Extended height base cabinets - do any of you have one?

Instead of a tall oven cabinet that is 93" tall and 24" deep from top to bottom, I am wondering if it would be more elegant to use a base cabinet that is about 54" tall with the Advantium installed at counterlevel and drawers below, and then hang a wall cabinet above it that sits on the countertop. It would leave about 9" of countertop in front of the cabinet for a little landing pad. Do any of you have this kind of cabinet? If so, would you please be so kind as to post a picture?

I sure don't, but the way I see it in my mind it would be very functional.
I'm not really all that fond of some of those monstrous oven cabinets. Just like the giant, paneled fridges. They seem like modified coffins.

I'm having some trouble visualizing this, probably because I am fried from work. But I'm in the same boat, trying to fit in a built in Advantium. When I read the install specs, I think it was 33 or so inches it had to be above the floor. So in this scenario the counter/landing zone would be above the oven, yes?

Very intriguing. Wonder if I'm tall enough to consider that as well...would need to reach over the door when opened to use the counter above for landing.

dekeoboe I'm sorry, but I'm not sure where I found that particular picture any more. It was saved in my "storage" bookmarks but we decided not to use it b/c we decided to keep our dishes in upper cabs. It is possible that it was a UK only product b/c I know I found a bunch of things they have there that we don't that I am having shipped to cousins in Scotland and then sent over here. After seeing your latest pics, ans re-reading your OP - I would say the following: 1. You PURCHASED the piece of stone for the Island - it was your property 2. THEY suggested that you wait on the island 2 1/2 years ago, and on THEIR insistance - took responsibility for the piece (still YOUR property) 3. What they are trying to give you as the island made from "your piece" (if the small sample in the pics is what the stone SHOULD look like...) does NOT match with the sample. Based on these three criteria - I would say you have a case, and that your Fabricator now has the responsibility to "deliver" - if he can't to your satisfaction, you'll need to work out fair compensation for loss and de-fault of contract. Hopefully it won't go there - I'm hoping that your guy will make things right and give you what you feel is acceptable... TO YOU !!!! I would hope that your Fabricator can find a stone with waaay more of a match to the sample, and then everyone wins. My guess is - they lost track of your "piece" AND either broke it or fabbed it (the original) for something else, or they just lost track of it and it's still there - burried in their scrap pile.... I work with shops all over the world in my business, and I cant tell you how many other fabricators are in this general group....... EVERYBODY makes mistakes now and then !!! LOL - But..... you gotta hols your guy's feet to the fire and have him fab up an island that YOU will be happy with. I built roll-out trays for the kitchen in my Mom's apartment - it has those stupid half shelves in base cabinets. The function of those cabinets went up dramatically. Not as good as drawers, but the best I could do with existing cabinets. In my new kitchen, I ordered extra shelves for all the upper cabinets. Like Talley_Sue, I hate wasted space. Having extra shelves allowed me to put like-height things on a shelf, and put the next shelf just above it. I get more square footage of storage space per cabinet, and I can store things without stacking. Cabinets - either base, drawers, or uppers - less than about 15" are pretty useless, unless you put cookie sheets in a base cab. Making upper cabinets an inch or two deeper increases storage space a lot - and ensures that big plates actually fit.

We are exploring another option- seeing as there are some challenges to making a pantry in the kitchen itself happen, we are crossing our fingers that we can "borrow space" from the laundry closet area, which is opposite of the kitchen (near the opening of the "U"). The only problem is that there is a hot water heater that needs access so we will see if our contractor can come up with a clever idea how to manage that. There is a good 3 feet of space next to the washer and dryer between it and the hot water heater where we could have either a pantry closet made of walls and shelves or a pantry cabinet inserted into the space. We would have to re-wall in the present door opening and get smaller doors to fit another pantry door next to it, but I think it can be done if we can figure out how to not hide the hot water heater or at least have access to it if repairs or replacement is needed. If that is impossible we are back at square one and fitting a pantry into the kitchen proper- hopefully I will get measurements soon so I don't have to guess dimensions based on tile size, etc :-)

Here is an example of what I am talking about except the upper cabinet would actually rest on the countertop. The upper cabinet would be a vertical - maybe with glass doors.

It would give the cabinets some dimension rather than having a big and tall appliance box in the corner.

I modified a regular MW base cab to elevate the Advantium to a reasonable height, 42"

That's exactly what I am talking about except there would be an upper cabinet that rests upon the lower cabinet, which would create a 12" ledge toward the front of the lower cabinet that could act as a landing pad for the Advantium. Conversely, one could raise the base cabinet and use a shorter upper and have some space between them.

My goal is to get the Advantium at torso level so I don't have to stretch or stoop to get into it. An appliance cabinet would work but they are so behemoth!

Ooooh, that makes sense. I think it would look very nice. Just make sure the model you want can do that, I know I want the 240V, which needs I think 33-34 inches above floor, so I can't do that unless I grow a few inches!

It would definitely add some interest and break up the huge block of cabinets look.

I have seen a number of kitchens designed/built in the 1950s that did exactly this, essentially a waist high oven with a ledge on the top and a wall depth cabinet over.

That's funny palimpsest because I have had MCM style on my mind for this reno - I think I am channeling the fifties. The only drawback I see is trying to reach the upper cabinet but I don't think it would be more difficult that reaching the top of a tall cabinet and since I am getting 39" tall cabinets, I will have to use a stepstool to get to the top shelf anyway.

I can't remember where, but I saw a picture of this recently and LOVED the way it looked. Exactly as you described and it looked phenomenal. One thing, the uppers were french door style. If I find it again, I'll post it.

Thanks, suzy. That is a very elegant solution to the oven microwave pairing. I especially like the fact that it's in a corner. I think it would be fun to have a corner oven. Unfortunately, I don't have a usable corner so mine will have to flank a wall...a prospect that doesn't thrill me but I think I am just going to have to live with it.
