Problem with onyx backsplash and grout.
Comments (9)Green Design's answer is spot on - I'm surprised though, that the folks that did their research did not find any "translucent grouts" that have hit the market over the last couple of years... I used to do tile, but have since focused primarily on slab applications - hence my not looking at this thread until now - I would have chimed in earlier... Sorry for the late response I know that this may not help the folks LRy511, but for everyone else that has not grouted their onyx or glass tiles yet - you CAN get some of the "glow" if you use a translucent joint filler/grout..... Take a look at Starquartz - they are made by Bostik/Upco - who makes Hydroment - which is what I used to use exclusively when I did do tile all the time... Hopefully my brother Bill Vincent will chime in on this thread too - he is TOTALLY dialed in on to what's happening in the Tile Industry these days - WAY MORE than me..... and maybe Bill can offer some great insight on this topic too hth kevin Here is a link that might be useful: Starquartz Website...See MoreOnyx Backsplash?
Comments (8)Well it's not a backsplash but I always think of Pharoah's awesome kitchen when someone mentions onyx. The island has an onyx panel that just about glows with the backlighting. Two that I found by Googling - a solid piece and tiles: And here's a blog entry about onyx from a designer. I think it's funny that he says the red one looks like "a meat backsplash." http://www.kitchenandresidentialdesign.com/2008/10/onyx-is-not-what-you-think.html Here is a link that might be useful: Pharoah's kitchen in the FKB...See MoreAnyone have a 'honey/ caramel onyx glass stone blend' backsplash?
Comments (5)We have a rough textured honey onyx in our master bath BS, which I love, but not sure I would want it in a kitchen because I think it would be very difficult to clean splatters off the rough, uneven texture. Not sure if the one from HD is rough or not, but if you like the look, try to get something that is smooth and more even....See MoreAnybody use onyx for a backsplash?
Comments (19)Ha - who needs to go to the granite yard when one has a kitchen full of samples! So, we looked over what appealed to us throughout the process, and found a sample of the granite we INTENDED to choose UNTIL we saw the slab of Giallo Portofino. Yes, we made an emotional decision - never a good thing for us. It is a great choice for our natural red birch cabinets and actually ties in our kitchen floor tile (which we are not replacing) better than the GP. It's better for the cooler tone of our other colors and less busy. And it gives us more color and design flexibility for the backsplash. The granite yard will let us apply our deposits to it so we will go take care of that tomorrow. All those weeks trying to fit a square peg into a round hole - now I know why - the GP has a lot of goldy beige - and I hate gold. Oh well, here it is: Sapphire Blue aka Sapphire Brown aka English Brown. Sadly that gorgeous onyx will not go with it. Still a little unquiet and dark but it fits us and our home. Thanks again, everybody, for the guidance. You guys always come through!! Happy new year to all....See Moregizmonike
