It is hard to answer without seeing the actual setup, but I think if you stopped short of the top in a straight line with a single color/type of tile, it would look awkward. Guessing from the glass hood, you probably have a contemporary look going on. If this is the case, a graphic approach to the tile I think will work (like wide stripes in alternating colors, or large squares inset into the wall as they fade out toward the top, or a line drawn in an arc echoing the shape of the bottom of the hood). That is all I can think of. Maybe someone else has some ideas? Good luck!

Your cabinets flanking the range don't go up to the ceiling? Can you post a pic of the layout?

The chimney goes up to the ceiling but the cabinets don't. There are several things you can do. You can tile all the way to the ceiling and do a decorative edge at the sides of the tile to finish it. That way the edge continues up. You can shape the tile so that it makes a triangle (without the peak) or arch above the hood, that narrows at the top behind where the chimney goes through the ceiling. This would probably be more attractive, but takes better tiling skills to pull off well. You could tile above the cabinets as well as the whole wall behind the stove. That might look excellent! Or you could go full on artsy and end the tiling below the top of the cabinets with an irregular edge (shaped like waves, flames, or whatever). Or go something like 15" above the top of the hood, following the shape of the top of the canopy.

You can do all kinds of different things, but I wouldn't stop the tiling in a straight line at the top of the cabinets. That would look like someone goofed on the measurements. Just about anything else will look intentional, and can be made to work.

I think that tiling the entire wall would look the best - failing that - run the tiles all the way up the wall on either side of the hood/duct between the hood and the cabinets. Stop it at the top of the cabinets and think about running a valance or faux ceiling there.

thanks for the good ideas. I will try to get a pic of the layout, if I can figure it out. I'm sure I'll have some matching trim pieces left over that I may be able to work with here.

I also think part of my problem is that this kitchen doesn't really feel very contemporary - I would say more transitional, if I had to put a tag on it. So now I'm wondering if the glass hood would be out of place. I thought it would be nice to lighten up the area, but now I don't know.
