. We commonly have tops made 1-1/4" thick to match Formica's ideal edge thickness. Other edge fabricators will go as thin a 1-1/8" which is about 2 cm. This helps the illusion that the laminate is stone since stone tops are typically 2 cm....See MoreWhere did you put your counter top seam?
Comments (27)"The rounded edge on the inside of my sink and the two outside side edges cost a total of $150 more." This is why I keep preaching that fabricators should sell this option instead of that gawdawful ugly cheap "pencil" edge at sinks. One chip, and that's "when", not "if", and you've paid me nearly $300.00 to fix it on site. Pulling the faucet and sink, profiling and polishing a proper round over, and reinstalling the sink and faucet to reduce the risk of future chips could be $500.00 or more....See Morecookncarpenter
